Some pics from my garden today

Oh Granny, I have tried to grow these, you are the lucky one , I have tried to get these going in my garden with nil success .

Just now, from my kitchen window. The strange-looking grating you can see to the right is the anti-GC protection device on pond no1. Pond no2 is much further down the garden and is a wildlife pond, so not so easy to make childproof, and we have had to install fences and trellises across the garden at various points. Luckily it is quite a way from the house.

I love peonies too but they don"t do so well in my garden !

Mine are still tight buds, as are my roses. We went to a walled garden a few weeks ago, north of here, and their peonies were out. Mine were still just stalks with leaves unfurling.

The peony is P. mlokoswitschii (pronounce that if you can!) and my books say if flowers in late spring, whereas the ordinary one P. officinalis flowers in summer. This is its third year and it only had three flowers last year.

Thanks culag, peonies are not my area of expertise at all. I do have a peony tree too, but it's not looking very big even after four years.

Brought some of the garden in last night

I have the ordinary peonies nowhere near opening but the buds on my peony tree, which I planted 3yrs ago, are opening now.

I was tempted yesterday too bags and brought in a couple of heads from one of the rhodies, creamy, with a tinge of pink. Beautiful.

My favourite iris, 'White City'. My rhodo, I can't remember the variety off hand, and just a few chives... But the bees like them!

At least in Northumberland we don't have that problem.... yet!

The crows discovered, and demolished, my half coconuts! They are as crafty as squirrels.

Yes anno, here the rooks (crows?) do the same, lifting the string with a foot to get at the contents, sometimes unhooking in the process and flying off with them. The magpies are obviously less intelligent, leaning precariously from the top of the feeder trying to reach, mainly unsuccessfully.

It was a crow that I saw robbing the coconut. I'm sure there is a nest in the trees beyond the brook.

Back to the subject of kitchen views. Mine is not great, being north facing, although I quite like the variegated acer in the communal area. The best sight is of a helpful neighbour who loves mowing, cutting the grass in front of 7 of the houses in my terrace! That is my least favourite gardening job, being on a steep slope at the back, requiring crampons on my boots and dangling a Flymo!
