Whatever happened to polo necks?

I was looking at jumpers online, and saw one polo necked sweater. Now, I was a big fan in my youth, but it made me realise they are few and far between nowadays.
I even had wee pretend polo necks I wore under v necked sweaters or open necked blouses which gave the illusion of a sweater.

They've had the bottoms chopped off and are now called "neck-warmer inserts", I think.
Polos were always too high for my neck, I spent the whole time pulling at it like a vicar on a hot day.

Like these?
I’d rather have a full jumper.

I got several from M&S a few years ago in a lightweight ribbed material in several different colours. They are very useful to wear under dresses, tops or jumpers for extra warmth.

Uniqlo have cashmere ones and the heat tech ones which are very light and are used as a base layer.

M&S sell merino wool roll necks that look quite close fitting, and of course there is their thermal range of roll necks.
Personally find them quite claustrophobic plus I have a short neck (duck not swan) and a couple of chins which look even more prominent perched on top of a roll neck grin, very unflattering!

Have you thought of a heatgen type vest underneath? The sort you find in M&S?
Then you can wear whatever you fancy over the top.

Lots of other makes and other colours.

Yes indeed, I have them in different thicknesses and in both white, grey and black. Wear one under everything I wear, once I have started to wear one (I have both sleeveless, short and long sleeved ones) they don't come off until the spring. They are brilliant. Wash them gently though or they shrink.

I used to live in skinny rib polo necks. Then they started to give me a double chin, so I changed to turtle necks which sit lower but still keep me warm.

I'm not keen on polo necks because they make my neck itch, but contrarily I do like scarfs.

During the winter I wear a cotton one under v-necks, fleeces, cardigans, etc. Layers are warmer than one thick or woolly one.

The last time I saw a polo neck it was being worn by the Milk Tray Man in that series of adverts a few decades back.

(All that palaver for a box of Milk Tray? Ha! Ha!)

I forgot to say that all my roll necks are from a small local shop who sold them last year in every colour under the sun. They are wool, but not too thick so easy to wear under a jacket or cardigan.

If you do an internet search there are quite a few, seem to be called roll necks now, Cotton Traders have 4/5 if not more.

Roll neck is different to polo neck, the latter being much larger than a roll neck. I am wearing a polo neck today for the first time this year as it is rather chilly and wet here. I usually roll mine down double so it could assemble a roll neck as I don't like them to cover all my neck. I love the warmth from them though.

Always wore a black one back in the day. Now I can’t stand anything tight or heavy around my neck.
Saying that I do like a lightweight snood.

Oreo Thu 22-Oct-26 21:22:39

Never liked them, as others say they make you too hot and feel claustrophobic.

JackyB Thu 22-Oct-26 20:51:02

I have a few but don't wear them. As others have said, I feel trapped in them and the woollen ones itch.

When I see someone wearing a long-sleeved dress, I also think it looks as if they are trapped in - like a body bag or a straitjacket. Claustrophobic!

Polo necks don't seem to be in Vogue.
I love them in the Winter.
I can't find twin sets that are a reasonable price.
I really used to love to wear them with kilts-another item which has zoomed up in price.

Polo necks have never gone out of style. That’s unless you follow trends.
I’m never without a white, cream, navy, black, grey, tan polo neck jumper
The tan and cream ones are fluffy lined. They feel gorgeous.

My winter uniform is to wear polo/roll necks under my jumpers. I like white ones, but have several in different colours that blend with my jumpers.
Last year M&S had some called “funnel necks. Not so close fitting and no roll over.
I haven’t looked this year, but I expect they’ll still have them, maybe not just white this year.

Delila Thu 22-Oct-26 18:45:14

Woolovers have them (made from wool obvs 😊)

Shel1951 Thu 22-Oct-26 18:36:26

I have lots in different colours, I purchased online in packs of 3 and 5, they come out in winter to go under tops.

DeeAitch56 Thu 22-Oct-26 18:27:35

At their height polos tended to be a skinny rib style regrettably I no longer am

AuntieE Thu 22-Oct-26 17:34:31

I did not know polo necks had gone out of fashion, but then I wouldn't as I never could bear to have one on for more then a few seconds.

I do remember how hard it once was (when I was a teenager) to get a jumper without a polo neck.

I had to look up turtlenecks when I search for a polo necked jumper otherwise I was inundated with polo shirts. I think it is because we are becoming more americanised!

poppysmum Thu 22-Oct-26 14:01:35

i bought some cotton 'polo' necks the other day to pop under sweat tops when chilly, they seem more like turtle necks and do not sit properly under them sort of keep flipping up and rolling in an awful looking heap
years ago i had some nylon ribbed polo necks in orange navy black and white, they looked lovely alone or under, wore for years too

Lostmyglassesxx Thu 22-Oct-26 13:52:39

Polo necks are on trend they’re everywhere ! Uniqlo have lightweight wool all high street stores have various weights and styles …
