Growing out the greys

My hairdresser is putting highlights into my hair, it seems to blend in the grey as it grows, without having to have my whole hair dyed.

It is working well.

Try ash highlights on the dark bits or even white highlights. A good cut should reduce the tabby effect. I have documented my "journey to grey " last autumn
It went, cut, highlights, ash toner, then white/platinum highlights to lift the remaining dyed hair and within 6 months I was there!!
Now it is white with a grey bit at the back on the crown but I quite like the contrast!

I started growing mine out in the autumn several years ago.
I found a spray that blended in the grey temporarily to my dye colour. Then, when it was cold, I wore a hat to go out in the winter!
By the spring, I could have a shorter haircut, which got rid of nearly all the brown....actually was a lot easier than I thought it would be. and I quite like my new grey too.

I used a semi permanent on the roots and then had a shot fish cut. It took about a year in total but I'm so glad I did it. Mine is still quite dark at the back.

I've just discovered a wonderful product called Magic Touch by L'Oréal. You spray it in and it conceals grey roots, so may well work for you. It shampoos out, so is just temporary when you want to look your best while you are going grey gracefully.

It is certainly sold in Waitrose.

My daughter gets highlights put in at the hairdresser at enormous cost.

I just put a colour on and the greys/whites take the colour differently and I get the same thing as her for a fraction of the cost.

Sometimes getting older has it's benefits !

I grew mine out about 8yrs ago, just got it cut fairly short and kept growing it until the nasty blonde I'd been dyeing it was gone. Never regretted not having to get hi-lights done or putting dye on it for one moment. After dealing with 'roots' most of my adult life it was a great relief to finally be 'done' with all that.

Thank you all for positive stories and suggestions. I used to have highlights as it blended in quite well. When I do a DIY at home I just do the roots, but I'm just finding the whole thing a pain. Alea your hair looks fab.

My hair is still predominantly brown but there are grey 'sprinkles'all over, which I don't mind. The other day in Boots I was looking at the sprays for colouring roots but I actually want a spray to do the opposite. I have a silver streak down each side of my face and would like to pick out and emphasise these. I'm looking for a spray to try this out on a temporary basis and then, if I like it will take the plunge at the h/d's.
The purplish shampoos to lift silver hair won't do what I want so any suggestions?

I have been having my hair dyed for thirty years until the oncology nurse told me not to put chemicals on my hair. My hair is a bit like a patchwork quilt as the grey is surfacing unevenly. I will watch and wait and see how I feel in a month or two.

Had my hair highlighted for years, then like tanith I decided to let it grow naturally. Am fortunate to have gone silver with no salt and pepper and have been told that I dont look my age, so have saved a fortune.

Let mine go naturally years ago, I'm lucky tho I started relatively early it is a lovely grey...

I love the colour of my hair silver White darker at the back I find it so liberating and so does DH as he doesn't have to do it for me lol never would I go back

Mine's been grey for a few years. Silvery/white now and to keep any bits of "yellowing" at bay I use a shampoo called Slika. My hairdresser gave me the first bottle, but now I buy it online. Last time I bought some it was about £13 for a litre. You only use it for every other wash at the most, so it lasts for ages.
I'm not going back to spending ages in the hairdressers and spending a fortune - no way!

I coloured my own hair from the age of about 12 but stopped at 49 when I moved to a flat with a very small rather pristine newly decorated bathroom because I was worried about staining it. Luckily at that point my only grey was either side of my face and the odd random strand, so I avoided the 'skunk stripe'! I'm 51 now and I love my silver wings. I also love not having to faff about with dye (I have very long hair). Just wish it would speed up!!

I got fed up with dyeing my hair several years ago and let it all grow out to its natural grey. Recently I have been adding pink streaks with either a semi permanent dye or a spray. Great fun and very moral boosting. I have received loads of compliments and am very happy with the new look. Only one friend gave a rather disapproving look......green eye came to mind !

I stopped dyeing my hair over a year ago ... was about to do it for going on holiday and ran out of time so didn't bother. I hated the way it went too blonde in the sun anyway!
Now that I'm all natural I find I don't have much grey at all, and what's there doesn't bother me at all.
