Recently I discovered the Drama Channel which repeats lots of my old favourite shows. I have set up my recorder to video To the Manor Born. It is such a pleasure to watch good acting and gentle humour.

I think I would have taken well to the life reflected in this comedy, as long as I had the spondoolicks (money) to go with it grin.

What comedies of yesteryear did you enjoy ?

Teetime Mon 13-Oct-14 09:10:05

Yes I'm enjoying this again and have watched many such gentle comedies on here including

Brush Strokes
Ever Decreasing Circles
Likely Lads
The Good Life
Yes Minister

Liver Birds and Bread are on as well but not my cup of tea.

DH would watch Dad's Army forever if I let him.

We often watch it on Saturday nights to escape the rubbish that's on other channels and it always makes us laugh despite knowing all the storylines back to front.

Looking at Teetime's list made me realise that The Good Life is the only one I've seen. I wonder why I missed all the others?

As Time Goes By is another favourite and am currrently enjoying Lovejoy on Drama (I think it is)

I also missed a few but I did enjoy Yes Minister and the Good Life. I did enjoy To the Manor Born but not so much the last series.

I rarely watch any of today's comedies as I do not find them remotely funny and I hate canned laughter.

I used to love To The Manor Born and always felt that Penelope Keith (and the chap who played her long-suffering husband) were the real stars; I always found Felicity Kendall and Richard Briars a bit annoying.

I used to love watching Bread but watching that again not long ago, I wondered why I had found it funny at one time; same happened with Ever Decreasing Circles. Now I don't make trips down memory lane anymore, just in case a few more treasured memories become obliterated!

I bought The Beiderbecke trilogy ages ago to re watch but haven't got round to watching it yet. Such lovely, gentle humour. I think I could still watch Butterflies. I don't often watch Dad's Army on Saturday but, when I do I'm amazed at how funny/clever it is. That's why I like The Detectorists at the moment; a lovely mixture of funny and poignant with impeccable timing.

Nostalgia is flourishing on YouTube, I'm glad to say. Relived the Two Ronnies Fork Handles sketch the other night and the Lumberjack song from Monty Python. Then Dick 'You are awful!' Emery and Harry Worth turned up, followed by Bob Hope, Ted Ray,and Kenneth 'Round the' Horne and the gang. The Goons wanted to join in but there wasn't time and Mrs Bucket was quite put out as were Del boy and General 'Bah!' Melchett. I'll have to wander down Memory Lane again soon!

Don't you mean The Good Life Hollydaze?
Why I particularly like To The Manor Born, apart from Penelope Keith as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton who is a wonderful character, is that DD and SIL have a weekend /holiday place in the grounds of Cricket St Thomas, the house where it was filmed. I love to imagine them and the little DGC just up the hill- daft I know smile

Yes I did Soutra - I stand corrected (head racing on the topic) but I loved To The Manor Born because of Penelope Keith smile

Ever Decreasing Circles is a standout series - fine writing and what a magnificent cast!

HollyDaze - erm - a swift change of gear there - you didn't say that you were now talking of The Good Life! Felicxity Kendall's Barbara was a delight, but Richard Briars didn't really like Tom Good... he was a bit of a selfish blighter! The 'chap' was the late Paul Eddington, by the way.

Did you know that Angela Thorne who played Marjorie Frobisher (Mrs. Forbes-Hamilton's friend) has two sons one of which is Rupert Penry-Jones who played a leading role in Whitechapel. If you look him up on Wiki you will know who I mean. I think he is quite handsome.

Crikey - he is NanKate, oh to be 20 (okay, 30) years younger grin

NanKate Mon 13-Oct-14 22:23:00

I saw him first Holly so hands off. Perhaps his brother would suit you. hmm

All right then NanKate - if I have to (said in my best hard-done-by voice that masks that I actually feel quite pleased about it) smile

She and her husbad certainly produced two very handsome young men.
