Have any of you been watching this series on BBC 4 Saturday nights? I should have posted before as I feel that the series could be nearing it's end.
I love it - the inspector is delicious as is the scenery of Sicily where it is set. I find it so refreshingly realistic with storylines that are uncomplicated. Our detetective series produced here are so dark and depressing to watch.
With the juicy detective and the sunshine I feel totally uplifted after viewing.

I hobbled round Venice the year before I had my knees done Galen it wasn't too bad on the flat but there were an awful lot of bridges!!! Very glad we went though, there's no where else like it!

Sadly didn't bump into Guido or Vianello in any of the bars sad

Galen Wed 16-Jul-14 15:47:11

Actually she was supposed to have been conceived in Venice, but it turned out to be her brother and we felt he might prefer a different name.

Galen Wed 16-Jul-14 15:45:53

No! Although I have that book as well. Peter OToole's wife is called Venetia as well.

Stansgran Wed 16-Jul-14 14:45:30

Ah not the Georgette Heyer heroine?

Galen Tue 15-Jul-14 22:41:29

I love Donna Leon's stories.
Perhaps because it's set in my favourite place on earth.
Unfortunately I can't visit it any more as it's definitely NOT DISABLED FRIENDLY.
However I can never forget it as I named darling daughter Venetia.

I love the Brunetti family. He is the only fictional detective I can think of who doesn't have a dysfunctional family life.

Deedaa Tue 15-Jul-14 21:02:12

Remember Soutra that the Brunettis are going to be lumbered with their children until they are in their mid thirties - especially ith the property prices in Venice. I can't see them letting Paola's father set the children up with houses, it would be right against their principles.
And of course a university lecturer wouldn't work such long hours in Italy.
I adore Guido too, but I'm not sure I could live with a man who spends so much time reading Ancient Greek grin

Soutra Mon 14-Jul-14 23:41:09

Of course I meant Guido!

Soutra Mon 14-Jul-14 23:40:21

I ADORE Gzido Brunetti!smile and his wife who seems to be able to function as a respected lecturer in English Lit as well as cooking 3 and 4 course meals for her family who all eat at the table together - even the teenage children! What an idyllic lifestyle!

Better scenery whitewave and his legs are sexier grin

Yes I saw the Zen series when it was first shown, and so enjoyed it but now having seen our Sicilian detective I found I like that better.

Deedaa Sun 13-Jul-14 21:44:43

I think there were four of the Aurelio Zen stories on TV some time ago, but for some reason the BBC decided not to make any more. I wish they would do the Brunetti books. I know they've been done in Germany but Italian stories, filmed in German and then sub titled in English might be getting too complicated!

papaoscar Sun 13-Jul-14 20:40:39

Ps: I think that there is also a tv series of the Zen stories.

papaoscar Sun 13-Jul-14 20:39:20

Those who like Inspector Montalbano might also like his contemporary, Aurelio Zen, the Rome-based detective creation of Michael Dibdin. Starting with 'Ratking' his stories explore the dark side of Rome and the Varican whilst delving into some glorious-sounding italian restaurants and cuisine.

rosesarered Sun 13-Jul-14 20:17:10

I also like the series of Young Montalbano, have you watched this?

gangy5 Sun 13-Jul-14 20:11:19

I agree with you Soutra I also don't care that they are repeats and am enjoying them again the second time around. I do wish that there was some news of a new series in the offing!!

Soutra Sat 12-Jul-14 22:45:55

Saturdays have picked up again OK so these are repeats but I don't care smile

Thanx MaggieP ...have just put that into my automatic tv programme thingy. I see it's a 10 parter ...but in both Swedish and Danish! confused

Have actually sailed under that 'bridge' ...so hopefully we'll get scenes of both Copenhagen and Malmosmile

MaggieP Mon 16-Apr-12 16:45:52

Yes, it's been a great series, lovely man and scenery. He doesn't appreciate Livia enough though!
Watch out for The Bridge, another latest Scandinavian thriller, starting next Saturday on BBC 4 with much fanfare too.
So much to watch......grin

gangy5 Mon 16-Apr-12 11:05:53

You mischievious Band of Mumsnetters Whatever turns you on - he certainly turns me on!! O dear - not sure that I should put this!! - will have to check that I've enough pantyliners in stock for the next series!!!

greenmossgiel Sun 15-Apr-12 13:13:20

Well, my OH noticed that Salvo had bandy legs - and sneered (!) My OH doesn't have bandy legs, but his are very, very thin......I think he'd have preferred Salvo's bandy ones...grin

Stansgran Sun 15-Apr-12 13:04:35

yes but husband watching at the same time and CONSTANTLY asking for explanation as to the plot. What plot? who's looking for a plot? Advert for holiday in Sicily cut out and placed strategically on pile of newspaper.
You have made my day saying there will be a new season.

SOOP Sun 15-Apr-12 12:51:50

Mishap Is Montalbano good for us? Pulse rate quickens. Flush to the cheeks. Heartbeat up-beat. Extremities all of a tingle. Answer is ...YAY! grin

Mishap Sun 15-Apr-12 12:44:54

Calm down now ladies! - are you sure this is good for you?! What will OH think? You could always close your eyes and think of Salvo though!

SOOP Sun 15-Apr-12 12:41:07

Jacey My sentiments too wink
