Is anyone else watching this? I caught up with the first two episodes on iplayer and was surprised to find that it was set in [I assume] New Zealand, although, being by Jane Campion I should have realised. Not sure if I'm enjoying this but found myself wanting to watch episode three when it was on last night [which must mean that I am confused]. It's certainly different.

Where's Ana? She can't have missed the last episode shock! I've just realised what she meant by 'whose father' as well [I knew what I meant, I think]. It were a bit good, this series. I was watching it in bed last night and the biggest spider I've even seen dropped onto the bed and ran straight at me which added to the excitement.

Don't tell me I am an episode behind.

Ana Sun 11-Aug-13 12:14:12

Whose father, Tegan? confused

Tegan Sun 11-Aug-13 12:10:52

I'll see what the blog thinks....

Tegan Sun 11-Aug-13 12:10:27

Ana; I was just going to write that!! Especially as it turns out that he owned her mum's house. It also means she may be related to Tui as well, doesn't it? Do you think he was going to tell her that on the boat? And that he had something to do with the death of her father?

Ana Sun 11-Aug-13 11:56:19

Well, the action certainly speeded up last night - last episode next week!

I'm a bit concerned about Robin and Johnno's relationship though, as Matt Mitcham seems to be the father of most of the town's inhabitants under the age of 40...hmm

Tegan Mon 29-Jul-13 22:43:51

Nah; half watch it then check the blog; simples wink...

Ana Mon 29-Jul-13 22:40:30

I agree that you certainly can't afford to miss a few minutes here and there or you risk losing the plot entirely!

Hadn't realised about the actress being in Mad Men as I never saw that; lots of Emmy nominations floating around for the people in it. henetha; it's worth checking out the Guardian blog after each episode [I started doing that with The Killing]. It did say it was a bit Twin Peaks'ish, which can't be bad and goes some way to explaining why I haven't got a clue what's going on confused most of the time....

henetha Mon 29-Jul-13 21:55:45

Wasn't episode 3 weird! But I shan't give up on it as it's kind of compelling and I love the scenery and some of the actors.

Watched episode 1 so far. Lead actor played the president's daughter in West Wing as well. It is very similar in mood to The Killing only that was urban rather than rural.

Have just checked out the Guardian blog so I [kind of] understand what I've been watching; don't know what I'd do without the Guardian blog sad.

Got it all recorded, but not seen any of it yet. Last episode of The returned tonight - really looking forward to it.

this is the other 'local boy makes good'; I'd like to pretend that I'm doing the dancing [but I'm not].

No reason why the name should have reminded me of the other one, other than it had the same sort of rhythm and structure to it and both were rather obscure in their own way! Strangely enough one of the members of Late of the Pier had been working in New Zealand, having formed a collaboration with someone over there, but the group are now recording as themselves again [you learn something new every day]. Aka; don't even begin to try to understand my reasoning about this or anything else for that matter confused. I gave up years ago...

Ana Sun 28-Jul-13 16:47:02

No - the white one's OK (for the moment...)

This was in the first episode - the dog hairy Scotsman offered to Robin...

Aka Sun 28-Jul-13 16:44:51

Not watched last nights yet. I'm guessing it's that little white one sad

Ana Sun 28-Jul-13 16:35:48

The dog incident was shocking, wasn't it? Wasn't expecting that.

Aka Sun 28-Jul-13 16:33:53

Yes, the Matt and Judy show has me wondering.....hmm

I'm pleased your memory has returned Tegan though I'm struggling with the reasoning here. Ah! 'of the lake' and 'lake of the' ....got it confused

HildaW Sun 28-Jul-13 16:33:40

Have just remembered one of my all time weird guilty pleasure TV series. Few series got me hooked quite like Twin Peaks.....I've even got the music somewhere and would play it quite regularly. Now that was seriously weird!

Tegan Sun 28-Jul-13 16:24:29

D'you think the departed dog might turn up in The Returned as well, Aka? One good thing about Top of the Lake is that I've been trying to remember the name of a local group for ages and, for some reason Top of the Lake has reminded me that they were called Late of the Pier [no wonder I couldn't remember their name].

merlotgran Sun 28-Jul-13 16:19:07

I think I'll watch The Mill tonight. We normally watch Countryfile but they've changed the time and it has turned into the Matt and Julia show which is really annoying.

Aka Sun 28-Jul-13 16:11:10

I keep on watching both 'The Returned' and 'Top of the Lake' hoping to make some sense of them. I'm just waiting for Tui to pop up, reincarnated in the former, and all the water to drain out of the lake in the latter.

Thanks Grannyknot - that's something I was unaware of. I'll have a look at the gen on episode 3 and maybe pick it up again.
