Soggy summers good for some

It seems that this year's cold and wet summer has had a bad effect on many butterfly species (hopefully, they will recover next year), but some, such as ringlets and meadow browns have done really, really well. Ever wonderful, ever strange Nature!

I had noticed there were lots of ringlets and meadow browns in our garden this year but fewer peacocks and small tortoiseshells.

We've had loads of bees, despite the weather.

Don't know my butterflies well enough to actually identify many, but we seem to have had quite a few. Perhaps we've been lucky in our little patch.

They'll be trying desperately get indoors soon to hibernate!

We've had a terrible year for butterflies. I've hardly seen any in the garden. The same goes for a lot of other beetles and crawlies we usually find on bug hunts.

Last weekend we and the children built a bug hotel. We're hoping the insects and butterflies will move in before the weather turns and have a nice snug place to spend the winter.
