My neighbours who I get on well with have decided not to neuter their Tom cat. He is out all hours in all weather's, looks very thin too. Last night he came to my front door in the pouring rain late at night. I fed him on my door step, he woofed the food down. When I tried to stroke him he clawed me. He is also always trying to get into my house for food. If I try to get him out he hisses at me. I have an aged female cat

I was in contact with one of several, local cat homing charities as we sadly had our 20+ year old much loved cat PTS a few months ago. We had decided to wait until we were ready to take on a new kitten and recently took in a kitten from a cat who had already had a previous litter of kittens. Despite the charity pleading with the owners to get in touch various organisations who would assist with the cost of neutering their pet. They didn't bother and consequently the charity had to find homes for her second litter of five kittens as well as mum who has now been spayed.
Some people are just irresponsible and lazy but sadly the situation is now so bad that two or three of the cat rescue organisations have had to close their doors to new rescues as they simply cannot help them all.

We had a male cat who was neutered. He had his own cat flap and was properly fed and cared for. Unfortunately he had a very overactive thyroid so was constantly hungry. He would steal anything edible including my toast and marmalade when I was distracted reading the paper! The vet removed half the thyroid but that wasn't sufficient so the rest had to come out. Meanwhile he let himself into a neighbour's house through their cat flap, demolished part of a birthday cake then went to sleep on one of their beds. I did feel bad about it but there are limits to how much you can train a cat! Fortunately the neighbour was very understanding!

We once had neighbours with a partially paralysed cat which was incontinent. They left him out at night and he came through our cat flap and soiled our sofa. In the end we bought a locking cat flap with a magnetic catch. Our cat wore a magnet on his collar which allowed him access but the neighbour's cat couldn't enter any more.

How cruel your neighbour is - I would suspect she hasn't had him micro chipped either!! If she can't afford to have him neutered, Cats Protection will usually help. Having rescued numerous unwanted kittens/cats over the years because uncaring people don't neuter their animals and, with the help of Cats Protection, have trapped at least 20 feralTom cats visiting my stables and had them neutered, C.P. paying for the operation. I now haven't had any feral cats visiting for many months. Can't imagine the number of unwanted kittens that prevented from being born!

The people who agree with taking someone's pet without their knowledge to be spayed, are all B***dy mad! It's illegal!
I wonder if you'd be so quick to suggest it of a human male who was putting it about or even just making random babies, because after all their are more than plenty of children in the world!!

I’m a retired solicitor. I’m well aware of the legal position but I would certainly do it. I’m not bloody mad - I care about animals and their well-being. This cat is not being treated as a pet.

I think you should first of all talk to your neighbours about this problem

I know at one time the vets had a scheme whereby if you were on a low income or low wage or benefits then you could get low cost neutering it used be about £15 for tomcats (probably more now??) But maybe they could enquire? Or even pdsa or rspca might have such a scheme on?

NannyCL I would hope that a human male who was 'putting it about' would use a condom, but if he were 'making random babies' I would have no objection at all to him being taken to the vet. In fact I can think of a certain ex-PM who I would cheerfully crate up and cart off to have his balls chopped off.

It sounds like he’s a hungry, stressed stray or poorly cared-for cat. You could talk kindly to your neighbors about neutering and care. Meanwhile, keep your doors closed to protect your cat and avoid encouraging him inside.

two year old thread problem more than likely sorted.

They are clearly neglecting him or is there a chance they cannot afford to get him neutered.

Tell the RSPCA or any local cat charity. They might capture and neuter him.
