I’ve still got very long hair, usually tied up in a messy bun type thing which looks ok ( I think ? grin ) now apart from not knowing what to do about the grey I’m also not sure if I should chop the lot off!
It’s still in relatively good condition which is probably why I’ve hung onto it.
Interested in your thoughts.
Long hair over 50.
Ok, or time to call it a day?

I've always had long hair my face shape would not suit short hair. I go every six weeks for a root touch up and have a trim every other appointment. My hair is in very good condition owing to my frequent hairdresser visits. It is slightly layered and in the summer I have caramel and gold lowlights. Maintaining the style, colour and health is one thing I would never stint on. One of my few luxuries in retirement. I love being able to put it up especially in the summer and I love that versatility. I may one day let the grey grow through but at the moment I'm happy with the colour.

Btw, I wasn't able to let my hair grow long until after my mum died!
She always said nasty things about my hair. Even my children used to get upset about it. The funny thing is, it was not a conscious decision! I just left my hair alone after she died and one day discovered I had long hair! The long hair I wanted so much as a child!

Mine used to reach far down my back then I had it cut to just below shoulders to start matching the lighter grey and just let it grow again. I can hold my arm out straight holding it. I bundle it into some kind of bun thing. Or a grippy thing but can't drive with that. I just never get round to going to the Hairdresser. I would love it to go white. I'll be 70 soon.

I am 68 tomorrow and I want long hair that I can pull up in a wild bun or the like. I dye my white hair metallic grey and have had it short for over 40 years. It is past my chin now and at the point where I have always given up...not this time...hahaha I want eccentric longish grey hair to sweep up.

I had my long hair cut off when I was about twelve, haven't had it any longer than shoulder length since then and it's quite short now. Long hair is versatile and certainly much easier and way cheaper to keep tidy by getting the ends trimmed a couple of times a year! I have to get mine cut every six weeks. So I'd say think twice about getting your long hair cut!

I wouldn't ever grow mine long again though.

I had long hair until recently, I have very fine hair & usually wore it up but as DM's 90th Birthday was coming up I've had it cut into a shoulder length straight style with a fringe. It is just long enough to put it up or back in a low pony tail, just wash & go, no styling, blissgrinI am 63.

I am naturally mousey brown but had blond highlights for years & then totally blond. During my 40s I told DH that I would let colour grow out & go back to my natural colour, ended up with blond highlighted with grey I'm often asked if I colour my hairconfused, I will probably keep this style for a while.

Yes! Cut it recently and can't wait for it to grow back out!

I started to let my hair grow when I turned 70. I had not had long hair since childhood. Going to the hairdressers for a wash was agony due to neck problems. It was really hard the first year as it looked so messy. As it has got long enough to wear up, I am much happier with it. I would never wear it down as it is a dull grey and quite scraggly. I have a skinny haggard face so I am no oil painting but don’t need to look any worse.

When I first grew it, I bulked it out with Vanessa Gray hair pieces and hair accessories from a company called African Butterfly. I find it so easy now.

At past 70 I've shoulder length (just) hair, with blonde highlights in the grey and white. Had short hair twice, and hated it both times! Longer hair is warmer in winter, bonus, and can go up if summer is hot and sticky! Trick is to get a good cut, even if only 3 to 4 times a year. Highlights are my one luxury, just a few times a year (together with salon shampoo & conditioner)!
and…..
Jacqui1956 “had a stylist come in to advise on what colours, dress etc suited you best. I had longish hair at the time and was told in no uncertain terms that women over 40 shouldn’t have long hair! They wouldn’t get away with that nowadays.”
Too right - how dare the hair police make such judgements.
It’s not about age, it’s about your own individuality, do what YOU want, and whatever you feel most comfortable with, can manage and that you like.!

Thank you everyone for your responses, it’s good to hear so many of us have long hair past age 50.

And as PP said, in many ways it’s easier, just sweep it up in a bun with some pretty hair clips and you’re good to go! grin
The thought of having to spend ages styling a shorter cut is what puts me off tbh.

travelsafar Wed 27-Mar-19 13:51:35

Mine is just onto my shoulders.I never wear it loose though as it doesn't suit but i always have it up in a bun with fringe.Love not having to wash and style everyday, its off my neck in the hot weather and when wearing a collar,- can't stand my hair with a collar. Sometimes i think get it cut, but then i remember the hassle of one side sticking up, it not lying correctly after blow drying and i think noooooo!!! smile

Ailsa43 Wed 27-Mar-19 13:36:31

I had long hair right into my 40's. then got fed up and had it cut short. I have very fine hair but I didn't suit it short at all, so I grew it again, and then a few years later fed up and got it cut in a bob style, hated it again, so I've spent the last 3 or 4 years growing it again, and just getting it trimmed every 3 months.

