Holidays 2016

Holiday? what's that, I normally only get the odd weekend to my Dad's although FiL often pays for us to have a few days away for our wedding anniversary.

Harrigran plan yourself something restful. I went to Florida a month after I finished my radiotherapy, and to be honest it was exhausting. (It was booked before was diagnosed) but a relaxing beach holiday might be just the ticket.

Narrowboat cruising for us; off to Kidderminster/Worcester/Droitwich and back on our own boat this summer-a really restful break for workaholic OH but less so for galley slave and lock girl, feeling my age sometimes! But we meet such lovely people and if the sun shines it is glorious; the deal is that every other year we holiday abroad so looking forward to that already!

We are looking forward to Cornwall in April and our favourite Greek Island, Kefalonia in June. I find researching holidays and the planning that goes into it almost as enjoyable as the holiday itself.
In the past I have put many road trips together in the US and Canada.
We have been very lucky with our holidays over the last 15 years but before that there wasn't much money for such things.
We will go away for our anniversary in Sept/October but not sure where yet - I'm busy looking as we speak.
Interspersed with the holidays are the short breaks which we find equally enjoyable.
I'm planning a big trip to Australia and New Zealand when we retire (some way off I'm afraid).

Since I've been a widow I've only been to Windowsill Bay and Ourgate.

Not moaning - one day I may have the courage to go on a solo holiday.

Had a very exhausting holiday last year .We drove to Italy, but OH will not accept it is too much for him now even though we took 4 days ,. I can't drive . So this year we have booked a week in south Devon in September after school holiday duties with DGC and the new DGC has arrived . I am so looking forward to a relaxing journey ( I hope ) this year. Also it means I can get back easily if my mother of 93 becomes ill. It will be a relief when I become an orphan- beautifully put NfK Dumpling !

All these holidays sound great. We've just been to Tenerife it was so lovely to see some sunshine. We usually go to Turkey every year but because of what's happening there the family would rather we didn't go. I personally don't feel we would be in any danger but as my daughter is expecting her first baby I don't want to worry her. Yesterday we booked for Malta for August we have never been before so I'm hoping we enjoy it.

take heart I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last October which resulted in a fairly big op so we weren't able to away for the winter. Felt terrible afterwards but have now recovered from the op and been given the all clear. So today we went into town and bought our tickets to Cambodia in November, returning the second week of Feb. Even if I don't feel too good at times I will have the heat, no cooking or washing and can just relax. Going to spend the summer months having trips to Wales.

My travel company has let me down and is no longer running a planned holiday in Normandy.I love France but could not manage a very active holiday with lots of walking involved.No problems with the language though.i should be grateful for suggestions.

You all sound very lucky!!!!! I spend 4 days a week looking after Grandchildren and my DH still works, every hour and day god sends too!!!! He is a workaholic! So fitting a holiday in is very tricky. We live near the seaside any way so it only takes a 20min walk and we are there.

I'm off to Tenerife in a couple of weeks with a group of friends, then off to Zante for a wedding in May, Norfolk in July, Gran Canaria with the family inAugust, and somewhere exotic in October for a big birthday, but not decided where yet. We love being retired. Also have a carribbean cruise booked for January.

Lovely family trips to Cornwall, with France in August and Berlin at Christmas. I could go to Far East in between with DH, but done all that and long haul travel horrendous start to finish. So I might just check into a health spa for a few days ON MY OWN ? Can anyone recommend one?

