Out of fashion or sensible?

....you’ve guessed , I suffer from a noise phobia ...i think it’s the biggest pollutant of modern times.

Just what we need...less consumerism AND less moving around the world. These viruses don’t spread around the world on there own , do they! It’s been proved that most ‘business’ can be done on line...no need for people Jerri g off all the time. It’s been so peaceful without incessant noise from aircraft and road traffic!

I’m not particularly bothered about fashion either, and buy really only if I find something that I really like (and need).

I have less clothing now, simply because finding something I like, in a colour and style that suits me, and is actually in stock is getting much more difficult.

I actually think that there no longer is such a thing as "fashion"
Up until the 80s, if something was termed as fashionable, be it style or colour - that was all that was available to buy!
But now, each store seems to have their own ideas! I mean this year was all supposed to be pastels, with the colour blue being the one to wear. But online - can you see anything that is pastel ? Most are selling yellow - that was supposed;y for last year and as for finding anything in blue, forget it!
Many companies like Asda and Debenhams have actually cancelled their orders with the manufacturers - maybe they will now change to stocking what actually sells at the moment (I believe Joules have a turn around of 6 weeks between manufacture and shop floor and cut a lot of costs) instead of buying anything up to a year in advance and overstocking or trying to sell items that only a minority want to buy and wear!

I recently saw an advert for a white linen shirt, it was described as "the ideal thing to wear during lockdown" it cost £79! I suspect most people are like me, wearing all their old comfy clothes, I certain wouldn't pay £79 for something just to wear in the house.

I wear clothes for years too. I wojldnt notice if its this year, last year or 5 years ago. What mattersnjs whether I like it, and it fits in with my wardrobe and "style"

I have too many swimming costumes. Hope I will be able to fit into them and have somewhere to nice to swim when this is all over!

Being tall and large I can only buy clothes when I visit England or previously when on holiday in America. Likewise shoes, boots and sandals. Last year like Annesixty I decided I have more than enough clothes to last me now so won't be buying anymore. As I have to wear a full length back brace over my clothes no one would notice if I am wearing something fashionable or not.

There is enough ‘timeless’ stuff in those stores for it to be fine and come 2021 we will hardly have had a ‘last year’ anyway!!

I usually buy from charity shops anyway and have got some lovely clothes, Even my outfit for my son's wedding- that was from a Japanese fashion show so was more expensive than the usual charity shop price. I already have too many clothes - enough to last me the rest of my life but I am always wearing my favourites although those change from time to time. Shorts in this hot weather although I'm 81 - I don't care. Comfort comes first

Does so called "fashion" really matter, especially at this difficult time? Surely at our age (and I'll be 70 soon) as long as you have clothes and accessories that you like, are comfortable and weather appropriate for wherever you live, can mix and match for a range of occasions (dress up, dress down), then being in or out of fashion doesn't really exist anymore. I am a great fan of basic clothes dressed up with some scarves, pashminas and interesting jewellery.

I have a wardrobe full of clothes I am not wearing so will not be buying any new ones!

Just before lockdown my Dad had bought himself a new pair of dress trousers to go with his dinner jacket for two cruises this year.
Now the cruises have been cancelled and at 89 he says he'll probably never wear them ☹️

I only go clothes shopping when I actually need something, I will replace some t-shirts & tops also some new cropped trousers/knee length shorts when I see something I like.

I still like M&S but not Next (too expensive), I'm also fond of Cotton Traders & George at ASDA

Separates can be used in many wild and wonderful ways to make them look fresh and up to date. I am a for people having their own style anyway rather than one a shop designates. Oh well we'll done the mentioned shops for recycling this year's clothes next year. What the hell do people expect them to do with them anyway?

disgruntled I agree as well. I'm hoping that this crisis will see a change in excessive consumerism.

I see there is much comment about M&S. Well at least you have one not far from you.

I live near a West country sea-side town where, in their wisdom, M&S closed down their well used store in favour of one a little further south. The 'footfall' in this store was greater than that of their large City store some 20+ miles north. So, all the older population of the town suddenly had nowhere to shop for clothes and food and to meet up with their friends.
Travelling to the City store is difficult for the majority and out of the question for the rest.
Ditto the one to the south.
Have not figured out why this was allowed to happen in a town where a third of the population is over 65yrs. Crazy.
Hope they are regretting the decision.

The stores will have their autumn ranges all ready to go. There won't be enough time to sell all the summer stock hence the holding back. Even on line suppliers will have masses of stock as people just haven't been buying clothing. It's children who will need clothing as tge grow so quickly and of course footwear. For myself I won't be buying anything new as I won't be anywhere to need it.

and Bridie54,, I have frequently asked at various retailers shops..
who decides what we shall wear,,, the buyers, or the manufacturers.. ie.. Chinese, Korean etc.??? can`t get much without a HOOD,, ie. dressing gowns and casual jackets.
and the quality of the material!!

the winter jumpers are so thin, no point, might just as well carry on wearing summer clothes

I think M&S will miss us oldies...

The words 'fashion' and 'M&S' don't really go together, I think. I always used to think that their clothes were for "old" people and even though I'm quite old now, I still feel the same! For anything a bit cheap and cheery I prefer Zara. But it's a good idea to store clothes that hadn't even hit the shops and bring them out next year. It's not as if anyone's seen them yet.

Am I the only person who thinks "fashion" is a word that never should have been invented. Every year, sometimes more than annually, we have 'experts' who predict fashion trends and colours but it's just to get us to pay them to keep doing it. Really, all it does is get us to spend more money than we need on stuff we don't need. Like many posters here, I wear some clothes out. Most of my clothes are more classic styles that don't date too badly but i do buy occasional 'fashion' items for something special. 'Fashion' also has some people wearing things that just don't suit them, am thinking leggings, skinny jeans. My daughter (37), petite, loves fashion and has a bulging wardrobe but being furloughed is actually using the time to clear out items she hardly wears. But she still won't part with M&S pyjamas age 11-12 that she can still wear.

I've found a pair of M&S linen trousers which seem to be one pair which haven't shrunk during lockdown. They must be 15 years old and have by-passed the trend for tight legged trousers and come back into fashion again.

I agree up to a point, Disgruntled, unfortunately that also means many more job losses in retail and manufacturing.
