I'm sorry, I can't help myself - I just have to point out that the word is 'lightning' not 'lightening'!
I've seen it misspelt all over the place, not just on here, but I can't understand how people can get it wrong - it isn't pronounced 'lighten-ing' 
I've noticed that too. 
Very, very frightning. :P
Lightning does lighten the sky though, doesn't it.

I'll hold my hand up........yet still prefer lightening for sheet lightning - although for the jagged type, lightning (as in strike), works.
