What a stupid woman!

Yes, I know it's not very nice to call someone stupid, but listening to Feedback yesterday on Radio 4 I was reduced to ranting at the radio by her comment.

She said something along the lines of "I think there should be a music radio station for the over 60's" (They played her voicemail message, if anyone wants to check the exact wording I'm sure it is available on Listen Again)

WHAT???!!! I'm currently 55, does this mean that I will wake up on the day after my 60th birthday and decide I no longer like the music that I did before? Or that my mind has suddenly shut up shop with regard to listening to anything new?

OK, so lets take this further, when she hits 70, will she suddenly want another station, as obviously she can't possibly listen to things she enjoyed between the age of 60 and 69.

It's not really the music element of this that has made me angry but this persons attitude to her own age. It's people like her that seem to reinforce the attitude that ageing equals stagnation.

Sorry to rant, I look forward to others opinions.

PS Just imagine a conversation between her and Greatnan! grin

Your last comment made me smile phoenix - don't we miss her!

On your general rant point, I totally agree! Age is a number not a barrier, or should be.

The way to look at it though is that she's obviously not as young at heart as you and me or she wouldn't even think like that. grin

annodomini Sat 30-Nov-13 16:22:21

Yes,*phoenix*, fair enough. She's stupid! grin

If the over 60's station were to meet my needs it would need to present classical music (but not opera), choirs, Scottish Country Dance music, Pibroch and Pipebands, early rock and roll and R&B, a little bit of Country, some recent pop and a bit of every other kind for variety's sake. It would also have to allow me to choose which genre each day as the mood takes me. I am sure every Gransnetter would come up with a different list as our tastes vary greatly as they always have. Why on earth would we suddenly all like the same things because we had reached a certain age? What next? perhaps a music channel for men and a separate one for women?

Thankfully with access to You Tube, CD's and umpteen radio & TV music channels I can listen to what I want, when I want. A current favourite of mine for background music is BBC Alba which just plays music and gives weather and news updates until the programmes start in the evening.

I am a 60's rocker. I just happen also to be 70. I am not ready yet for my rocking chair, knitting and sweet smiles.

Anne58 Sat 30-Nov-13 16:41:19

Phew! I thought (and hoped) that you lot would agree!

I suppose we should feel sorry for the silly old bat woman who seems to think that age alone might determine someone's taste! How narrow minded can one get? No, wait, that could lead down an innumerable number of streets! (Now, that's a bit of an oxymoron, or something confused )

Anne58 Sat 30-Nov-13 16:42:09

Forgot to say, I was surprised that her comment was broadcast, as it was so daft.

merlotgran Sat 30-Nov-13 16:46:21

There's a radio station that caters very nicely for the over 60s thank you very much and it's called Radio 2.

Oh, and there's another one called Radio 3.

Oh, and another one called Classic FM

Does she think that once you hit 60 you can no longer twiddle knobs? hmm

Anne58 Sat 30-Nov-13 16:58:40

I can't accurately remember exactly which one she was moaning about, but think it might have been Radio 2

Personally all radios in the house and car are tuned to Radio 4 (the chap who "does" my car has learnt NOT to re-tune the radio whilst the car is in his tender hands! grin )

Part of the reason for this is that I want to choose what music I listen to, and when. As the mood takes me, I may turn the radio off and listen to Elbow, Mr P is a Queen fan (yes, I worry about that too!) and I will sometimes swap Fleetwood Mac for the Magic Flute or La Boheme.

Any chance of a whole load of us writing to Feedback and presenting the real view of this section of the population, rather than let this woman's comments be the last on the subject?

Lilygran Sat 30-Nov-13 17:01:06

Agree with all of you. It's nonsense! But it's what the BBC thinks, innit? So get rid of middle-aged/elderly experts who actually know what they are talking about and replace them with nubile and pneumatic girlies and buffed boys who can't speak proper and know how to read an autocue. Because it will attract a younger audience. hmm

merlotgran Sat 30-Nov-13 17:06:15

Silly woman. Why on earth would radio 2 not be suitable for the over 60s? Ken Bruce might have a thing or two to say about that.