It gets on my nerves being long tbh and if my face suited short hair I'd have it cut for good, but it just doesn't. Now I'm 60 I've decided my long hair will stay, at least I can put it up on occasions

CarlyD7 Wed 27-Mar-19 13:20:40

I used to have a long bob but after seeing a photo someone took of me, I realised that the length was "dragging down" my face. I now have it in a short, fashionable style and love it. Do whatever feels right for you.

Pippa22 Wed 27-Mar-19 13:13:53

Sitting at the back of the bus a few months ago and looking forward all the women had short grey hair. It was like an old ladies uniform. Mine was the same, I decided then to have blonde highlights and to grow my hair. It is now shoulder length and I am going to keep growing it and have lighter highlights. I am still old but love swishing my blond hair.

Saggi Wed 27-Mar-19 13:05:34

Cut it cut it cut it.... you will never regret it. I hated my long hair as a child, and I hate my granddaughters very long hair .... such a struggle with her on a daily basis to get it tidy for school. I’ve had my hair short since I had autonomy at about 13 years old.... my mum just couldnt be bothered to argue with me anymore. Short hair is so liberating. Oh... but you’ll need a hat for winter!

PurpleWitch Wed 27-Mar-19 12:54:39

I'm 60 and still have long hair although not as long as it used to be. My plait used to reach my hip bone, now it's only bra length. I don't know why it's so short unless illness affects hair growth. I also dye it, assorted shades of red - darker in winter, brighter in summer. I used to have shocking pink hair in my 20s but I'm not sure I can get away with it now.
A disadvantage with short hair is constant trips to the hairdresser to keep it looking good. If you feel good with long hair, keep it.

Mouse Wed 27-Mar-19 12:29:35

My hair was just below shoulder length and the colour was salt and pepper but darker at the back. Two weeks ago on the spur of the moment I had it cut into a short bob with blonde highlights. I’ve had so many compliments I’m glad I did it but that doesn’t mean I won’t grow it again. Short or long, whatever you fancy, I don’t think age has anything to do with it smile

NanaSuzy Wed 27-Mar-19 12:14:31

MamaCaz yes mine was wide the last time I had it longer, which was in my twenties. I'm hoping that being a bit finer now at my age it won't start that again!! Mamas and Papas reference?

grandtanteJE65 Wed 27-Mar-19 12:10:14

I am 67 and have waist long hair, which is thinner now than I like. I wear it up and have done since I left school.

I had my hair cut short for a year when I was seven and hated it, I can't imagine deciding to cut mine again.

We none of us know what old age will bring, so I might have to one day, if I no longer can wash and brush it.

MamaCaz Wed 27-Mar-19 11:57:53

I have thick, uncontrollable hair, and once it reaches a certain length, it starts to grow outwards instead of downwards
I can grow 'wide' hair (not a good look at any age!), but unfortunately not 'long' hair.

For similar reasons to those given by NanaSuzy, I don't suit short hair, so I have to settle for somewhere between long and short.

Hazeld Wed 27-Mar-19 11:44:54

Hi Kandinsky. I just wanted to say, I'm 66 and my hair is nearly waist level and I have no intentions of having it cut off just yet. I love long hair whatever age you are and if you love it why should you even think about it? I had my blonde (dyed) hair coloured red underneath last year and everyone said how nice it looked ( They were probably thinking 'What? At her age?) but I don't care. It's my hair and I'll have it how I want. I'll be going back to blonde for the summer or some kind of greyish to match my grey roots. Rock it if you've got it.

sarahellenwhitney Wed 27-Mar-19 11:30:28

Long hair to the shoulders and beyond for the 70+, together with, as many do and have the cash, a bit lifted here and a bit lifted there, can or will hide the fact that they are no longer 'spring grinchickens'.
A bun will in most cases suit any age and I would go for that should you chose to keep your 'crowning glory.'

annifrance Wed 27-Mar-19 11:15:07

IMHO long hair on 50 plus is usually very inelegant. I have seem very few women of that age range who can wear long hair loose and look good. Shoulder length is just about OK if the hair is thick and well kept. Otherwise sweep it up into some sort of style or cut it shorter.

My very dear friend has recently grown her rather sparse hair to half way down her back. It looks absolutely dreadful, ages her considerably, but looks OK up. I wouldn't dream of saying anything unless she asked what I thought, then I would temper my response.

BRedhead59 Wed 27-Mar-19 11:01:04

Mine is falling out and I'm noticing other ladies with the same problem. Is there more of it about?

starbox Wed 27-Mar-19 10:58:49

I'm 56 and after a lifetime of alternately growing and chopping it - and several years recently of keeping it all tied up neatly - have decided to let it go! Growing out fringe, wearing it loose, it's fairly long how and going for waist length. Did attempt going grey but abandoned it and just touch up roots with about 1/4 of a box of dye (just make it up in a separate container- cheaper & much less mess than doing the lot & avoids build-up of colour!) Feeling positively girlish and far younger than when worn more sensibly!
