We went to see "Utopia" at the BFI on Thursday.
It's a very powerful examination of the past and present situation of indigenous Australians. Although I was aware that the aboriginal people have had a very raw deal, I was absolutely shocked to see the squalor in which they are now living, with an almost total lack of basic amenities. Many commentators said the conditions were as bad as those found in the poorest countries in the world and yet Australia is a very wealthy country. Some described the treatment of the aboriginal population as akin to that experienced by non-whites under apartheid in South Africa.
If anyone is interested, the film is on release in the UK in November and is being shown on TV in December.
