The Mekong River with Sue Perkins

I enjoyed the series very much. I didn't think Sue Perkins was overly patronising and thought her honest.

I haven't really watched the series although I've always liked Sue Perkins. Didn't really take to it when I watched the first episode but did hear her say in an interview that she caught a bug at the start of the journey and wasn't very well for most of the filming. If I could get my iplayer to work I'd give it another go.

I loved it! I always like Sue Perkins anyway, but thought she had things right in the same way that Michael Palin has things right, talking to complete strangers in other countries.Warm, friendly, interested and fun.

The woman with the 'bull shitting' husband certainly was free with the 'moonshine' wasn,'t she. . They all looked piddled. It was so interesting to see her way of life.

They do seem to be humorous people and I think they enjoyed interacting with her in return.

Well done Sue and the BBC for producing a light hearted but really interesting series.

I enjoyed the programme, and will catch up with the earlier ones later. I thought SP handled the huge subject pretty well and gave me much to think about, as did the following programme about a Billingsgate fish-market trader who visited an enormous vegetable market in Delhi. Both programmes reinforced the fact that we don't really know how the other half lives.

I find SP a bit too flippant but the Mekong is such a beautiful river. If I go to heaven I will be sitting on a boat gliding up and down eternally. I've been on it three times and would love to do the bit she was on last night.

We saw it for the first time last night - I thought she presented it very well. She has a very pleasant tone of voice . I didn't think she was patronising, but haven't seen the earlier programmes.

I absolutely loved this series. I don't agree that SP was patronising at all. Infact compared with the usual suspects regularly rolled out to do these travel documentories I think she came across very warm, friendly and sympathetic towards the people she met along the way. She seemed very genuine in her concern too and wasn't prepared to just accept much of the propaganda she was being fed. She seemed to get on extremley well with everyone she met. I especially loved last night when she asked a lady "what her husband did while she (the lady) was cooking, cleaning, working, childminding etc". The answer came back (via an interpreter) "he just talks bullshit"

I would love to see her do a lot more similar programs.

I gave up, despite enjoying much of the series, because of SP's patronising and flippant tone.

She may not have meant to be patronising and I hope she'll see the error of her ways

Have really enjoyed the series. A couple of times she's made an 'aside', but I don't think she's meant it to be patronising. So much different to the Caroline Quentin travel programme last year (?) which I had to give up watching as I found it uncomfortable when the camera panned in on her tears..... .

She camps it up a bit sometimes. Last week, she reminded me so much of my gay nephew.

I really like Sue Perkins and I'm sure she wouldn't mean to offend or patronise anyone.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. Sue Perkins has presented the programmes well and the people she has met are lovely.

Occasionally her asides can seem a little inappropriate.

Clearly I must give it a go - I usually like her. I think she is a very clever lady.

Friend's DS has worked with her quite extensively and says she is supportive, brilliant and great to work with.
I think she makes jokey asides that many people may think but don't say.

I didn't see her patronising anybody. Perhaps one person sees patronising another sees things in a different way.

I feel I want to 'stick up' for her as she had a genuine respect for those she met IMHO. I saw gentle humour certainly not patronising but we will all have our view and I guess we can't all be expected to agree can we.

DH and I really enjoyed it - will be sorry to see it end as there are so few programmes that we both like.

Interestng that you should have picked up on that too petallus - it was the remark "Perhaps we are married" (or similar) that she made as an aside to the camera as she was heading offscreen with what seemed to be a buddhist monk. Seemed a bit offensive to me, but I will give it a go.

DH and i both thought SP was rather patronising and made too many jokey remarks at the expense of the people she met on her journey who hadn't, of course, got a clue she was doing so.

I've always liked SP but this time she seemed a bit up herself.

Apart from that it's well worth watching.

Interesting to hear that this has been good. I avoided it because I found the trailer a bit patronising and thought , "Oh no - not another sleb swanning around some other country." Thanks for the recommendation - I might give it a go - very slowly in iplayer!

I agree POGS. I have only watched the first programme so far, but loved her approach. You have jogged my memory, I must remember to watch the rest. I have the Friday repeats set to record.
