I think this is worth a viewing. As usual, an excellent performance from Ian McKellan but the young boy whose name I don't recall, was superb.
A touching story of Holmes' decline, from sharp and incisive intellect to elderly and struggling to remember. Acceptably sentimental with beautiful settings.

I am looking forward to seeing this film.

We really enjoyed this film and as mcem says, the boy was excellent! A lot of the reviewers have been quite rude about Frances de la Tour's performance which I think is quite unjustified. Laura Linney was a bit of an eye-opener. Impressive performances and a very sympathetic representation of ageing.

DH and I are planning to see it on Friday.
Is it just about Holmes or is it about a case he solves ??

It's about both.

We went to see it last weekend and I enjoyed it very much. I think it may have been a bit too gentle for my fiancé who was expecting a lot more sleuthing!

It was a simple story, much of it told in flashback so we see some of the middle aged, more energetic Holmes. Ian McKellan's portrayal of old age and memory loss was very touching. It was a period piece, beautifully filmed with shots of the countryside, a devastated post-war Japan, and the London of Holmes's earlier life. The supporting cast were very good, especially the little boy Holmes befriends.

Definitely worth seeing in my opinion.

Really looking forward to seeing this. Hopefully, it'll reach our small local cinema within the next couple of weeks.

Sounds really good. Will most likely wait to see it on TV. I read a review that said it would be perfect for the 9pm Sunday slot.