I retired in September & we booked a Panama canal trip to celebrate - we were due to go on 24th Jan but had to cancel less than a week beforehand as I was having investigations. Fortunately, they didn't discover anything sinister & my insurance paid in full, but our holiday plans are a bit muddled now! We've had long weekends in Galsgow, Llandudno & Cheltenham so far & are spending a week in Puglia (Italy's'heel') at the end on May for a wedding. We know it well & love it so looking forward to that. We will probably do a week in south Devon in late June & somewhere with warm sea like Croatia,southern Italy or Cyprus, for a week in early September. The wedding of my Goddaughter in October is giving us the opportunity to explore Kent, a county we know nothing about but research shows there are lots of interesting places for us to discover.
We're in beautiful Shropshire & the sun is shining but the wind is very cold!

tiggypiro and kazzer I agree, our tour of Indias 'Golden triangl' was our best ever holiday. Quite an experience. Something new around every corner. Hope we can visit more of India.

kazzer I did that same journey to Shimla as part of a holiday in India 2 years ago. It was absolutely fantastic and couldn't decide if the railway was an amazing piece of engineering or just bonkers. While waiting for it to set off a chap came down the platform selling food for lunch. We spent the equivalent of 60p each and had an excellent meal. We were not travelling 1st class on that train and to say it was 'atmospheric' was an understatement but brilliant. Make sure you go to the loo before you get on the train and I would suggest that using a loo in one of the stations you stop at is a better idea than using the one on the train !!
We had no 'Delhi belly' but did take some medication 'just in case'. On occasion if we felt a bit 'not quite right' we took the medication and had no problems.
I am so envious as our Indian holiday was one of the best we have ever had. I hope you enjoy yours as much.

Woke up to the Cyprus hijack this morning with DH saying typical of our choice of holiday. But it's all calmed down and we won't cancel or Paphos cancelled. We have a family wedding in the south and we've booked a November holiday in the Far East cruising up the Mekong into China.

Nothing booked this year. We went to NZ in Sept last year to visit our son and now feel that we should be going back again but can't decide when, how to get enough time off work and how to afford it! Consequently we feel guilty thinking about planning anywhere else. Hope your chemo goes ok Harrigan and you're able to plan somewhere afterwards to look forward to.

We go to Wales twice a year also have small holiday home in Burton Bradstock in Dorset also have small yacht so get around a good bit being retired is the best thing can do what you want when you want and go where you want we work for it so lets enjoy

In May, my travel buddy and I are off on the ferry to France for a couple of nights then back. Always such a nice break and dirt cheap!

Then Sept to New Zealand (not looking forward to those flights!) to see my beloved family, first time in 5 years!
Thank goodness for Skype but never quite the same as actually sharing the same space with them. My arrival will be a birthday surprise for my son on his 40th, just have to hope he wont have a heart attack at seeing me!

Two short breaks going on 'cultural tours' with a club we belong to - York and Liverpool. As we retired to the Suffolk seaside every day's a holiday.

Coolgran65 do you take Pramipoxele for your restless legs? I suffered for years before a friend told me about it. Have had to increase the dosage twice but it is a great help

I'm having a spate of holidays this year for a change as I have spent the last couple of years being available to cover at work for other people to have holidays. Next month we go on a rail holiday in Scotland taking in the isle of Skye. In July my DD and I take DGS away to Devon for a week, then in September DP and I go to Pompeii. I've been talking about Pompeii for about 10 years and I've got fed up with hearing DP telling people the volcano is going to erupt again and we will end up as the next exhibits, so we are finally going for it.

You must try Croatia if you have never been we are returning there this year in May. It is the most beautiful country and the people are delightful - haven't read rest of comments so don't know if others have said the same

No holidays for us even though we are retired. DH has a chronic lung condition and is on oxygen 24/7 so its very difficult to find a time when he is well enough to travel anywhere (except for hospital appointments). Also I have an adult disabled daughter and I need to be on hand for her. Having said that I enjoy hearing about other people's holidays. As Annsixty said: go while you can and enjoy yourselves. Travel the world for those of us who are unable to travel.

Take as many holidays as possible whilst you can. There will come a time when like me when you are unable to travel but you will able to look back and remember. After my husband retired we toured Europe for ten years in a caravan. After he died I went away as many times a year as I was able to afford mostly travelling alone until I was 83 when worsening osteo arthritis made it difficult.
