Maybe this should be in Pedants' Corner but we tend to become familiar with daft new phrases and expressions thanks to radio and TV. Jamie Oliver can hold his hand up for many of them.

I've just heard DH remark, scornfully, 'That's NOT a Bad Boy, moron, It's a CUCUMBER.'

Not so long ago Jamie Oliver was referring to MR. Carrot and MR. Potato....Oh dear. hmm

Nobody does this in real life.....Do they?

Has anyone mentioned Going Forward?

My mother used to go insane if she heard me saying "these ones" merlot she got me out of it eventually.

I have been known to thank someone for a heads up now and again - sorry blush

I hate the overuse of the word 'passion'. Just read in a jewellers window 'diamonds are our passion'. The word gets used a great deal in job adverts - 'Are you passionate about customer service?'

Sick - meaning great for goodness sake!

blue sky thinking - what is that?

MamaCaz Tue 22-Oct-13 17:14:55

"I'll be (literally) gutted if I don't get through to the next round", as said by almost every contestant on the numerous TV talent / cooking shows.

annodomini Tue 22-Oct-13 17:38:59

And those footballing clichés: sick as a parrot; and over the moon. And why do those making a big effort always have to dig deep? One of my favourites was when an athletics commentator at (I think) the Montreal Olympics, stated that high jumpers were achieving 'greater height in depth.

Weather presenters saying that winds are going to ease up, meaning that they are going to get stronger!

merlotgran Tue 22-Oct-13 17:55:59

"Hard working families" because they are apparently the only families who matter.

Stansgran Tue 22-Oct-13 21:21:26

Devastated.

Deedaa Tue 22-Oct-13 22:07:02

"Gutted" oh, if only some of them could be!

Flowerofthewest Tue 22-Oct-13 23:11:13

No Brainer

Not rocket science

'basically'

Notso Tue 22-Oct-13 23:21:54

After a terrible event, friends & family saying they're 'in bits'.

Flowerofthewest Tue 22-Oct-13 23:30:11

Oh the Devastated word is certainly overused - 'She lost her purse, she was devastated' NO NO NO you lose a member of your family you are devastated, you find out you have cancer or your husband has a heart attack you are devastated!!!! thlangry

Iam64 Wed 23-Oct-13 07:41:16

'pick it up and run with it' - especially when used when discussing complex situations that need a plan

Grannyknot Wed 23-Oct-13 08:40:55

I have to put up with this sort of nonsense (see link below) all day at work, thankfully I now know (having read the article) what a matrix is (I still shudder at the memory of the awful green screen movie) www.theguardian.com/money/2013/oct/22/a-z-modern-office-jargon?CMP=twt_gu

I also wondered the other night, flicking through the TV channels, whoever thought it a good idea to broadcast a programme called "Shoplifter and Proud" (I didn't watch it).

KatyK Wed 23-Oct-13 09:53:15

There was a programme the other night called something like 'Inside A Nightclub Toilet !!

merlotgran Wed 23-Oct-13 10:49:39

merlotgran Wed 23-Oct-13 10:50:46

Deedaa Wed 23-Oct-13 21:12:33
