Short Hair

I am curious, why is it that when a lot of ladies reach a certain age they cut their hair very short.

My hair is very thick; loads of it, and it grows very fast. The longer it grows, the more wiry it gets and is impossible to do anything with. Left to its own devices, it looks like stuffing sticking out of sofa! By keeping it short and layered, it's the only way I can manage it.

My hair has been short since I was in my late 20s and the length has varied little in that time. So I cannot answer your question.

I have dead straight dark hair and a short sharp edgy cut has always been the style that suits me best. Back in the day, I would have given anything to have beeen able to afford to have had my hair cut by Vidal Sassoon

I let my colour grow out last year. It’s a lovely white/grey. I wear it very short because that’s how I like it - it makes me look and feel years younger than when it’s long.

My hair is very thick and wavy, currently it's collar bone length which I find perfect for me.
I can wear it up or down!
It was shorter and I actually found that more time consuming to look 'tidy'.

What NanaPlenty said. Mine is very short and takes years off me (okay, not that many but it certainly makes me feel better?)! It’s naturally curly and once it starts to grow it develops a life of its own and curly bits ping off in all directionshmm, so we show it the shears!

I absolutely hate going to the hairdresser (or having the hairdresser here) so mine's long. It used to be shoulder length but I got fed up with styling it. Now I mostly tie it back and just go to have it trimmed (not washed, etc.) once a year.

Yes, I've seen that 'disappointed' look when somebody walks by, obviously having admired my long blonde hair from behind - it's hilarious!

I'm lucky that my hair is stiĺl thick and dark with a sheen of silver. I always had dead straight hair - until the menopause, and the it developed a gentle wave. My lovely (Polish) hairdresser cuts it into a layered bob just below jaw line and I wash it and leave it to dry. The first time in my life I've actually been happy with the way it looks!

I`m about to have mine cut short ish..
It`s just easier to manage and I do think long hair on some of the older ladies make them look a little older.

I've had my hair short for the best part of 30 years. I do the same with mine Nanna but have to say when my hairdresser messes it up wax it looks really good, when I do it, it just looks a mess.

There is a hangover from the past when it was not respectable for women over a certain age to wear long hair down.

Some people do it because hair looks thinner when its long and flat and short gives the illusion of thickness.

I hate having short hair its too much work. I say "never again" each time I try it but now and then I forget what a pain it was and try it for a "change"

Short hair always has to be styled. Every morning!

On long hair a blow dry will hold for 2 or 3 days so its a quick brush and out the door

I have short, very thick, wavy hair. 80% still brown, 20% grey. I go to my lovely hairdresser about every six weeks and he knows exactly how to cut my hair to keep it looking good. I wash it every 3/4 days and cannot stand any kind of hair product in it.
I used to have long hair when I was young but I think long thin hair on older people is not a good look.

No it doesn't. I have dead straight short hair, no parting. I just run a comb through it and I am done Takes less than a minute.

I have never had short hair, mine is just shoulder length, layered, with a fringe.
I visit the hairdresser every 6 weeks for a trim and blonde streaks.
I always wear it down and when I wash it, I only need to quickly blow dry and this lasts a couple of days.
No trouble at all.

I've only recently discovered that a little texturising spray helps hair keep it's waves when styled. That's after 50 odd years of curling it and finding it dead straight in a few hours!

I have had very short hair for many years and can blow dry and ‘mess up’ with wax in less than five minutes. I like to play with colour - currently blonde with coral highlights, but that can change monthly when I have a trim!! Agree a good cutter is essential to maintain stylish short hair.

I love short hair.

Mines not short through choice - it's very thin, fine and ratty in its natural state so highlights and gunk for me every day.

rubysong Sun 29-Dec-19 19:54:59

Mine is just below jaw length. I kept it long until my mid thirties then had it cut. If it was any shorter I would look very severe. Also I have frontal fibrosing alopecia so my hairdresser is, at the moment, able to cut my fringe to disguise it. I look hideous when it is wet and combed back.

Callistemon Sun 29-Dec-19 20:38:56

Mine is wavy and I want it straight!
Would it work in reverse, Hetty?

NotTooOld Sun 29-Dec-19 22:17:48

Mine is brown and shoulder length with a fringe. Three months ago I allowed the hairdresser to cut a low layer in it and now it is a complete pain so I am growing it back to one length. I have had my hair short many times but find it is less trouble when it is down to my shoulders. My hair is thick so I can't wear it up much or even tied back as it gives me a headache. Callistemon - you can buy straightening cream to put on after you wash your hair and before you dry it. Frizease do one as well as others.

Barmeyoldbat Sun 29-Dec-19 22:35:00

My hair is white and a bit curly. I have always kept it short, even as a teenager as all I have to do is wash it and just give it a quick dry and it looks lovely. If I leave it to grow longer I look like Brian May from Queen with this man of unruly hair growing down and outwards.

Callistemon Sun 29-Dec-19 22:43:16

NotTooOld I found one in last year's advent calendar (M&S which is good
However, if I go out in the damp I still look like Worzel Gummidge!

Every single woman at my keep fit class has short grey hair and most wear glasses too,

I have difficulty telling them apart as I have a sort of face blindness, They all look the same to me,

My hair is wavy and shoulder length, has streaks of grey but doesnt look witchy

Callistemon Sun 29-Dec-19 22:56:48

Mine's dark brown so I can't be in your class!!

grannyrebel7 Sun 29-Dec-19 23:15:54

Mine's shoulder length, thick and curly. I just wash & go! Only ever had short hair twice. Once when I was 12 and once when I was 17. It's just not me. However I appreciate that some people look better with it short.
