But the correct use is for food.

Out of interest I just looked up ‘fayre’ in my very big fat Oxford dictionary.

It just says, ‘pseudo-archaic spelling of ‘fair’.’

TBH I would have thought it’d be ditto of ‘fare’ but I’m not arguing with the OED.

Hard to say, it depends entriely on how you understand the first line of the carol. Does it mean

May God let you remain merry, gentlemen and let nothing you dismay?

Every year when we sang it as school there were discussions amongst the staff as to whether there be a coma before or after merry.

God rest ye, merry gentlemen
and
God rest ye merry, gentlemen

are too different things after all.
