Just seen John Lewis's Christmas ad. I'm not sure about it. What do others think? You can see it on You Tube. X

Deedaa that must be really annoying for you, especially when you want to discuss the play afterwards.I am like you with ads though, even if I like an ad I rarely remember what the product is, because advertising has changed and is now a subtle message [well, usually.] Car ads are the worst, I never realise what kind of car they are showing. The days of Beanz Meanz Heinz and Persil washes whiter are over.

Did anyone see the Sainsburys Christmas ad earlier this evening? Sainsburys always wait until after Armistice Day to release their ad - still way too early in my opinion, but at least they don't join the unseemly scrum the week before.

No doubt the cynics will hate it, but it had me in tears. And the message is a good one.

Was impressed with the Not on the High Street one tonight. [Wonder how long it will be before they ARE on the high street]. By the way, realised that Hawkins Bazaar are open again [which solves all of my stocking filler problems].

Maggemaybe - yes, I saw the Sainsbury's advertisement and yes, I wept. My maternal grandfather was captured in April 1918 and spent the remainder of his war in a German prisoner of war camp. He told me his captors were 'just lads like us". The captors and prisoners shared what little there was, including the red cross parcels, boiled grass and rats. He was a lovely man, and that blinking advert had me right back there, in conversation with him smile

So moving, in tears. X

I saw the advert last night and felt very emotional. But when the message at the end was shown, and I realised it was an advert for Sainsburys I felt quite sickened. In partnership with the British Legion or not I felt it was in very poor taste to use such heartbreaking scenes to advertise a bloody supermarket.

I too think the Sainsbury ad is beautiful and moving, it makes all the others look crass.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 13-Nov-14 09:34:52

I don't think the cynicism lies with us Maggiemaybe.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 13-Nov-14 09:35:37

nightowl I agree.

annsixty Thu 13-Nov-14 09:40:07

No, I didn't like it.

Lona Thu 13-Nov-14 09:45:20

I don't think it did advertise. It wouldn't make me shop at Sainsburys any more than the other ads would make me shop at those supermarkets.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 13-Nov-14 09:47:46

Right. So it's a crap advert, apart from anything else. What were their advertising men thinking of?

Oh come on! It's purpose is to big up Sainsburys.

merlotgran Thu 13-Nov-14 09:53:18

Sainsbury's are jumping on an emotional bandwagon angry

annodomini Thu 13-Nov-14 10:03:58

Yes, it is moving, but to hijack such an occasion for the purpose of drawing our attention to Sainsbury's? That leaves a bad taste, I'm afraid.

Elegran Thu 13-Nov-14 10:19:44

Yes. Bandwaggoning.

rosequartz Thu 13-Nov-14 10:27:53

Why should a penguin make me want to go and shop at John Lewis? If I feel like shopping there I will. In fact I am going there next week (to take something back!).
I sent our penguin back to the Antarctic years ago (he said he was getting too hot in a bin bag in the attic). sad

I haven't seen the Sainsburys one yet.

Greenfinch Thu 13-Nov-14 10:44:00

I totally agree with nightowl. It is a lovely piece of film but to link it to a supermarket advert is in very bad taste indeed. My grandfather was killed in 1917. Why ? So that we can all shop at Sainsbury's rather than
Tesco's? The British Legion don't always get things right and I feel an apology is called for here.

Maggiemaybe Thu 13-Nov-14 11:39:04

Ah well, I still like it. The RBL wouldn't have worked on it with Sainsburys if they had thought it tasteless and I respect their viewpoint. Profits from the sale of the "WW1" chocolate bars (made in Ypres) will be going to the Poppy Appeal. And apart from these, I for one won't be buying any more than I usually do from Sainsburys when I add a few of those to my online shop.

Pittcity Thu 13-Nov-14 12:13:58

I'm off out to buy a frozen lobster from Peter Andre grin

Ana Thu 13-Nov-14 12:15:04

grin Pitticity!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 13-Nov-14 13:23:33

Oh, that Chocolate Mountain Pavlova from Iceland!!!

That's what I call an advert. grin

merlotgran Thu 13-Nov-14 13:44:49

I haven't been to Iceland for donkey's years. Is it any good??

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 13-Nov-14 13:49:48

Dunno. But the ad makes it look good! I might pay a visit. grin

(Although they used to call it Fatland over at the Other Place)

merlotgran Thu 13-Nov-14 14:00:40

I remember taking Mum to Iceland a few years ago because she wanted to try their fish pie. I remarked that everything seemed to be priced at £1.

'Yes dear,' she said - VERY LOUDLY. 'That's because the people who shop in here need to add up on their fingers' shock blush

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 13-Nov-14 14:17:53

Well, they have got Peter Andre for their advert. Nuff said!
