Last year , we were given the care of our then 3 yr old GD - which we were very pleased about, obviously we have thought how when she get older we would explain the circumstances to her. but what has struck me is that, all the programs have - children living with parents, but it would be helpful I think to acknowledge that, these days it is not only that - there are single parent, and like us grandparents, acting as parents, a few more programmes like this would help I think - just so as it looks less rare

Mr Tumble (Justin Fletcher) is good TV for children if you want to see diverse families that aren't 2.4 plus mum and dad, and he integrates disabled children into his programmes in a helpful way that has helped my grandchildren to widen their understanding of how different, and equally valid, family life can be. They live mainly with mum, and with dad on a couple of days and nights a week, so they like to check out who their friends have in their family home. It's common for children to be in blended and separated families these days - a challenge sometimes when plans collide, but that happens in nuclear families, too.

Have you watched Grandpa in my pocket where the little boy has lots of adventures with his grandad? I know he still lives with his mum and dad but it's great fun. Was on at the theatre last year as well but we didn't get a chance to see it. I think when children get older there are programmes/books that cover all sorts of relationships. I'm not sure what books Jacqueline Wilson writes other than the Tracy Beaker ones but I'd assume most of her characters live less than 'normal' lives. Although there isn't a 'normal' these days.

Apparently Topsy and Tim is now on TV. Their creator, Jean Adamson, lives in our village. A lovely lady, I've known her for many years.

Hello chadsky I love reading stories to my grandchildren and quite a few seem to feature grandparents living with their grandchildren. I also second Tegan's suggestion of Grandpa in my pocket. It's a CBeebies programme. Nick Jnr, another children's channel has a programme for 2-5 year olds..it's called Z something, I will look it up for you. It features a Zebra who lives with his parents, his grandparents and his great grandparents.
merlotgran the new Topsy and Tim programmes were on television today. I read all of those lovely little books to my DD and now both GC enjoy them. I was so sorry to read in the newspapers, a few years ago, Jean Adamson had been hurt by someone who I think was trying to steal her bag? I hope she made a full recovery.

I'm sorry chadsky I mentioned the wrong channel. It's a Disney Junior programme and it's Zou the Zebra.

penguinpaperback, I was talking to Jean in the village shop just minutes before she was attacked whilst walking back to her house just a few yards away. Nobody saw it happen because the shop windows are covered up with displays and adverts. She was badly bruised and suffered a broken arm. A horrible thing to happen to an elderly lady.

Jean recovered from her injuries and is still active in village events. I think the man who attacked her was actually imprisoned for another crime. I don't think the police could prove he attacked Jean but I could be wrong.

Her husband, Gareth, sadly died about thirty years ago. Our children all have signed copies of their books and so do the DGCs

Thank you for letting me know Jean has recovered merlotgran.
Topsy and Tim have been much loved by DD and now the GC. DD named her cat Topsy when small. How lucky to have signed copies Of Topsy and Tim.smile
