Has Suella Braverman lost her marbles? Has Suella Braverman lost her marbles? Is Reform UK making the UK look ridiculous on the world stage?

The latest brain-spark of former Conservative home secretary (now Reform UK equalities spokesperson) Suella Braverman. In a stroke of unmitigated genius, she has suggested that nations once enslaved, exploited and subjugated by Britain should pay reparations to Britain the enslaver and coloniser, for all the “good” generously imposed upon them. As she put it: “former colonies should pay the British back for the considerable investment, effort and contribution that this country made which laid the foundations for many flourishing democracies today”.

Mia Mottley, the globally admired prime minister of Barbados, took time out of her day to address Braverman’s “asinine” suggestion: “I cannot believe we are being asked to respond to the suggestion that the descendants of the enslaved should pay for the machinery that oppressed them.”

Apologies for duplication in OP title...

Well, that is imbecilic, but I do wonder if Reform are just extremely good at writing really bad satire.

It does rather make the UK look imbecilic on the world stage I agree. A UK MP, serving now in Reform UK, gives this statement on X for the world to see. Then comments sought from country leaders of former countries colonised by the UK by media outlets.

Mia Mottley's response to a request for comment sums SB's statement up nicely I thought.

Yes it summed it up perfectly ✅

Why are they being so ridiculous?
Who are they trying to impress with this?

DamaskRose Thu 16-Jul-26 16:30:54

In answer to the last sentence in the OP - yes they are! What an outrageous thing to say!

Complete, utter loss of any marbles previously held.

Where is her head? Many of the ex-colonies are struggling with the consequences of Empire.

Sudan: The country is in a massive civil war. Millions of people have run from their homes.

Somalia: Somalia faces long-running conflicts with terror groups like Al Shabaab. The nation lacks a stable central government.Y

Yemen: Yemen has been torn apart by civil war and outside military strikes. It is one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

Nigeria: While parts are stable, Nigeria battles armed groups and violence in the northern and central regions.

Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe has a long history of hyperinflation (when money loses value very quickly) and food shortages.

Egypt: Egypt owes a lot of money to foreign banks. It relies heavily on bailout money to stay afloat.

Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka recently suffered a total economic collapse. The country ran out of money to buy basic items like food, gas, and medicine.

Pakistan: Pakistan struggles with high debt and must often ask for emergency help from groups like the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

she really has lost it. 😡

Never mind the complex situation in Palestine, which used to be a British Protectorate, and the UK one of there main movers in granting Israel a State but not Palestinians, with massive consequences:

nor the fact that Balfour in November 2, 1917 committed a chunk of Palestine as a giveaway in order to solve our WW1 problems.

Smileless2012 Thu 16-Jul-26 16:51:20

She's showing the world how ridiculous Reform are. The UK will only look ridiculous if Reform wins the next general election and if they do, heaven help us all.

Luckygirl3 Thu 16-Jul-26 16:57:40

The more stupid pronouncemts from reform the more their feet are riddled with bullets... bring it on.

I've never thought Braverman to be very bright but didn't think she could be this dense.
Mia Mottley's response put her down nicely.

Fallingstar Thu 16-Jul-26 17:15:27

I imagine Trump will applaud her but that is setting he bar particularly low.

My only issue with your post is the assumption that she once possessed marbles Lemonjam.

I’m quite sure that the Tory Party were delighted when she took her baggage elsewhere.
