I love musicals - even in the sixties. I took my 85yr old grandmother to see the film version of The Sound Of Music and she adored it. I was a bit embarrassed when she stood up and applauded 'Climb Every Mountain' though. blush

I was watching West Side Story in the early 60s. That's a musical! smile

Deedaa Wed 04-Sept-13 20:57:37

One thing I did manage was the Cathy McGowan hair smile did quite well with some of the clothes too. I had a pair of shoes that she designed and they are still one of the best pairs I've ever had. Who would have believed then that the Queen of Cool would end up with a man who sang in musicals? In 1963 I would never have admitted to watching a musical grin

It was such a tragedy she died so young !

" Bob Geldorf made some very disparaging remarks about Karen Carpenter's voice, which I thought was a bit rich coming from him."

Unbelievable! Karen C had one of the most delicious voices of any popular singer - although she really only wanted to play drums...

Yes - we used to iron ours...shock

merlotgran Wed 04-Sept-13 10:18:34

If only hair straighteners had been invented then.

KatyK Wed 04-Sept-13 10:11:24

Oh yes it was the hair! My own rather thin locks could never get there in a million years. And the fact that she got near to all those pop stars (especially Beatle George) envy

whenim64 Wed 04-Sept-13 09:57:08

I aspired to having a curtain of hair like Cathy McGowan's. Glossy locks with no split ends was the ultimate achievement when I was 18!

nightowl Wed 04-Sept-13 09:36:21

Ah, didn't we all want to be Cathy McGowan KatyK? She was just so cool. I remember the competition(?) to decide whether you preferred cathy's hair turned under or flicked out. Answers on a postcard please......

Deeda They made similar comments in those days too. I remember Nancy Spain saying how ridiculous the opening words of Johnny Mathis's "Misty" were - "Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree". Mind you, she had a point.

And when JBJ was resurrected for a short time, I think in the 80's, Bob Geldorf made some very disparaging remarks about Karen Carpenter's voice, which I thought was a bit rich coming from him.

I was very sorry to hear about David Jacobs (although a bit surprised that he was still alive) I remember him first in Journey into Space when he seemed to play all the extra characters. I think it would be rather good to revive Juke Box Jury. Faced with some of the stuff that is released nowadays I can see the whole jury sitting there saying "What the was THAT?"

KatyK Tue 03-Sept-13 18:32:28

I love Chris's breakfast show too. He also does The One Show on a Friday.

bookdreamer Tue 03-Sept-13 18:13:49

Chris Evans has the breakfast show on radio 2 every morning and has won lots of awards for it. I love it. Makes me happy first thing in the morning and he is always so cheerful!!

feetlebaum Tue 03-Sept-13 17:51:44

... and no, I don't like the Evans - although I haven't heard anything of him for years.

feetlebaum Tue 03-Sept-13 17:50:14

Precisely..!

merlotgran Tue 03-Sept-13 17:32:19

Like Chris Evans, feetlebaum? grin

feetlebaum Tue 03-Sept-13 17:27:40

DJ was old-fashioned, in that he sounded professional, not like some herbert who'd wandered in off the street...

j08 Tue 03-Sept-13 16:44:10

I quite agree with you there merlot. smile

#wtfareweonabout grin

kittylester Tue 03-Sept-13 16:20:06

I remember Cathy McGowan showing us all how to sit on a bus, elegantly, while wearing a mini skirt. Knees together girls.

merlotgran Tue 03-Sept-13 16:07:37

jingle, I thought he was old fashioned then so I don't think he'd be old fashioned now because if you're not old fashioned now, you can't have been old fashioned then hmm grin

PRINTMISS Tue 03-Sept-13 15:24:24

It is strange, isn't it that some of the people we look back on and enjoyed on television are now being accused of all sorts of sexual harrassment. I rather think that some things were taken for granted then, whereas now that is not so. don't want to get into an argument here, just expressing my thoughts.

KatyK Tue 03-Sept-13 14:50:46

I loved Juke Box Jury. I didn't particularly notice David Jacobs, I was just interested in the pop stars of the day who appeared on it and the new records they were voting on. I always wanted to be Cathy McGowan blush
She still looks great on the arm of Michael Ball.

j08 Tue 03-Sept-13 09:27:08

he was so suave

I was mad on that David McCullum (Illyia Kuryakin in The Man from Uncle)

glammanana Tue 03-Sept-13 09:05:44
