Classic film endings

The Guardian has been running an item as to what readers think are classic/memorable film endings.

One of mine would be the end of The Taking of Pelham 123 (original version - Walter Mattau, Robert Shaw) when Walter Mattau is just closing the door to the suspect's flat when the suspect sneezes. Walter Mattau re-opens the door - a "gotcha" expression on his face.

Its got to be the ending in 2Carrie" for me when the hand comes through the grave as the children visit the cemetry.shock

The coach hanging off the cliff in The Italian Job - the "original" cliff hanger!

I would have said The Italian Job, too. I love the end of Billy Elliott as he waits in the wings before leaping across the stage - the build up is so powerful and emotional. Fabulous!

Gone with the Wind,
Where Rhett says to Scarlett "Frankly my dear I don"t give a damn"
She thinks it over and says "I will think about it tomorrow , after all tomorrow is another day"

Now, Voyager. "Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon. We have the stars"

Casablanca -" we will always have Paris "

I also love the ending of Billy Elliott. And Gone With the Wind too.

Thelma and Louise is another film with a powerful ending.

So is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

I saw Les Diaboliques when I was a student and never got over the scarey ending shock.
The Sting ending was good too, watched it many times.

I love the ending of to kill a mockingbird, when Jem takes Boo Radley home,

I also love the ending of Butch Cassidy - I slept under Robert Redford for years, as he covered a hole in the ceiling where my brother had put his foot through when mum and dad were on holiday...

Eloethan Fri 18-Apr-14 23:57:21

I'd forgotten about Butch Cassidy - it was a perfect (though poignant) ending.

There is a wonderful old black and white film called Now Voyager starring Bette Davis and Paul Henreid. At the end they are looking out at the night sky and he hands her a lit cigarette... it's SO romantic... And the final line is "Oh Jerry, let's not ask for the moon; we have the stars".
I LOVE this film.... anyone else seen it?

chloe1984 Sat 21-Jun-14 19:04:01

Now Voyager does it for me it has to have the most wonderful ending absolutely charged with emotion I love the way he lights two cigarettes and hands her one.

henetha Sat 21-Jun-14 19:09:28

It's wonderful, isn't it chloe1984. Definitely the most romantic film ever.
About as good as Casablanca really, athough not so well known.

Agus Sat 21-Jun-14 19:16:02

Now voyager
Casablanca
Out of Africa

chloe1984 Sat 21-Jun-14 20:40:05

Have just thought I also really like the ending of ' an officer and a gentleman' not as romantic as Now voyager but wow Richard Gere sweeping me into his arms is beyond romance just sheer lust I think. (He would also need to able to lift really heavy weights!)

How about Doctor Strangelove, with Slim Pickens riding the atomic bomb like a rodeo cowboy, as it falls on Russia?
