How can you be 92 and look so stunning? envy
Joan Collins at Cannes Film Festival.

Wyllow3 Thu 14-May-26 00:59:09

Well.... I'd like to be weller and be able to go out more on walks and see more of family, but I would hate every single moment and the artificiality of it all.
I'd rather spend 2 hours with someone I'm fond of on a sunny day than all the glitz.

Kate1949 Wed 13-May-26 23:36:14

Well as I sit here in my old tatty joggers, baggy jumper, hair (which is artificial) grabbed up in a thingy, I would love to be glitzy, glam and sparkly in Cannes.

Obviously Joan is not going into a mental decline, as so unkindly mooted on this thread, she is still working and has just completed another film The Bitter End about the final years of the Duchess of Windsor released this month.

As posted on another thread, thanks DollyD 🙂

That is probably why she has styled her hair à la Duchess of Windsor too.

I'm not against make up per se. But I`recall as I say that a friend way back who was wearing lipstick and it was seeping into cracks round her mouth, or eye make up that got stuck in creases? Better spend the money on skin care.

As regards the O/P, imo its just got to the gross level of artificiality that signifies the desire to be appreciated just for how you look and the pressure to look young, younger = attractive

And yes I believe its part of a culture that is damaging to girls and young women, some using botox and so on in their early 20's to get "the look".

it doesnt need to be that way.

Wyllow3 Wed 13-May-26 22:56:41

Dont be daft, as we say in Yorkshire..

No. I look after my skin, that really matters and my body as I have done yoga and other exercise lifelong.

Because I just loved yoga and other exercise. Face cream initially as my skin got dry after swimming then because a matter of wanting to skin care in some kind of natural way.

Yes I want less aged skin without wanting to plaster over it. And remove facial hair. The ususal stuff that we often have whole threads for - how to get rid of facial hair, best skin cream for different conditions and some skin treatments.

Of course it's totally different if you have a skin condition that you want to conceal or are ill in some way.

The "natural healthy" look I guess? But no one I know expects anything else?

Maybe it depends on the circles different people move in? I don't know? I always worked in jobs where it wasn't considered necessary like SSD and health in fact glam would have been inappropriate for vulnerable clients or community work.

Jealous? I've never aspired to look like a made up artificial doll anytime in my life. I've never wanted

- or needed - to look like a painted doll - for that's what it's all about. Yes, my thoughts ar informed by whole generations of women trying to attract men's gaze:

It's actually not necessary. And most men, when they unwrap the package?

Well, lots do.
Lots don't
And some of us do sometimes.

Wear makeup I mean 😂😂😂

But then I'm not a film star. Not now anyway.
Are you?

Why do we continue to put these women under such scrutiny?

I admire any woman that gets to be so old and hasn't committed murder...!

We do it because the alterntive is to implicitly accept their presentation of womanhood as something where our greatest value is youth and we cannot honour and accept age but alwys hde it and try to look younger than we are.

If we do not call out these misrepresentaions of womanhood, who will?

I don't understand your argument.

This woman is 92 years old- what kind of womanhood is she misrepresenting?

How is she dishonouring or not accepting her age? How can you hide your age at 92?

Just because she doesn't look like the late Queen or even the Queen Mother?

Where they better representations of womanhood?

I just don't get it.

Leave Joan alone.

Allira Wed 13-May-26 22:27:32

I began to wonder whether it was the first sign of mental deterioration.
Whatever next M0nica!

You don't think Joan looks good, fair enough, we are all entitled to our opinions but that really is going too far.

dragonfly46 Wed 13-May-26 22:25:51

I am amazed Monica that you have been spending all day pondering about this photo.

Silvershadow Wed 13-May-26 22:22:24

Joan Collins looks fabulous for 92. Anyone who says otherwise is just jealous. As for the hairstyle she is advertising her new film where she plays Wallis Simpson who also wore her hair in that scraped back style. Joan Collins is to be admired for her still working at 92! Good on her. She’s fantastic and glam to the last.

