We caught this by chance on NYE and it was such a treat, we chortled all the way through. Anyone else see it?

All the ingredients for a party disaster were there, set in a Glasgow suburb at Hogmanay, there was the gay son bringing home his new partner, the home alone teenagers from next door gate crashing, Norwegian neighbours and the husband wants to join in but the prissy pregnant wife is there under sufferance, the drunken auntie dressed to the nines etc. And for a touch of tension, they're awaiting the return that night of the other son Angus, returning from a stint in Iraq.

Great cast too, the main couple were Arabella Weir and the guy who plays Taggart.

We thought it was hilarious. It reminded us of 'Abigail's Party' back in the seventies. Best moment was when the drunken Auntie climbed out of the bathroom window (I won't say what she was doing!) and tried to break her fall by jumping on top of the gazebo.

Wonderful stuff and just about the only decent bit of telly over a dismal Christmas and New Year schedule.

We still have the second part of Mrs. Brown's Boys to watch though so maybe something to look forward to?

Love Mrs Brown's boys and Gavin and Stacey. Thought Abigail's party was great when I watched it years ago.

However, was disappointed with 'Two Doors Down'. Thought it was too derivative and didn't warm to the characters.

Not sure that drunken sexual assault is comical though there were some funny moments.

Auntie must have been as drunk as the Norwegian if she though he could perform in the state he was in grin

Not really my sense of humour but DH was watching it.

I did not really find it amusing , bit boring in fact !

We loved it and squirmed with embarrassment just as we did through Abilgail's Party.

I love Mrs Brown's Boys, too, although I mostly enjoy much more gentle comedy like 'The Cafe'.

I thought it was really funny (and like Abigail's Party, a bit thought provoking)! I also love Mrs Brown's Boys.
kitty, I haven't heard of The Cafe - what channel is it on?

Oh good; it's on iplayer. I'll check it out. A lot of comedies these days seem to be hidden away on BBC3 and I miss them [eg Bad Education].

The cafe was on BBC2, Marelli. I think there have been two series up to now. It is set in a sea front cafe in Weston super Mate and written by Ralf Little and the woman who co-stars with him. Dh and I are always left disappointed when it finshes. I'll post when/if it comes back.

It was on Sky 1 kittylester, and only two series were made, so it doesn't look as though it's going to come back...sad

Was looking forward to Two Doors Down but didn't find it funny.

Marelli Fri 03-Jan-14 15:05:16

Thanks kitty - wonder if The Cafe was only shown south of the border? confused

kittylester Fri 03-Jan-14 16:33:53

You're right Ana, it was on Sky 1. I thought I'd heard there was going to be another series. sad

If it was on Sky Marelli it probably would be on in Scotland too, would it? Not that it helps if you missed it and there's not going to be another one. It was really good. grin

I started to watch Two doors down but DH and I found that it was not amusing at all, switched off. Such a shame very poor script.

Marelli Fri 03-Jan-14 20:11:03

We don't have Sky, kitty....sad Nevermind, it may pop up again somewhere. I'll watch out for it smile.
