Greta Thunberg on the environment and being on the Autism spectrum

I prefer to be guided by Attenborough with his years of practical involvement, study and knowledge of the planet, but is so much more newsworthy to be seen fawning over a genuinely concerned but naturally inexperienced sixteen year old, who I fear will suffer when the caravan inevitably moves on and leaves her behind.

Heard on the radio this morning that, on social media, it is mostly women making bitchy judgemental remarks about Greta Thunberg. Men have been more inclined to ask why women are being like that to such a young girl.

It is an old article Kisathecat but I thought the bit about the volcanic eruption and the burning coal was very interesting. No doubt there has been further research about that since then.

Alexa Joan of Arc is definitely not a happy analogy! Poor Greta, we want her to live and not to suffer and be a martyr.

Her Aspie way of seeing things may give her an "edge" in the climate change discussion but please also consider that it also means that the way we describe her online will affect her more deeply too as she may feel like we are LITERALLY expecting her to be "the spokesperson for her generation" or "joan of arc for our time" etc

You know, food waste has a higher carbon footprint and environmental impact than plastic packaging. And plastic packaginh cuts food waste SIGNIFICANTLY.

So following the latest eco fad isnt going to cut it. Dramatic lifestyle changes are required.

Waiting for corporations and legislators and the aviation industry to make it harder for us to consume at the rate we do is BS.

Anja, sorry but doing a switch to loose rather than packaged food, snd then carrying on as normal, might actually INCREASE your carbon footprint and environmental impact and not reduce it.

People are being lied to. They are being told that they can continue their lifestyles and consumptions by making "eco-switches": just buy loose instead of packaged. Just buy organic rayon instead of polyester, just buy paper straws intead of plastic...

Switching to an "eco" version of what we are used to wont do it. We WILL have to go without things we have become accustomed to. Either now, or later with interest.

Demanding that supermarkets unwrap your exotic fruit that has travelled across the world to you, only for half of it to end up rotting in the bin...

^ that is about as much effort as a lot of people are making at the moment. Its like oweing someone 10k and giving them the coppers from behind the couch as repayment.

I agree that our food waste is appalling and an absolute scandal.

I don't know if this article helps It does seem biased against 5G though. No doubt there are other articles in favour of it. Sounds like something that's going to come anyway.

OMG Gonegirl It sounds completely terrifying!

Vehicles cause the most damage to the environment. There are thousands of non-smokers who have lung cancer caused by the putrid fumes given off from dirty/sooty exhausts. What else can it be ?

Along with those irritating " log-burners " which you can smell burning a mile off. I thought smokeless fuel was a thing of the past-----obviously not when disguised as another " must-have ".

There are more vehicles on our roads than ever there were and the results from their fumes are pretty scary. More and more children suffering from asthma, a terrible illness. Is anyone doing anything about it ? No !

No matter how much preaching goes on about the state of the environment----it'll never change because people won't adhere to the way of life which is expected of them. We'll still see towns and cities choked up with the noxious and dangerous fumes from thousands of vehicles. No doubt those who spout about the climate arrive in a car, so to my mind their speeches etc defeat the whole object of preserving our planet.

It doesn't take a Philadelphia lawyer to work out just a fraction of one of the causes of " climate change ",does it ?

I love wood burning stoves

I ring up the company if I see vehicles chugging away while waiting for passengers (if a coach) or lorries who are taking a break. You see more of it in winter but it certainly has stopped Brakes, Reynolds and many others from leaving their engines idling.

Yes, she needs to be protected by all who appreciate her work, something like Malala Yousafzai has been protected and cherished .
I confess that I do see a strong resemblance between Greta and Joan of Arc, and nobody want Greta to be a martyr!

Notanan is right again! The food industries are using the packaging story as a selling gambit . It is easy for me and others to be seduced by such lies . It's a little easier for me to know what frugality truly is; I well remember wartime rationing and shortages.

Extinction is an urgent emergency that requires a wartime mentality.

Possibly late in the day to be posting this, but for those who were earlier insisting that Greta T was just a child, was being misled and badly parented and was heading for a disappointed future when the media spotlight disappeared, this BBC article makes heartening reading:
