Icebound; The Greatest Dog Story Ever Told

Again on my beloved BBC4; this documentray is on tonight at 9 and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to it. It tells the story of the dog teams that helped take vaccine to a remote town in Alaska when there was an outbreak of diptheria. The Iditerod is run every year in honour of this event [I never knew this]. Balto, who led one of the teams became a canine superstar. I don't know when White Fang and The Call of the Wild were written [two of my favourite books from childhood] but it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't inspired by this event.

I'll make it my business to watch this The Call of the Wild is on my book shelf I have read it to all my DGCs over the years.

I was wrong; The Call of the Wild was written in 1903 [perhaps Balto read it wink].

Tegan, you might like the series of detective stories set in Alaska by Dana Stabenow. One of the 'characters' is a husky-wolf cross, named Mutt. The Iditerod is mentioned frequently, but in the latest book, it's reported that the race is in danger because of the lack of snow, due to global warming.

I used to love Due South [memories of the episode where I thought Diefenbaker had died sad]. I'll check those books out anno.

Do you remember Northern Exposure - one of my favourite TV shows - a variety of wacky characters in Alaska? Lovely opening shot of a moose ambling down the main street of a settlement.

I loved Northern Exposure - just the sort of off the wall humour that I like, and is there a more impossible animal than a moose? If a camel is a horse designed by a committee the moose must have been cobbled together by the United Nations.
