Cancelling BBC 4?

I heard this morning that the BBC is planning to cancel BBC 3 and BBC 4. I shall be very sorry if they get rid of 4. Am I the only one?

Brilliant programme about Art Nouveau on last week [part of a series of three]. Don't know what I'd do without BBC4. If they did cancel it I wonder if Channel 4 would corner the market in cutural programmes? They are a strange channel, full of good stuff and rubbish, but are very forward thinking in a lot of ways [something BBC isn't].

.....channels!

I thought it had been announced a few months ago that 4 would stay and 3 would be for the chop. That's ok by me! I watch 4 a lot especially on saturday evenings when there are only ghastly reality/game/soap shows on the alternative.

Think it was BBC 3 they want to change , but only watch those Top of the Pops 79 at the moment at 730pm on BBC4

Wells said papaoscar!

Yes - the Placido Domingo gala was a gem - it's been on before, and never palls.

Oh yes Nfk - everyone is well served of course! It is a joke here - even trying to listen to the Archers online often results in that blessed little circle going round and round in the middle of the screen while it loads the next minute's broadcast.

I do hope that BBC4 survives. It is the repository of some of the best values of the old BBC, far superior to some of the tawdry trash pumped out of the other channels.

I enjoyed the Placido Domingo gala on BBC4 tonight. It would be a terrible loss.

But surely, Mishap Everybody has 4G (whatever that isn't) and super fast fibre broadband don't they?!! wink

The Proms online here! - we live in a mobile phone and internet black hole - just using this forum is a challenge to the ancient system here.

NfkDumpling Fri 28-Nov-14 19:38:46

Channel Three is continuing as an online channel only. I hope they don't do the same with Channel Four - our TV does't have an Internet connection and I don't fancy watching on a laptop.

The biggest draw for us on BBC4 are the Proms - truly wonderful. We record them and watch them over and over again in the cold months of the winter. I would be very sad indeed if this service stopped.

Theres a concert by Procol Harem with an orchestra tonight on Radio 2 at 8. Gary Brooker is very very much the 'organists organist' and I hadn't realised how good he was [thought of them as a one hit wonder sort of group]. We're going to see War of the Worlds on Tuesday; I've been told that it's amazing smile.

We record lots of things on BBC4 and watch them, sometimes months later, when we are in the mood. I like the fact that they are having loads of Country on at the moment and one of our favourite recordings, to which we keep going back, is the Beachboys at [possibly] Knebworth. It is fantastic.

BBC 3 is the proving ground for lots of comedy that eventually becomes mainstream.

I'd pay more licence fee to keep them both.

durhamjen Fri 28-Nov-14 12:37:22

Two hours of Pink Floyd tonight on BBC4. Haven't decided whether to watch or record.

felice Fri 28-Nov-14 10:48:38

I even pay extra to my cable company for 3 and 4, I am assuming this will not include Cbeebies, which i definately couldn't cope without.

BBC4 lost the scandi crime dramas to Sky, when they saw how popular they were, they nicked them. So BBC4 has been left without its biggest draw. So sad.

Do you not have a menu facility on your TV ?
I can see what's on now and the next programme for each channel on mine.

Ana Thu 27-Nov-14 17:39:20

If you know the name of the programme you want to watch, just put that in your search box (I usually say google it, but am aware that there are other search engines!) and it should tell you what channel it's going to be on, and when.

Elegran Thu 27-Nov-14 17:36:59

The channel schedules are all posted in several places online too.

Ariadne Thu 27-Nov-14 17:30:53

Oh, thanks, jen! To what would we be reduced without it?

soontobe there are several really good channel guide aps, and most are free!

durhamjen Thu 27-Nov-14 17:25:34

They are not getting rid of BBC4 yet. They just cannot guarantee it beyond 2016-17. We'll just have to watch it more to keep it going.

jennycockerspaniel Thu 27-Nov-14 16:50:18

yes I like BBC 4 and bbc3

Lona Thu 27-Nov-14 16:19:57

I won't be able to get to sleep without watching Family Guy! blush

merlotgran Thu 27-Nov-14 16:17:06

Most of the Proms are on BBC4 but some of the concerts are on Two.

whitewave Thu 27-Nov-14 16:13:47

BBC 3 seems to be for the younger viewer and 4 has much more meat than the other channels. Won't be worth having a tv.
