Is anyone else as excited as I am for the new series tonight? I have heard that they've got the oldest and youngest contestants to date... should be interesting!!

I know a few people [mainly jockeys due to my interest in racing] that have had to stop using Twitter because of nasty comments but cowardly people that wouldn't have the nerve to say such things to someones face.

I don't usually see GBBO but I thought the Extra Slice programme was very funny.
I didn't like the two men on the panel though so I hope they have someone different next week. Thought the comedienne was just right though.

I really enjoyed the Extra Slice programme. I heard that there were people on Twitter calling the girl who left "fat". You have to wonder what sort of perfect specimen of humanity they are! I'm picturing somebody morbidly obese, surrounded by crisps and chocolates, pouring out vitriol on Twitter about someone who's actually doing something. I hope she's got the sense to see how meaningless it all is.

I would love one of those machines for my kitchen I think a pale blue would be nice but am wondering if it can be used for anything other than mixing cake bread etc? Has anyone got one? Not that the purchase of one will be in the near future, have you seen the price of them!!?

shysal Sun 10-Aug-14 19:01:46

kitchen aid mixer
I can't believe the prices! I manage perfectly well with my Asda hand mixer, which cost about £10,

Deedaa Sun 10-Aug-14 21:19:30

I've got a perfectly good Kenwood Chef that my mother bought me about 35 years ago. I've added a liquidiser and various slicing gizmos over the years, but to be honest I haven't used it for ages. I do everything with my little hand mixer or a kitchen knife!

merlotgran Sun 10-Aug-14 21:40:36

The bigger the gadget the more washing up you have to do.

whitewave Mon 11-Aug-14 08:44:32

Yes that is what I suspected - I only use a handmixer and manage fine - so that little dream has been put to bed!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 11-Aug-14 09:11:05

I can't see how the Kitchenaid is any different to the Kenwood Chef, apart from the retro look. It has become "fashionable" simply because of that. hmm

whenim64 Mon 11-Aug-14 10:03:14

I've got a KitchenAid Artisan, whitewave. The almond coloured one. I bought it a few years ago and it's a real workhorse. I make bread with it several times a week, and keep it on the worktop ready to use. I got it because it suits my farmhouse style kitchen and very modern appliances look out of place. The grandchildren like it because they can see what's going on in the glass bowl when we're making cakes and whipping up egg whites. My friend has the Kenwood, which is equally good and seems to be just as sturdy.

whenim64 Mon 11-Aug-14 10:12:45

Crikey! I've just looked at the price! Mine was about £230, so a couple of hundred pounds less than they are now, and I got a free set of kitchen tools valued at about £50 with it. I wonder if GBBO has contributed to the high price?

WBundecided Mon 11-Aug-14 10:27:21

I have got a Kitchenaid and love it! I leave it out on the worktop because it is too heavy to heave in and out of a cupboard. I use it a lot and it doesnt take a lot of washing up, just the bowl and whichever mixer tool I use. It is expensive, but a one off purchase, and very well enigineered.

whenim64 Mon 11-Aug-14 10:34:16

Those Kenwoods are pricey, too. Look at this one, which is on a par with my KitchenAid. £499!

shock

merlotgran Wed 13-Aug-14 21:24:59

Really high standard tonight considering it's only week 2 but I think Jordan should have gone.

Richard, the builder, has got to be one of the favourites to win.

ginny Thu 14-Aug-14 08:39:29

I have agreed with the judges verdicts so far. Also enjoying 'Extra slice'. and agree Claire seems lovely.

Would also like to see a comeback of water colour challenge.

shysal Thu 14-Aug-14 08:47:31

I also think that Jordan should have gone. They seemed to only judge on the show stopper instead of all 3 sessions.

I am another who would love to see the return of Watercolour Challenge.

NfkDumpling Thu 14-Aug-14 08:49:56

I made Mary Berry's Florentines a week or so ago and thought they'd come out wrong because of the frilly edges ..... Now I know I got them right! Dead chuffed!

(DS loves cooking and is a sucker for gadgets, bought himself a Kitchenaid as a treat and has passed his old Kenwood on to me. I think Kitchenaids are wonderful!!)

Crow Thu 14-Aug-14 09:59:05

I love my Kitchenaid and regularly use it, even though there are only two of us at home. I mainly make bread with it although I do make cakes and biscuits but not too often as we eat them!!!!!!
However when family or friends visit it is in constant use.

whitewave Thu 14-Aug-14 11:10:41

I have changed my mind - I am going to save for one.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Aug-14 13:46:33

Yes. It's the ones who can afford fancy machines that this "Bake-off" appeals to. Your over-fed, winme sozzled middle classes.

No danger of the low paid being encouraged into eating cake. Not the ones who can "really" only afford to shop at Aldi.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 14-Aug-14 13:46:59

really

Elegran Thu 14-Aug-14 14:12:32

Really? I used to make lots of cake when my children were young - it was cheaper than buying sweets for a treat, and I knew what went into them. That was before I had saved enough from my part-time job to buy a Kenwood Chef. After that I didn't need to beat the mixture by hand, as my mother had done too when she made cakes when I was young.

They didn't taste any better from the Chef, though. No-one needs a mixer to make cakes.

merlotgran Thu 14-Aug-14 14:17:26

Your post has made me chuckle, jingl. I wish I'd read it before I went shopping then I'd have had a closer look at everyone in Aldi to see if I could spot the wine sozzled, middle class owners of KitchenAids. grin
