Smileless2012 i am all for children having a close relationship with their grandparents. I adored and was very close to my maternal grandmother. My children were very close to both sets of grandparents and as grandparents now we have a close relataionship with our grandchildren
My objection is grandparents themselves having any right of access to ther grand children.
In many cases grand parents are excluded because they are not the cosy loving grandparents of children's stories, but for various reasons their children decide they do not want contact with them, abusive, difficult and manipulative parents grow old to become abusive, difficult and manipulative grandparents. Of course their are loving grandparents who are excluded, but what good does it do a child to be forced to have a relatinship with someone who their parents make quite clear is not somebody they want them to know and who will resent any show of affection by the child to the grandparents.
A grandparents insiting on legal rights of access is a grandparent wielding power over their children after they have become of age and independent and of itself is abusive.
