If you have pearls (of any kind), do you wear them?

I’ve been making an effort to wear all my earrings, and realised I haven’t worn any pearl earrings for years. So, I put a pair on today, and I enjoyed wearing them again - but it got me thinking, you don’t see pearls worn much at all now, except by the royals, and I wonder why - I’ve got a necklace too, but I haven’t worn that either, not for probably 25 years.

I keep seeing part of this thread title in the list and expecting it all to read as "If you have tears, prepare to shed them now"

They are all old wives tales though, sapphires and amethysts also carry bad luck connotations, but I don’t think people believe any of them these days.

I also grew up with shoes on the table (new in box) are unlucky. It's unlucky to put up an umbrella indoors. Friday 13th is unlucky. Plus a whole range of other superstitious sayings.
I don't believe any of them, just as I don't believe pearls or opals bring bad luck.

I'm 60 never worn them...my mums 89....never seen her wear them

I have two sets, both choker length. I wish they were a bit longer as I think they would be more wearable. One set belonged to my MIL, and the other was a gift from work after completing 20 years service.

I should maybe try layering with a gold chain as suggested above.

I wore beautiful natural pearls at my wedding but generally just clutch them nowadays.

My mum left me a small pearl necklace. and I gave it to a supposed friend as a.ths k you because she helped me when I was in a very bad way. But I wish I hadn't now, because we fell out not long afterwards.

My mother was born a few years before your mum Flappergirl so I too grew up with the expression pearls are for tears. I'm also familiar with opals being unlucky.

flappergirl Sat 11-Oct-25 19:58:44

My mum (born 1919) always said that "pearls were for tears" so she never wore them. I must admit I've never heard that expression other than from her. She said opals were unlucky too and never wore those either, but I believe opals are generally considered to be bad luck because of the danger from mining them.

I have a string of pearls. I don’t know their origin but was given them by a colleague of my father when I was in HK. They may be worth something but may be totally worthless.
I thought I would buy my DD some for her 21st.
One of my clients gave me a top tip. She moved in the highest circles. She told me not to waste my money. Buy a cheap string and get the local jeweller to put a decent looking clasp on it!
I bought DD a sleeping bag instead for her gap year.
Glad they are back in fashion though I will get mine out again.

I have pearl earrings and a pearl necklace given to me by DH on our 30th wedding anniversary.

I also have a gold and pearl necklace similar to Mary berry’s bequeathed to me by mum.

I do like pearls I must say. I don’t wear them as often as I should really, but they don’t look right in the garden or trogging around the country

I've fished out my pearls and been wearing them today. smile

Pearls are back in for 2025. Necklaces to be worn with fine chains and half in half out with a collar. See fashion on line

I have pearls DH gave me for our Pearl Anniversary, earring to match which were made by a family friend (a silversmith), I love wearing them but would not wear them every day - although I do wear earrings EVERY day - would feel undressed without them! I also have my mothers string of pearls, both my daughters wore them on their wedding days at their request - not as a necklace but wound round as a bracelet. When I was a little girl I had a single seed pearl on simple gold brooch which I was allowed to wear for birthday parties and the like - must try to find it!

I only have pearls of wisdom😁

Aldom Fri 10-Oct-25 10:08:20

Ooops....OYSTERS....not Otsters!??

Aldom Fri 10-Oct-25 10:06:43

As a result of reading this thread I did some research about cultured pearls and cruelty to oysters. It's true that otsters suffer as a result of being opened multiple times and grit inserted to start off the pearl making process.
I had never thought about this aspect and certainly had no idea that otsters suffered.
Thank you to the poster who mentioned this on here.
We're never too old to learn.

Yes I love mine.

sunglow12 Thu 09-Oct-25 21:52:30

Yes I wear my two pearl necklaces from time to time

Lilyflower Thu 09-Oct-25 21:22:48

I love my pearls and wore them this evening to the Parish Council meeting. My daughter also gave me a double string she had made from a very long string she no longer wore. She had a clasp made by a Hatton Garden jeweller. I absolutely love them.

Does anyone really clutch her pearls?

I have never seen anyone do so.

It's just an expression AuntieE....grin

Diplomat Thu 09-Oct-25 19:50:32

Oops, sent before finished! Like others have said, they go with everything. Also have a pearl necklace but rarely wear.

Diplomat Thu 09-Oct-25 19:48:20

I love freshwater pearls and wear lots of all types and colours. Well I say lots I don’t eat to go to many occasions, ut they will accessorise with almost anything…no longer is it just a pearl necklace with a jumper and cardigan a la Grace Kelly, but they go with almost anything. I have a lovely large flat black/ purplish freshwater pearls and wear drop earrings.. wore them today to the hospital. The gent who took me commented on how lovely. They were cheapish from China. I remember looking at a multi strand necklace of pinkish/ grey / cream freshwater pearls back in the early 80s and wishing I could afford them. Now I can buy loads for a lot less than they were asking then. Similarly some ‘normal’ pearls, but I prefer the look of the lovely irregular freshwater ones!
