Wow! Dishy vicar, whodunnit, and a gorgeous Labrador puppy. I'm already hooked!

Jane10 Wed 05-Nov-14 09:52:28

I enjoyed the books and agree that they seem to have "sexed it up a bit" although the attraction and odd relationship with Amanda was always there. I think its the actor himself I don't like. The supporting cast are fine but he`s just not right somehow. Disappointing.
Re Father Ted its a bit disconcerting to find Mrs Doyle in Eastenders confused

merlotgran Wed 05-Nov-14 09:09:52

I found the last episode boring. Without the housekeeper and the gay curate it would have no spark at all. Father Ted Brown was so much better.

Lona Wed 05-Nov-14 07:40:30

I'm disappointed, but I have to agree that it is very unrealistic in many ways.
Have they tried to sex it up a bit or was it written like this originally?
I still like him though wink

I have been trying to like this for long enough now and gave up on Monday after 10minutes. The relationship between the two men is just not right and the agonised looks between the vicar and his ex are wearing in the extreme.I was so looking forward to another Father Brown, which in my opinion was wasted as daytime TV and deserved a prime time slot.

Amen to that! grin

Ana Sat 25-Oct-14 17:24:30

Father Ted was even better! grin

I also think it's tedious and unbelievable. The vicar is very un-attractive with Mick Jagger lips. The housekeeper is a joke.
Father Brown was a much better programme.

Dishy vicar..but I'm struggling to hear everyone..is it just me?

trendygran Thu 23-Oct-14 17:02:11

Really enjoying this series and the dishy vicar definitely helps!

Anya Thu 23-Oct-14 11:49:53

Glad to know it's not just me hmm

Oldgreymare Thu 23-Oct-14 11:02:19

Easy-watching (is there such a thing?)
R.T. says he was recording both programmes at the same time, he gets my vote just for being able to do that!

Ana Thu 23-Oct-14 10:50:48

Not my type at all, either!

merlotgran Thu 23-Oct-14 10:30:16

Neither do I Anya. He looks like a slobbery kisser to me. grin

FlicketyB Thu 23-Oct-14 09:47:31

Anya I am with you, but most men labelled as heart throbs leave me cold - and always have done.

Anya Thu 23-Oct-14 07:19:56

Strange thing - I don't find him in the least attractive or good looking.

GrannyTwice Wed 22-Oct-14 20:51:19

Oh but he is really lovely ......

FlicketyB Wed 22-Oct-14 20:42:35

I found it rather dull and formulaic. Anything 1950s is now treated like costume drama. Being old enough to remember the 1950s, 1950s this aint.

Culag Wed 22-Oct-14 10:26:36

It's so much better than the book! I didn't think the characters came alive in the book at all. Sidney is a dish but I did notice his dark hair line under the blonde. No vicar would have dyed his hair in those days.

Grannyknot Wed 22-Oct-14 09:48:09

Mrs Maguire is a real old "battle axe" albeit with a heart of gold (deeply buried). She's Raquel (or however you would spell it) from Fools and Horses. You never see her these days and yet there are so many other actors of that generation that keep getting trotted out. I wonder why - she's a good actress.

I love it. It's so gentle. I agree the plot is almost superfluous smile

Jane10 Wed 22-Oct-14 09:40:59

Thanks for pointing out that the vicar was the baddie in "Happy Valley". I knew there was a reason I didn't like him! What a terrible person he was then. I can`t forgive him for beating up Sarah Lancashire as well as the other appalling stuff he did. He was at some risk taking on a character like that and needed a radical change but I still cant quite see him as a vicar! Its pleasant enough viewing though. I`ve read all the books but somehow seeing the stories performed is quite different.

Lona Mon 20-Oct-14 22:20:43

The plots are immaterial to me, I just gaze in wonder wink but I do wish they'd lay off the alcohol a bit!

Anya Mon 20-Oct-14 22:16:22

Yes, it's getting better isn't it?

merlotgran Mon 20-Oct-14 22:02:07

The characters are really taking shape now. Mrs. Maguire is a dead ringer for Mrs. Doyle from Father Ted (apart from the accent) and the gay curate is a joy.

Loving it!

I haven't read the books but I quite enjoyed the programme. I thought it was a cross between Father Brown and Father Dowling. I will watch again and see how the characters develop.

rubysong Tue 07-Oct-14 23:47:02

I enjoyed it and, as I didn't watch Happy Valley, I can think of the vicar only as a 'goodie'. I think the characters will develop as it goes along.
