Puppy chewing her (expensive) bed

My two have trained me in many ways 😂

Our cocker used to chew. The only thing that stopped her was Bitter Apple spray.
Now the only things that aren’t safe are socks and the shale chips from the garden.
She takes them to her bed, then when I say fetch and drop, she’ll do that for a reward.
Not sure who’s training who about that.

I've just ordered a Vet bed fleece. Plastic bed bed from Pets at Home.
Hopefully this will sort the problem.

He will need something to chew though so investigate chews!

My large breed boy was an absolute land shark as a pup. He'd chew anything and everything. I found coffee wood sticks were a game changer. I made sure there was always one in his bed and he always chose that over chewing the bed. They are available in different sizes.

Yes - vet bed unbeatable for price and durability

Vetbed fleece is just about indestructible, can be washed at 90 if necessary and dries in no time at all. I have bits of vetbed all around the house and car and some are over 30 years old. Find it online, or a lot of pet stores have it on rolls and sell by the metre ( it cuts without fraying). Dogs don’t need fancy luxurious beds!

Try a fleece blanket, they don’t tear them up in my experience.

My first whippet chewed through the kitchen door. Then ripped up the cushion floor in the utility room. I have a pine chest of drawers in the bedroom that one of my spaniels chewed the corner off when she was a puppy. There’s always the worry that they will ingest some of their bedding as well.My whippet is now nearly seven and thankfully no longer damages just about everything but I stupidly left a washing basket full of paired off sports socks in the living room the other day and she thought it was a new toy basket. I’ve got a container full of pebbles from the garden that I had to remove when she was a puppy to stop her eating them. The joys of dog ownership. Bit like my kids, though, I’d love to turn the clock back and have her as a puppy again for one day, even though she had me in tears for the first nine months.

Forget expensive beds etc. Old cardboard boxes snd old bedding for now with plenty of puppy chews.

I think our spaniel my have been digging for spiders when he started digging the fitted carpet away from the edges!

DD's boxer/sharpie cross managed to shred old duvets all over the lawn, piles of filling everywhere. He wasn't a puppy by then .

I’d put the expensive bed in a safe place

Lots of puppies are bed shredders, it’s as though they get one loose thread and don’t stop till their bed explodes.
I’d but a hard sided onr and use old towels as a comfort filler. Your pup will reduce chewing by about 18 months

What breed is she ?
Some dogs chew and some don't.
My Rottweiler would wreck the house when I went out .
Nothing was safe .
She destroyed wall hangings ,rugs and cushions as well as her bed .
I think that it was caused by extreme anxiety .

I'd also take her expensive bed away and let her sleep in a cardboard box with an old blanket .
As long as she has plenty of chew toys and love she'll be OK .

I suggest the next dog bed comes from TKMaxx! Lots of bargains to be had there.

Hi Aldom, yes, plenty of chewy toys. Hard ones, soft ones - which last on average 48 hours. If you have any suggestions for a good chewy toy I'm very happy to hear it.

Does the puppy have lots of chew toys? These certainly helped with our puppy.

Daft question perhaps, but wouldn't she chew the camp bed too, or is it made from more robust material?

My spaniel did this when he was a puppy. I gave up and bought him a hard plastic bed which even he couldn't chew. I made it comfortable for him with blankets which he did chew! He was and is perfectly happy with his bed though. I tried those sprays but I think he liked the taste! Now that he's four he has more or less stopped chewing everything thank goodness. He still chews socks though if he can manage to steal one.

Yes, we had one of those hard plastic beds but these new camp beds seem better.

She doesn't know how much it cost, unfortunately.

If she is a chewer, shredder, she might not grow out of it so best to buy a low camp-bed style dog bed and give her old blankets and towels if she continues.

She may grow out of the habit, so you could try taking the expensive bed away for a while and giving her a cardboard box to sleep in on a couple of old rugs.
