Wedding - what can I wear instead of a fascinator or hat?

My son will get married next year and I am very unlikely to wear a hat or fascinator as neither suit me.
I have very fine flat hair and a fascinator just sits on top and looks stupid.

I didn't wear one for my other sons marriage a few years ago.

I'm sure neither my son or daughter in law will care, they just want us there.

It is not common for most women in Spain or France, however, millinery is making a come back ..

Hop into a large millinery shop or Department Store, and try on a few !! You may be surprised and find one or two that suit you perfectly with a shoulder length Bob.

Also look at some of the latest magazines (bridal and fashion) and check out the photographs.

Something could appeal.

I HATE hats and don't really like fascinators. Why not go with a nice hair style. Personally I think it dates back to the age when people used to wear hats on a Sunday to go to church. How many do that now ?
Few people can wear hats successfully and even fewer people can actually wear black - both of these guidelines are often ignored.

I have nice silver hair, beautiful above the shoulder bob. Our daughters are convinced that I should wear pretty combs for weddings, so I do.

Prior to my DS’s wedding last year I went to a hat boutique and tried on various different styles of hats and fascinators. What I did discover is I don’t suit fascinators, but did buy a large brimmed hat, which I actually loved. My middle DS is getting married next year over in Barcelona and I’ll go back to the hat shop once I’ve bought my dress. It does make you feel quite special

I’m not a hat person at all but, when my daughter got married she persuaded me to get an appointment with a local lady who hired out hats. I ended up wearing a much larger hat than I would ever have chosen for myself, felt like a million dollars and got lots of compliments. It was a designer hat, expensive to hire but worth every penny.

I'd always hated hats and they swamped me as have a little face. However, when ourson got married (over 20 years ago) I hired one, felt amazing and actulook good in the photos. I wore a different one to our elder daughter's wedding and loved it, but at our young daughter's wedding, they seem to have gone out of fashion....

I don’t wear hats and the thought of some little bit of confectionary on top of my head didn’t appeal at all so no I did not wear a hat to any of mines weddings
Why do you feel you have to ? I don’t get it
You don’t have to bow to convention
Have a nice haircut wear clothes and shoes that suit you but don’t be bullied by convention to wear something you d rather not

Absolutely right BlueBelle. I wouldn’t have felt like myself at all if I’d worn anything on my head at my AC’s weddings. The MOTG tried to persuade me at my DD’s ( I think she wanted to!) but the MOTB at my DS’s didn’t wear anything either. Just do what you’re most comfortable with surely?

Agree. They are very fashionable at the moment. My GD's wear them. Being padded they are much more visible and come in some beautiful colours.

Remember that at some point during the day you will take the hat or fascinator off. Make sure that you don’t get ‘hat hair’ after you take it off.

For son no:2 wedding, I had my shoulder length hair put up, then I ordered hair slides on line with orchids attached, and had them slotted in at the back. It really looked lovely and I had many compliments.

There is no need to wear a hat.

I would look at a possible straw hat and add some fresh flowers,(that you can wrap round in wet tissue and then put in small phial or wrap around in clingfilm. Then choose a ribbon that matches your dress in some way, wrap it around the sunhat and tuck and pin the flowers on the inside of the ribbon. Result should be easy to wear, provide you with a new sunhat for later, and you should plenty of smallish flowers that can be used.

I would go for something that smells lovely too. it will also be light to wear, but give a nod to the occasion, whilst not costing you a great deal and not being difficult to wear. You could check with the other mum what she might be wearing, but the great thing is that doing this with fresh flowers means that it will be an individual choice and there will be no one else that will be exactly like you. If you liked you could then press the flowers later as a reminder of the day. Enjoy your day

Personally I would feel ridiculous in a hat, and even more so in a fascinator, it's just not "me"
instead I wore pretty hair clips and wore my hair in a more styled version of my normal look.

I felt comfortable and happy, but would definitely not have felt like this with a hat or a fascinator.

Fascinators often look silly, I think. Lots of good suggestions here so a little thinking outside the box needed- why not ask your hairdresser for some advice, and even have them provide a specail style with a pretty adornment for the day?

Just go bareheaded. This hat and fascinator fashion at weddings is ridiculous and old fashioned.

Oh, I think Camilla looks pretty good in her hats.

The Etsy site recommended by Elless certainly has a wonderful selection, if some of them are rather pricey for what they are.
I love hats and headbands, so would need no encouragement. However I have a big head 😁 and find headbands in general can be too small for a good effect.
I haven’t been impressed by Camilla’s occasional monster hats…

Can you make or have made an "adult" clip?
Maybe something with wired beads?
