Does anyone influence what you wear?

God rest my lovely late mom. I wouldn't have taken styling advice from her. My mom hadn't got much of a clue on it. I used to take her clothes shopping.

My mom didn't want to look like most of her age and she wasn't dressing like them either.

I'm a very unique dresser and have own colourful quirky style. My daughter and i are very different dressers

Esmay - Re your tall overweight friend who’s influenced by her 13 yr old Dau… you don’t have to say anything but I do know a picture says a thousand words. Take a group picture on your next outing. If she’s front and center and sees the picture she may see herself for the first time compared to the rest. Don’t say a word. Worth a try.

GrannyZoom - yes, a sales clerk will always compliment you in order to make a sale. Better to ask other shoppers for honest opinions - they’ll give it to you 😆. But your own instincts is best barometer. Also - don’t forget to SIT down while trying on and see how it works for you. Sometimes you have to put back on the rack!

Oh no! I have an adult son and daughter, and two adult grandchildren. They would never advise me on clothing. I am my own person, and normally dress casually, but I brush up well for a special occasion, and they know that.

My DD introduced me to popsy dresses and snag tights but I choose my own sytles/colours.

I tend to go with what I think suits me or what catches my eye in my favourite shops. I also notice what people are wearing on TV & I watch a few people (around my age) on You Tube who do clothing try ons.
If I go shopping with my daughters or my friends I might ask their opinion but as we all have our own style and tastes I tend to make my own mind up. My daughters have good taste and will comment or compliment me on my outfits. My youngest daughter would certainly tell me if something really didn’t look right. The other day I was wearing what I thought was a nice olive coloured needle cord shirt dress, she asked me where I’d brought it from, when I told her she just said ‘oh..I thought it might have been from a charity shop’ I wasn’t quite sure how to take that!

My son probably doesn’t even notice what I’m wearing and I’ve never been clothes shopping with him since he was a little boy.

No. I dress for myself. I do follow what the latest trends are in shoes, clothes, accessories and hair. I make up my own age appropriate wardrobe.

I am trying to get into more colors as I’ve aged… professionally had built my wardrobe around black/grey. Now I need more spark at this age!

I too love clothes. I am influenced by photographs in magazines, manikins in shop displays and what passerbys are wearing. I am attracted not only by styles but colour combinations. I’ll think gosh must try those two colours together. I hardly ever throw anything out as I have chosen with care. I shop a lot from my own wardrobe and it’s very satisfying to match items up and make a new outfit. My daughter s taste is nothing like mine!

I love clothes shoes makeup etc and i dress to suit me i always try to be the best you can be and i have to say its a great feeling when you know you look your best

No. My daughter and I are similar shapes but we like very different styles. I think by the time we get to our age (I'm 76) if you are at all interested in clothes, you know the styles you like and feel comfortable wearing. I have one friend who does often give me her (unwanted) opinion on my clothes (the latest was the backhanded compliment - 'That top is very nice and suits you, not too patterned like most of the tops you wear')! I can never think of a good reply at the time. Perhaps just 'Thanks for the compliment' and ignore the negative even though I'd really like her to know that some of her unsolicited comments are very hurtful?

Plenty of people saying they have their own style and are never influenced by others. But I feel we all are, subtly, by advertising, TV viewing, what’s available, etc. Sometimes it’s good to reevaluate what you are wearing and try something different?

Lol that’s so funny mums of sons don’t dress as well.. as a mum of sons I think you need to get out more. Both my daughter inlaws mums have asked me to go shopping with them for clothes as they say I seem to get it right on what to wear. Daughters don’t always get it right

I always felt as I got older I wouldn’t be influenced and would wear what I wanted to. When I was in junior school I went to dance classes and the teacher had bright yellow shoes with daisies on and I thought they were amazing and crazy and I’ve never forgotten that. I don’t often seen clothes that I fall in love with so if I do I try and treat myself where possible. I haven’t got to eccentric dressing yet but who knows….

If I follow my daughters advice I end up buying things I don’t like when I get them home.
A continuing influence is my mothers voice in my ear saying you look like a sack of spuds in that! And at the time I was a size 10! She was very chic.
So I buy what I like!! 😀

I used to be influenced by DH until one day he said that VPL was ‘quite attractive’. It was then that I realised he had no taste whatsoever!

No - I have a ‘uniform’ - comfortable trousers (joggers for at home) - polo necks in various thicknesses (hate a bare neck) and Fitflop trainers or sandals plus a pair of Doc Martens. If a very hot summer, have a couple of long linen dresses - so I can wear nothing underneath!

I have put this on Gransnet before but worth a repeat. I asked my younger daughter ( adult) what she thought of the top I was trying on, her reply
" it's alright for you mother but I wouldn't wear it " make of that what you will

I really listen to my daughter as she has brought me into the 21st century. She is tasteful and good with colours and shoes! However if I listened to my mother I would still be in pleated skirts snd frumpy blouses. My daughter has taken years off me and I am really pleased with the result.

No, nobody influences me at all.

My DD may say, that looks nice, if she sees something when I'm clothing hunting, but would never go further than that. I haven't bought her clothes in over20 years either, as she hated all my choices.
