Views on a cruise

To get back to OP, we came back a few weeks ago from a Baltic cruise with Tui out of Newcastle. Fantastic cruise, lovely friendly ship and great ports. Don't knock cruising until you've tried it. Never felt herded together or pushed into enforced jollity. You make of it what suits you but you can go to so many places in a couple of weeks and do your own thing wherever. We've been fortunate to go on quite a few different cruises and loved each one. Wish I had another planned.

Wait until Covid is conquered before cruising. We went on a European cruise last year and it was wonderful. The river cruises get pretty close to where you need to be, unlike the sea cruises which put on coaches to ferry you into the towns. They organise everything,though we do our own thing and pre book day tours because we like smaller tours and we like to pick and choose the itinerary. You can pre book via google ! The Med cruises are great and so is the Amsterdam to Budapest one, just fantastic and you meet lively people, too. We went with Scenic for that one and Viking for the Med and both were excellent.

Further to the many people 'doing their own thing' - We've been dithering for years about a river cruise in Europe as a different way of seeing the river itself. One hang-up is that we've assumed all along that the ship's docking point would always be some distance from the centre of wherever we are. So those who potter off on their own have miles of dock front to fight their way through before they get anywhere. Do maps show this? Do taxis come to the docking point? How is it done? How is it done?

The problem with a cruise ship is that it is a contained environment. If there are any bugs they spread like wildfire and turn it into a floating petri dish. You only have to look at recent events and all the cruise ships where coronavirus was rife and it is not always easy to be allowed off. I would never go on a cruise for that reason. Why would anyone risk it?

Never ever fancied a cruise- my idea of a nightmare- unless on small ship. Currently, both for environmental reasons AND Covid, and the awful way staff have been treated- it would be a total big NO for me.

We love cruising. Wev done 15 and booked to do Venice Dubrovnik etc this year.

Love cruising- been on a few. Would love to go again but unfortunately my cruise-mates are indisposed for one reason or another.

And I don't know anything about JE (unless she too has reasons for needing to cruise like my friend and Doodle) other than what she wrote in her post of Fri 20-Sep-19 17:10:37 which implies multiple cruises. Her choice - but surely she could 'own' the climate contribution?

JenniferEccles I think you might at least feel slightly guilty about all your cruising! remeber the saying about he only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing if individuals take no personal responsibility nothing will ever improve.

I can see with health problems why you would choose cruising - a good friend of mine has a daughter with ulcerative colitis, who needs to be near a toilet at all times, and they chose a cruise too.

humptydumpty thank you for the suggestion but we cruise to Norway and I’m not surer could cope with a long train journey. My DH has many and varied health problems which also mean he cannot sit with his legs down for many hours and he does enjoy the relaxation of cruising.
