Teddy Coat - should I get one?

I'm tempted to buy a teddy coat but I'm in my 70s and don't want to look like the proverbial mutton dressed as lamb. I am not fat (but not thin) and try to be fairly up to date clothes-wise but would a teddy coat be a step too far? I'm fed up with my Uniqlo padded coat and jackets and would really like something different and more colourful. What do others think? Has anyone got one?

I think they look nice on very slim , young people with long swishy hair.
They're one of thhose items that look much nicer on the hanger than on.

I nearly bought one a few weeks ago. So nice and warm but I just don't need it. I've got 3 coats, that's plenty

I tried one on last year and saw a polar bear in the mirror. I bought a 'duvet' coat instead.

My neighbour's got one. She's 64, about 5ft 3, and larger than me (she must be size 22/24). She looks like a grizzly bear grin but she's probably nice and warm with it on.

You’re right! With it being all woolly I felt as if I was performing some sort of operation on The Yorkshire Vet. Thanks for that. Got somewhere to put me hanky now!

If in doubt, don't buy. Think of the environment instead.

What are they made of?

That’s what I thought but it’s sewn almost all across. There is a pocket there though. I’ll have another look.

MayBee - are you sure it doesn't just need unstitching? They sometimes tack up pockets on coats when they are new, don't they?

MayBee70 Tue 16-Nov-21 22:49:39

Mine seems to have a pocket but it’s stitched over. Most odd. I miss having a pocket.

If you like them then go for it NotTooOld but personally I don’t really think about someone being too old, if it looks good and you feel comfortable in it, personally I’m not a fan

I’m tempted but as we have so much rain I’d be more drowned rat than teddy.

henetha Fri 12-Nov-21 10:27:26

I tried one on but thought it made me look fatter than I really am. So I didn't buy it.
Anyway, I'm trying to buy less clothes so as to help save the planet. smile

I treated myself to a waterproof, anorak type coat from Fatface. It was reduced to £96 but as I had won £100 on P Bonds I decided to treat myself. I am so pleased I did because I love it smile

Thanks for the update. I’m going away for a couple of weeks next week and it’s reminded me to take my teddy coat.Bout time I got some use out of it!

NotTooOld Wed 10-Nov-21 17:40:57

Just come back to tell you that the teddy coat I ordered from Fatface turned up today. It was well packed and well made and does not make me look too fat BUT it is very heavy compared with my thin padded coat from Uniqlo and the mid-blue colour is entirely unflattering. So, regrettably it is going back.

NotTooOld Fri 05-Nov-21 17:17:07

Ooh, lots of conflicting advice! Well, I've ordered the blue one from Fatface. It can be returned if I don't like it. I'll come back and let you know how I get on. Thanks for your comments.

The teddy coats I've seen in M&S are something I've seen in Primark! I think they would look good on young teenagers and wouldn't spend money on one from either shop.

Now I’d like one with a hood. I walked the dog one day when it was cold and forgot to put a hat on. It was ages before I remembered that my fleece had a hat attached to it!

MiniMoon Fri 05-Nov-21 14:39:08

I have a red one with a hood. It's a recent purchase, and whenever I've worn it I've had compliments.
I'm 5' 3" and a size 14 if that's any help.

I’ve got wardrobes full of clothes that I don’t wear. I won’t charity shop them because my weight fluctuates a lot. Also, I know people say if you don’t wear something in a year get rid but I often dig something out of the back of the wardrobe and start wearing it. I’ve had to start wearing trousers again as my latest dog keeps pawing me for attention and I need to protect my legs. I often find things I don’t remember buying. Annoyingly I did charity shop several pairs of jeans and now see that flares are back in fashion.

I bought one pre pandemic as I wanted something comfortable to wear when I went to the cinema. Of course I’ve never worn it because we stopped going to the cinema due to covid. Given that they’ve been around for a few years so are not high fashion I think they are suitable for all ages now. My main gripe with mine is that it doesn’t have pockets. How can a coat not have pockets? Where do I put my hanky?

This rung a bell with me too. I’ve got loads of clothes that I haven’t worn over the course of the pandemic.

Witzend Fri 05-Nov-21 10:25:49

They look very cosy, and if I was still a size 10 I might be tempted. Alas I am not.

Lilydrop Fri 05-Nov-21 10:22:03

Ive got 2 one pink and one blue they are so warm like being wrapped up in a Duvet. Get one you wont regret it.