M0nica Wed 13-May-26 22:22:14

I am an admirer of Joan Collins. She usually looks and dresses with great style and glamour

But this picture shocked me. She is wearing a dress than many 30 year olds could not wear, let alone a woman of 92 and I am not sure what she has done to her face and hair, but unless someone had told me it was Joan Collins, I would not have recognised her.

When you see such changes in someone of this age, going from spot on- to looking really peculiar, you remember they are mortal and how many people of this age slide so uickly from being in the world mentally to beginning to behave in uite bizarre ways. Like turning up at a glamorous event dressed and made up as she is in the picture. I have worked with older people and have seen this transformation many times.

My thoughts have been evolving over the day. The main reason I think that I thought it was derimental to women is that if an older woman, who generally always looks absolutely fabulous suddenly starts thinking she needs to wear clothes that are difficult for even a young woman to wear. The message they are supportting is that women are nothing if they are not young. It devalues older people as not adeuate because they are no longer young.

However as my thoughts have evolved it has occurred to me that when someone usually so well turned out and attuned to every presentation nuance, gets things as wrong as Joan Collins did at this event, I began to wonder whether it was the first sign of mental deterioration.

Saturn Wed 13-May-26 21:34:24

Joan Collins looking fabulous 👏👏

dragonfly46 Wed 13-May-26 21:28:29

I don’t think there is such a thing as mutton dressed up as lamb. It is a horrid expression. Everyone is entitled to wear what they feel comfortable in.
There is nothing wrong with a bit of glamour at any age.
How boring if we all wore tweeds and twinsets after the age of 60!

DollyD Wed 13-May-26 21:15:58

Monica, this is the seventh comment on this thread disparaging the way Joan Collins looked and dressed on the red carpet.
To the point of stating that she is “choosing to do something that is detrimental to other women”.
Can you please explain how it is detrimental to other women and why Joan Collins’ looks and dress has triggered you so much?

foxie48 Wed 13-May-26 20:38:43

What on earth is detrimental about Joan Collins wearing a wig and getting dolled up to go to a big event? Monica Afaiac she could go wearing a bikini, wellington boots and carry a snorkel, totally up to her.

Tenko Wed 13-May-26 19:49:15

She’s 92 , imo she can wear what she wants. And she’s at Cannes and has to glam up . She’s always been glamorous and is an actress from the Rank Organisation, and back then actresses had to look super glamorous.
I took my mum to see her one woman show years ago and she was fabulous. Interesting and had the ability to laugh at herself .
I loved Dynasty back in the 80s and Joanie showed the Americans how to do glamour .

Lomo123 Wed 13-May-26 19:46:51

I love Joan Collins, shes old school glamour. She looks fabulous.

If I manage to reach the age of 92 I'll damn well wear what I want and look exactly how I want to look. That's my attitude now at 77 and I doubt it will change. I hate women putting down other women for the choices they make, why don't we just focus on doing what we want and letting others do the same as long as it's legal.

If a woman is choosing to do something that is detrimental to other women, then yes, I will put them down.

Allira Wed 13-May-26 19:30:13

I prefer that hairstyle.

MartavTaurus Wed 13-May-26 19:28:16

Maybe she has a penchant for a certain style and wants to stick to it?
40 years ago, but not quite as showy.

Allira Wed 13-May-26 19:25:06

At her age to wear a dress that would be challenging to anyone in their 30s

Oh dear, looking at myself I'm wearing an outfit similar to what I wore when I was 18.

Must learn to grow up and become more mature at my age.
Must find the photo and look at my hair, it could be the same style though 😂

foxie48 Wed 13-May-26 19:23:11

Just to add, I had my regular "skin booster" treatment on Monday. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to see plumper, better hydrated skin. I'm often complimented on my skin and I always say what treatment I have. Even OH who would barely notice if I lost a leg says he can see a "glow" to my skin as the treatment settles and at 77, that's good enough for me!
