Changing tone of grey hair

I was blonde when young, now mainly grey. It is a steely grey and I'd rather be 'ash' - how to do it?

Talk to your hairdresser or try a semipermanent colour for blondes, pearl blonde or beige blonde?

I never change the top of layers of my hair as I hate that badgeer look when you dye it all over. I do the underneath which lightens the top considerably as the grey hairs are actually transparent. Once it starts growing out, the difference in colour isn't so stark so you don't get into that repetitive cycle of over dying. If I get really desperate between dyes, I just spray a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide to keep me ticking over. It works for me and I had dark brown hair so should be more iron grey.

I've gone pure white. Bloody love it. Occasionally use a purple shampoo and conditioner but don't need it, it's magnificent. My only problem is I'm halfway through a 12 week chemotherapy treatment and worried it's going to fall out and return completely different! So far so good though.

Hairdresser. Balayage blonde.

I can’t afford balayage, I’d use a wash out ash blonde, see how it looks.

I stopped using semi-permanents because I found they stained my hair much longer than I thought they would so I had that badger look!

Good luck Grandmaof8

Made me laugh out loud. I also thought of a skunk too.

I am a (former) reddish mouse. I buy a small conditioner bottle from Superdrug called Colour Effects. It is a wash in that fades after a couple of washes but blends in my roots really well. I get a professional colour 2x per year as it improves the very poor quality of my hair, but this keeps it going between.

They do 3 or 4 different blonde shades too, and at £3 for three goes, it will not break the bank

Interesting to read that there is a peroxide spray. Does that work as well as using it in a liquid form to create highlights - with fingertips ?

You won’t be able to lighten hair with a toner, the only thing that will do that is peroxide.

I'm white now. My daughter gets a rinse which somehow smooths out the difference between the white snd grey hairs. It looks really good.

I like the sound of Colour Effects - it might just add a bit of warmth during the winter.