Our radios are tuned to radio 4 in the kitchen, Classic FM in the greenhouse and (DH insists) radio 2 in the car. I'm beginning to think he's got a crush on Sally Traffic because he turns it up when the traffic report comes on even if we're only doing a ten minute trip into town.

Icyalittle Sat 30-Nov-13 17:08:25

Daft, just daft. Presumably what she really meant was music that she likes! Nothing happens genetically to people to change their eclectic tastes just because a birthday happens.
(Got us going thoughgrin)

We tend to have our radio tuned to a station that plays 60s and 70s music that is ideal (for us) as background to cooking, doing chores etc. However, even though that was "our era", not everything is to our taste – love the Stones but could do without Herman's Hermits, could listen to Johnny Cash all day but wouldn't give you tuppence for Tom Jones etc. And like the rest of you, there are lots of genres that appeal and always have whether I was 23, 33, 43…or 63 as I am now. I wonder who this self-appointed spokesperson for a whole generation is. Even more peculiar, I wonder what possessed Radio Four to give her airtime.

Charleygirl Sat 30-Nov-13 17:23:28

I love Queen and the Rolling Stones but also opera when the fancy takes me and I have been like that for more years than I care to remember. I am not a fan of most of today's music but that is personal taste. She is a stupid f***.

Marelli Sat 30-Nov-13 17:34:54

What some people might forget is that those over sixty enjoyed music from the Kinks, Stones, Animals etc. Is this person considering that the music to be played on this station should be gentle and soft with the odd bit of Glenn Miller thrown in for a bit of spice? Oh dear - heaven forfend!!

Nonu Sat 30-Nov-13 17:42:20

Hate to confess this but I do like Pitbull , in fact I was listening to him afternoon ,probably not many of our age have heard of him.
What the heck I say , my tastes are VERY eclectic I am glad to say.
In fact at the moment I am listening to Charlotte Church singing Christmas carols , I have never heard her before , she is GOOD , only bought it this afternoon .smile

absent Sat 30-Nov-13 17:43:06

I like Glen Miller – and the Andrews Sisters.

merlotgran Sat 30-Nov-13 18:37:26

I was looking at a poster in the lounge at Mum's nursing home yesterday. There were pictures of all the artistes that might appeal to them in chronological order. I expected to see Gracie Fields, Vera Lynn, Glenn Miller, Mario Lanza, Bing Crosby et al but seeing Elvis stuck on the end suddenly brought the whole scenario horribly close hmm

KatyK Sat 30-Nov-13 18:47:35

We listen to Smooth radio. Plays a lot of 60s and onwards, suits all ages.

FlicketyB Sat 30-Nov-13 18:49:37

I expect she is the kind of woman who is always complaining that she cannot find age appropriate clothes.

Nonnie Sat 30-Nov-13 19:21:56

Phoenix Do you think it could have been a gransnetter who is now crying and hiding her head in shame?[Grin]

dorsetpennt Sat 30-Nov-13 20:13:25

Rant away. I'm 70 in July and although I love the music from my youth there's plenty of music from these days I enjoy too. Who wants to be put in a particular category? It's like M and S 'Classic' range all beige and safe colours. Not for me.

Marelli Sat 30-Nov-13 21:03:34

absent - I like Glenn Miller as well, actually - especially Moonlight Serenade! smile

Deedaa Sat 30-Nov-13 21:14:49

Presumably Mick Jagger is still performing because he likes the music. So, if it's all right for him as a 70 year old great grandfather, it must be all right for the rest of us?
Not sure how they would cope with my musical tastes which range from Mozart and Stravinsky, through Bessie Smith, to the Beatles and the Kinks, the Levellers, Guns and Roses and Andrea Bocelli confused

Angel Radio makes a nice change - presenters are amateur, and mature...

Can be heard on the Internet:angelradio.co.uk
