Suggestions Please? Need new 'Non-allergic' Hair Colour

Go grey! I did it on a whim 4 years ago, and it is great! no more sitting for hours in the salon, or ruining towels and staining grouting. Plus, the savings! I love my silvery hair, and get lots of compliments on it. Good for the environment too, and I did use to wonder what all those chemicals in dye were doing to me.

DoraMarr how long did it take you to go completely grey?

Although I am 'white' around temples and hairline, the back of me is still quite dark. Would I look like a demented badger for many years...?

I had all the colour bleached out and a grey toner put on, which made my hair less brassy. It was a bit yellow at first, but since that grew out my hair is pure silver. I use a blue shampoo now and then to keep it looking nice. The bleaching took about half an hour, the toner about the same. Now I just have it cut every couple of months. Your hairdresser should be able to tell you if your grey will be even- go to one that specialises in colour, even if it is expensive. If you really hate it you can always have it dyed again.

After several years of constantly colouring my hair, I’ve just bitten the bullet and gone silver grey. Like DoraMarr I had my hair bleached and then a toner applied. I love the results and will never go back to dying it again.
My hairdresser recommended using the fudge purple shampoo and conditioner to stop any yellowing and to keep it looking bright and said that as my natural grey roots come through, I can have the occasional toner to keep it looking silver if there’s still a few darker hairs appearing.
Go for it...you won’t regret it!

I don't think the Daniel Fields lasts that long. I stopped using it, cannot have been that great.

I too have thought of letting my hair go natural, but like you I am partially silver on top but still dark brown at back. I don't like that look for me.

DoraMarr and Sharon I’m with you. Why bother if you can be gorgeous grey.

I have always had a 'sensitive' skin, and found that sometimes it did take a few days before the reaction (to anything) came out - so I always waited awhile with any patch test.
I have never coloured my hair for that reason, and a skilled stylist can make you hair look good, whatever its colour.
It never bothered me, but I do wish I could either colour or 'tattoo' my eyebrows, which have not only gone grey, but horribly thin (and no, I didn't pluck them!) but I react to any colour.

I will perhaps ask my hairdresser (who only cuts but does not actually colour my hair) if I would be safe with bleach. I.e. could I have a similar reaction using bleach as with my use of standard colour?

I 'only' had a 10 cm-ish reaction problem but lookling on-line (I know, I know, there are some scary things out there...) my goodness, some reactions were just horrific and I don't want to suffer like that!

Certainly, using bleach followed by toner seems a great plan and one I did not know about, so if it is safe for me, I'll give it a go.

I have psoriasis. I use a non permanent colour once a month which is gentler than a dye. Not sure if this helps.

Which one is it please annepl? I've been wondering about non-permanents for a couple of months now...

I had a bad reaction to hair colour. I wouldn't dare to try it again and am another in the 'glad to be grey' camp.

L'Oreal Casting creme gloss. Boots do one too but there is less colour choice. I think Clairol do as well. Its labelled as semi permanent. They're not expensive so it's worth buying and doing a skin test to see if it reacts..

My hairdresser told me it was better to stop colouring my hair as I took a reaction to it. I honestly would go grey, wish Id done it years ago. The time and money you save is great.

Candelle I just reread your original post and I must apologise, I hadn't noticed your reference to PPD. The one I use does contain PPD so you can't use it. It's easy to google and find out if a product contains it.
I certainly shall in future and will do a skin test every time which I don't do at the minute. So thank you. I do hope you find a product that suits. It's easy for people to say "go grey". It's not so easy to do. I for one am not ready for that.

Well, my dark roots are well and truly showing now. Apart from totally going grey (and I don't think I want to quite yet as I have so much dark hair on my crown) and even with the kind suggestion regarding bleaching out, which seems drastic, I am stymied!

I can't find a PPD-free colour, permanent or not.

As Bagatelle says, once one has a reaction, it is risky to re-dye. Check out photos on line of reactions - they are horrifying.

I think I have a horrible-hair time coming (if anyone sees a woman looking like a demented badger, that'll be me).

I'll keep having a peep here to see if anyone has been able to add any additional information, fingers crossed someone with colouring expertise may just have a solution....!

I have grown colour out and it was not as bad as I anticipated. I am now growing a fringe out which would be torture if it weren't for clips and headbands.
Take the plunge. Get a good cut and professional advice.

When I was thinking of growing out my colour, I tried a temporary spray on. Mainly when I was going out and couldn't bear the white badger line any more. Not sure if that has PPDs?

Candelle I think my hair may be quite like yours. I have a very pure white streak at the front (like a Mallen streak), lightish grey at the sides but still very dark on top and at the back.

I never colour it - it annoys me at times, but some people comment on how attractive it is ! Maybe they are just being kind, but as others have said it is so much quicker, cheaper and easier just to go "natural".

Polycolor is very gentle, not sure if it contains PPD but leaves the hair in lovely condition, and not expensive around £2-99

I will check out the latest suggestions and at some point in the future, I may even remember...(!) to add what actually happened - in case it is helpful for anyone else seeking help and advice in this very tricky - and dangerous field (bad reactions to hair colour look absolutely dreadful and should be avoided at all costs). Oh, by dreadful, I don't even mean appearance of the hair but swelling of various bits of the body!
