Any other sad person watching, now, on BBC 3 the first of the Eurovision Song Contest semi finals????

I think we stand a good chance of getting some points this year, hoo ra.

Agus Sat 10-May-14 23:39:41

We caught the end of this and I thought it was Kenny Everett

merlot grin

Tegan Sat 10-May-14 23:42:10

Think I've finally lost patience with Eurovision. Have taken it on the chin in previous years because we didn't have songs that were good enough anyway, but we had a good song and she performed it incredibly well. I'm fine with the Netherlands and Sweden getting a lot of votes; they were good songs but the one that won was dire sad.

POGS Sat 10-May-14 23:46:34

Agus

Kenny Everett. grin

See it can make you laugh.

merlotgran Sat 10-May-14 23:50:46

I lost patience with Eurovision when we first became the Billy No Mates of Europe but it's still a laugh.

What's the betting next year we try a BIG BALLAD only to find the others have have gone back to Boom Bang a Bang ditties. hmm

Tegan Sat 10-May-14 23:53:48

Why did he have to have a beard? I found it really creepy; to me he looked like Jesus in a frock and I thought that was a bit distateful [even though I'm not religious].

merlotgran Sat 10-May-14 23:56:57

He/she will be able to afford a ladyshave now. grin

POGS Sun 11-May-14 00:01:39

Jesus in a frock. smile

I think the Bicardi is kicking in. smile

gillybob Sun 11-May-14 08:57:25

I am still confused was he/she a man with a pretty face and a gorgeous figure or a woman with a beard? I need to put this to rest? Had weird dreams about him/her last night.

NanKate Sun 11-May-14 09:43:33

I've only seen the photo of the winner, so don't know what the song was like, but I thought the pic revolting.

However POGS I loved all the Kenny Everett sketches and now keep remembering Kenny in drag sitting in a chair crossing his legs in an over the top manner. grin

It's a funny old world.

I thought 'Conchita' was very brave. I suspect he has had quite a hard life.

Austria's song sounded just like a James Bond theme song, it would have been excellent for that.

I thought France should have had more points, was surprised that Iceland (in the pretty coloured suits) didn't do better.

I thought we would end up where we did - nothing against Mollie, but the song was weak in places.

I loved Norway and hoped they would do better - and the Netherlands was lovely, it was done so beautifully.

I thought it was far better this year, which worried me rather. Does it mean my tastes are changing, does it mean I am getting old, (because I wouldn't have dreamt of watching it as a younger adult) or are my ears becoming more attuned to the type of music that has been chosen?

However, what makes it really worth watching is the amazing things they can do with the stage now. So I am tempted to say - take all that away, just leave us with the bare bones, THEN see how we feel about each song.

gillybob Sun 11-May-14 11:16:47

Having just carried out some google research on "Conchita" (to settle my curiosity) I have learned that "she" is the alter ego of one Thomas Neuwirth (25) who is apparently a famous Austrian "Drag Queen" . No "bravery" involved janerowena just someone with a huge ego putting on a show. smile

petallus Sun 11-May-14 12:47:31

I do agree gillybob. I saw Thomas Neuwirth win last night. Talk about milking it. He was so irritatingly girlish.

Soutra Sun 11-May-14 12:55:18

Oooooooooh! Is girlish a negative characteristic? Only to be used pejoratively? I am shocked!!!

sunseeker Sun 11-May-14 13:21:11

Oh was there some sort of singing contest on last night? I think I was doing something interesting like sorting my kitchen cupboards grin

Actually what I was doing most of the time was watching the trees in the field behind me and wondering if they were brought down by the wind would they reach my conservatory!! [scared emoticon]

petallus Sun 11-May-14 13:45:12

Soutra I think it's okay being girlish if you are a girl! [smile)

whenim64 Sun 11-May-14 14:25:14

I liked the song, although I preferred a couple of others. Conchita is a good, strong singer and I applaud her for having the courage of her convictions. Also, a bit of me likes to think her win will really piss Putin off! grin

Galen Sun 11-May-14 14:29:59

My bisexual, pagan son voted for Austria although he thought that Sweden was musically betterhmm
I think it was part political and the gay/lesbian community got together globally!

petallus Sun 11-May-14 15:35:41

Why 'she' when?

I thought he was a drag artist not a transsexual!

Galen one of our relatives married a white witch recently. They had a Pagan wedding which involved jumping over a broomstick.

kittylester Sun 11-May-14 15:50:52

He likes to be called 'she' petallus when he is in character!

petallus Sun 11-May-14 16:06:45

Whatever Conchita wants, Conchita gets then!

How unlike the majority of us 'she's'

POGS Sun 11-May-14 16:09:33

He was very popular with the other contestants and when he was interviewed on Tuesday he came over as a very nice person actually.

gillybob Sun 11-May-14 18:22:35

But the thing is "she" is not a "she" at all. As petallus This is a man who dresses up as a woman for entertainment ! Not a transsexual, a drag queen !

sparkygran Sun 11-May-14 18:42:29

I`m in the money £20 pounds to be exact but it`s the winning that counts. I drew Austria in our draw so thanks Conchita.

Fun night for our family with a great Chinese meal before hand and then what I think was an exciting production ok some of it was c--p but the stage was amazing.

I agree with others Molly was good and it is sad that the UK continues to be "Billy no Mates" in Eurovision she performed brilliantly and the song was top notch so let`s not despair and keep going.

Nonu Mon 12-May-14 11:20:16

Who"s a lucky girl then sparky.

grin

BeeWitch Mon 12-May-14 15:17:12

I just can't watch Eurovision - I find it toe-curlingly embarrassing blush. I gave up on it after seeing Cliff Richard doing his little 'hop-on-me-left-foot-hop-on-me-right-foot' dance, singing 'Congratulations'. It was a long while ago, but I recollect I had to leave the room....
