Just seen John Lewis's Christmas ad. I'm not sure about it. What do others think? You can see it on You Tube. X

JL have the stuffed toy for £95 for anyone interested.

feetlebaum Thu 06-Nov-14 15:55:24

It cost a million to make, and the whole campaign - all those TV slots - cost seven million.

I love the "fish finger drop" too jings . Infact the whole advert makes me feel all warm inside.

I agree ginny that we can't always talk about serious matters. I'm miserable enough most of the time. Nice to have something to make me smile

Lovely. I like christmas cheer.
Helps most of us get through the winter better imo.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 06-Nov-14 17:27:02

I sent a large stuffed toy penguin to Oxfam. Recently my grown-up kids have been asking after its whereabouts. shock

I have stalled them so far.

Nonu Thu 06-Nov-14 17:46:41

The advert is just quite adorable !!!
lots of smiles

gillybob Thu 06-Nov-14 17:53:45

Oh dear they are gonna be on to you pretty soon jings especially once they see that advert ! Good luck explaining. smile

Tegan Thu 06-Nov-14 17:58:23

My son collected toy penguins. They still all live with me. The advert made me well up. I wasn't keen on the music, although it did go wih the add I guess [I thought it sounded like Coldplay, which put me off].

kittylester Thu 06-Nov-14 18:07:53

jings which charity shop? I'll be there first thing tomorrow!

The singer is Tom Odell!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 06-Nov-14 18:10:49

Oh shite flip me Tegan! Now you've made me feel really bad! bad mother alert!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 06-Nov-14 18:12:18

There is a child somewhere...... No. That won't work. Want our penguin back! sad

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 06-Nov-14 18:14:35

if I knew that kittyl I'd be there first thing in the morning! Had a huge clear out in the summer though, and several charity shops were visited.

merlotgran Thu 06-Nov-14 18:16:54

Every charity shop in the country will be filling their windows with donated penguins.

If they've got any sense grin

Just seen the JL Christmas advert and think it pathetic. Trying to get us to spend by appealing to the emotions is a cynical use of passive aggressive manipulation. But then, that's advertising, nothing to do with Christmas of course.

Nonu Thu 06-Nov-14 18:48:00

OOer SUE !!

Agus Thu 06-Nov-14 19:06:43

I actually forget whichever store it is, the fact it is an advert and in this case I thought the story was lovely.

I'm not that gullible to shop at a store because of their adverts

rosesarered Thu 06-Nov-14 19:15:01

I usually like the JL Christmas adverts, also the M&S ones. I have to confess I have not seen the JL one yet, but it sounds nice anyway.I rather like penguins.Even the chocolate biscuit kind.

rosesarered Thu 06-Nov-14 19:16:24

Why would anyone castigate a business that spent a lot of money on ads? It's not our money after all, it's theirs.

Deedaa Thu 06-Nov-14 20:14:15

I love it although I don't actually need an advert to get me to do Christmas shopping at JL. I prefer it to last year's which I never really took to.

This year's Waitrose ad gets my vote though because it's got a Border Collie smile

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 06-Nov-14 20:21:59

I put a link up roses. here it is again if you want to see it smile

Maggiemaybe Thu 06-Nov-14 23:18:39

Good grief, surely noone with half a brain is "manipulated" into buying at a certain store because of the aah factor of their Christmas ad? Can we not just enjoy this for what it is - a tear-jerking bit of feel good to warm our cold cockles over the festive season?

I happen to like John Lewis, and would certainly shop there - passive aggressive manipulation or not - if it wasn't for the fact that my nearest store is 30 miles away. sad

I'm now off to google a sewing pattern for a large cuddly penguin. It could be the making of me. I think I'll market them at £95 per canoodling couple. grin

janeainsworth Fri 07-Nov-14 02:41:10

Of course it's our money Rosesarered
If they didn't spend £8million on an advertising campaign, they could lower their prices.

I would be very interested in the maths - how much extra turnover and profit they think this campaign will generate, and also how much they think they would lose by not running it.

I rarely watch television, haven't seen the advert and don't think it would influence my decision whether to shop at JL or not.

thatbags Fri 07-Nov-14 07:08:03

I have two stuffed penguins. Hmmm... wonder if I should sell them on ebay....? What do you reckon a good starting price would be (they are v g quality, bought them at the Cotswold Wildlife Park... counts on fingers... over a decade ago?

Nelliemoser Fri 07-Nov-14 07:45:01

Cynical manipulation, sentimental tosh and Bah Humbug.

Penguins are charming I will agree but yes, they are no doubt putting the cost onto the goods they sell. So customers are paying for it.

It's probably my mood at present and Christmas in general that has got to me. A grumpy old curmudgeon me!

soontobe Fri 07-Nov-14 07:58:50

I would probably in right in thinking that some stores lose money by advertising. And some gain.

My guess is that this advert is a winner to them, moneywise.
