Anyone given up the dye & gone for grey?

I switched to semi permanent colours, gradually going to those that washed out quicker and quicker Hooty - it worked okish. Obviously the less permanent ones don't fully cover the grey so it starts blending in more, but if you looked closely you could see root lines at times. But you can get hair chalks and coloured sprays to touch bits up temporarily if you're not happy with certain stages.

Somebody on Gransnet recently suggested looking at a Facebook page called Going Gorgeously Grey. It's very supportive and there's plenty of photos of ordinary women and their grey locks. I visited it and got some ideas for my short hairdo.

Hmm, I have been wondering the exact same thing having just got back from the hairdressers. Very expensive business having foils and base colour, and as I had left it longer than usual due to family issues I had quite a wide grey streak. I love well cut grey hair on others, but I am worried I will end up with the 'vicar's wife' look ( with apologies to any on here), all sensible and grey..........Maybe I should go away for 6 months, grow it out, have it cut and then return, transformed. It is the process which concerns me, but I would be saving myself an awful lot of money at the colourist.

63 and as yet have never ever coloured my hair, I used to be a red head then a sort of salt n pepper and am now grey/whitish at the front but still light salt n pepperish at the back short hair.
I have recently been thinking of a bit of colour but then cant be bothered with the faffing every month or so.

This is the thing for me, so many chemicals being poured over my hair ever 4 weeks, this, with the hassle & expense ( I could no longer afford the regular hairdresser bills, but a decent home colouring kit is bad enough ) I want freedom

You used to be able to buy tinted mouse, not sure if you still can. My friend used to use a Champagne color mouse on her greying hair, it looked ok and washed out etc

My hair is getting very thin so I decided to stop putting chemicals on it. Also the cost was a bit of an issue. Unfortunately mine is not any sort of lovely silver grey but a dull brillo pad
( other brands available) sort of colour. Oh well life is too short to be vain

I'm getting close to making the switch. I'm 57 now and started with my first grey strands while still a teenager. I've gone from colouring dark brown to light brown, with paler highlights. I do think that your complexion changes as you get older, and darker colours can look harsh.

When I was 45 I said I would go grey at 50: at 50 it was 55, etc. My current timeline is 60! I am admiring others with grey, so getting closer... my hairdresser who is also a friend is against it; she says it will age me.

I used to have my hair dyed and highlights with foils. I always said that when I retired I’d stop, mainly because it took an age for the dye to ‘take’ I hated sitting in the hairdressers for two hours + and the dye started to irritate my scalp, plus It cost a fortune. My hairdressers stopped the base colour and took me to grey using just highlighting in three months with no roots showing down the middle. Two years later I’m still shocked by the halo of bright silver hair on my head. I thought I’d be Brillo pad grey. It’s changed the texture of my hair too. Everyone tells me it’s lovely and suits me but I’m not so sure, but I’m not going back. I feel it’s given me a feeling of just being free to be the real me in a ‘what you see is what you get kind of way’.

I used to have my hair dyed with various lowlights and highlights. Like some of you have said, I began to be concerned about the chemicals I was ingesting as part of the process, not to mention the time and the cost. On a whim, I went into a hairdresser and asked for all the colour to be bleached out. I ended up with a very yellow colour- think Iggy Pop- which I toned down with toners and blue
shampoo. This grew out, and I now have a head of silver hair, which looks and feels healthier and thicker. I also look healthier ( and thicker, but that’s another story.) My skin tone has changed over time, and darker hair really didn’t suit me any more. It’s so nice not having to spend ages in the salon reading “Hello”, and I don’t have to calculate the best time to have a colour before holidays, weddings etc.

I think a lot depends on the type of hair you have. My mum had lovely thick hair and went grey early but it always looked great. Unfortunately, I inherited my father's thin,lank hair and on me it doesn't look good. However, I can only have lowlights now as I became severely allergic to any dye touching my scalp.

I have very little grey but my hair is very fine so I have always had highlights as my hair is just mousey. I find having a colour give my hair more body. I have started having more highlights.

I gave up the dye at 54 and am very happy with my straight shoulder length "highlighted" hair. Saves me a fortune.

I gave been totally grey for about a year now and love it. I feel lucky because my hair is silver and has a flick at the bottom which is more iron grey. Would not go back to colouring.

My hairdresser who I've been using for 15 yrs. advised me to let my very fine thin hair go grey as it would blend with my scalp and make my hair seem thicker. I've been silver grey for about 5 yrs now. (60)
The transition wasn't that noticeable as I used to dye it medium blonde.
I used to be mousey brown.

I chose to go green many years ago, thanks to my darling grand-daughter, then aged six.

Someone referred to me as a "grey haired old granny" and she was most indignant and suggested we use different colours in our hair.

I've never covered up my grey, which began in my 30's.

Now, depending on my mood and clothing, I can sometimes have green, pink, purple or blue streaks and sometimes all at once. It's easily washed out so the majority of the time my hair is plain silver.

Kandinsky I am a little older than you but in the same position do I take the plunge ?

I'm 64 and have coloured my hair since the age of 13, I've had all sorts of colours over the years but these days have reverted to my natural very dark brown because it suits me and I like it. I could just stop dyeing it but it wouldn't be grey it would be sort of mottled I guess as it's only going grey in places like the temples so doubt it would be a particularly attractive look.

My hair may be dyed but is in fabulous condition and absolutely gleams.

I stopped dyeing m hair almost 5 years ago when I was 62. Best thing I ever did! My hair kept its texture but is much thicker now as there is more of it.
I hated having to plan when was the best time to do my roots before any event and always making sure I had a box of colour in the house in case I had a last minute event to go to.
I contemplated shaving my head to get rid of the old dyed hair and then allowing the new hair to grow but in the end I gust had it cut into short layers that soon grew out.

i've been colouring my hair for many years. when I was in my twenties my then hairdresser discovered that I had a natural grey area from ear to ear at the front [if that makes sense] and from then on I coloured.
I had it done professionally as I had the money to do so but when I retired I went on to use home colouring.
this was around 20 years ago now and I still colour my hair. i'm 71 [coming up for 72] and don't feel "right" unless my hair is coloured.
no going grey for me for a good few years yet - I might go grey when i'm 90 - I might not!

I’m nearly 55 and like H1954 used to dye my hair but stopped because I started to become sensitive to the chemicals. At first I hated it, but now view it as part of me and the natural ageing process. It doesn’t affect anything I want to do or dictate who I am so I guess I’ve learned to embrace it. Go for it I’d say (and it is liberating and cheaper than dyeing every six weeks).

I have coloured/bleached my hair since I was 16, I am now 77, my own colour is now mostly white with still a few dark roots, I had my hair coloured last week, pink, blue, white etc. As I always say, I might be old but I am not boring.

A couple of years ago I decided to cover the white hair (especially at my temples) with a lovely violet.... I still do it and can't tell you how many compliments I get!!! I love it.... I'm 70! ????
