This man is in favour of woman Bishops. Let's just get on and see how he is, give him a chance before we attack. I like Sentanu but he is not a liberal, against gay marriage and women Bishops. Welby may be the right man for the job.

He appears to be wavering about his attitude to gay marriage.
Baroness Warsi speaks much good sense - it is a pity she was 'less than transparent' about her claim for expenses.

He is in favour of woman bishops but not too sure about gay marriage. Sentamu would have been more traditional, I think.

I doubt if the new Arch will be able to unite opinion on either women or gays: far be it for science and logic to intrude upon religious prejudices. I do believe he will try his best though.

Atheism gives you a great, objective view from the sidelines. Incidentally, has anyone read Sayeeda Warsi on religion. Very good stuff, especially considering she's a Tory!!

I think he has to stop the Little Enders and the Big Enders (liberal v evangelical) from tearing each other to pieces about women bishops, gay marriage, etc.
I love religion, it is such a force for peace in the world - I heard on Sunday on Radio 4 this morning that the various sects who jointly use the Church of the Sepulchre in Jerusalem are at each other's throats again about who pays the water bill. Apparently, the pesky pilgrims keep using the lavatories and washing their hands.

I have to say that I'm not really sure what the Archbish of Canterbury actually does – apart from the obvious bit in frock and silly hat conducting services and, possibly, crowning the next monarch. I know it's always being described as difficult, demanding, etc. but I don't know how or why.

Indeed. But the same applies to the the PM, the DPM, the Lord Chief Justice.....

He can't help where his parents sent him to school but his own children went to comprehensives, he has a fine track record in human rights especially in Nigeria and has tackled the greed of corporate business head on.

For those of us with a religious belief he needs our prayers as his job is a very very difficult one. He will get mine.

I am not passing judgement, I am stating facts.

Before passing judgment I prefer to wait and see what he does. The last Archbishop was a disaster in my opinion - at least this one isn't afriad to say he believes in God!

I think I shall wait and see but yes, he is about the most establishment figure anyone could imagine.

No surprise there then. Sentamu was a much better qualified and more experienced candidate. Call me a cynic but I can't help wondering if ..........do I need to say it.
