Sir Ranulph Fiennes

I heard yesterday and upset me to read that Sir Ranulph Fiennes who is classed as the greatest living explorer is being kept in a care home "unlawfully deprived of his liberty", being forced to wear sunglasses and a hat in case someone recognises him. Kept in a care home illegally under a false name. I know he is suffering from Parkinson's disease.

I had the pleasure of attending one of his lectures a few years ago and was able to speak to him, he was such a humble and gracious man and I shall always remember our conversation.

His wife is in charge of his care and she is saying her husband is ex-SAS whose life might be in danger from extremists.

But his family and friends very upset over the circumstances and want to take the matter further, basically blaming his wife.

I just truly hope she is trying to protect her husband but articles are not really suggesting that and that his wife is accountable for the present problem.

Has anyone else read any more on this or further news?

The only person who needs are paramount and whose wellbeing and safety is the priority is Sir Ranulph Fiennes- not the wishes or preferences of the wider friends and family or personal wishes of his wife IF she is making decisions not in his best interests.

Cheshire Police has issued a statement that Ranulph is in an appropriate facility, with appropriate oversight, no care concerns etc and no safeguarding concerns. That was read out to the ex sister in law on BBC programme last night by Victoria Derbyshire.

No one has the right to visit a person in a care facility if it is not in their best interests. Visiting is a privilege, welcomed and encouraged if it enhances the patient's wellbeing but it is not a blanket entitlement. It can be legitimately discouraged if it upsets the patient. Estrangement in families can leave painful memories and triggering such memories can cause distress.

The estranged son seemingly wants PoA to be stripped from Ranulph's wife ( his mother) to be given to those who have "his best interests at heart". He overtly infers his estranged mother does not have Ranulph's well-being and best interests at heart.

However as the police have confirmed Ranulph is in an appropriate facility and there are no concerns about his care, safeguarding or otherwise- it appears his wife is making decisions that support his well being. No concerns about his wife's decision making have been found by any authorities to date, yet of course they can't disclose confidential case detail. So speculation runs rife in the media. There seemingly is no evidence or legal basis to remove PoA from his wife. She currently has legal rights to make certain decisions about her husband's care.

Any authority and any registered care worker who discloses any confidential information about Ranulph's care or even care location lays themselves open to regulatory process and could lose their jobs.

Bearing in mind that the Cheshire police have released a statement saying there are no safe guarding issues, IMO Ranulf and his wife should be left in peace which appears to be what they both want.

I can understand why someone known for his incredible achievements would want any physical and mental deterioration to remain private, even from family and close friends.

Agreed.
A friend of mine who had always been very sociable didn't want to see anyone after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease. He was embarrassed about being seen in such a poorly state

It is quite a tricky balance, particularly as it is coming from family and friends who have chosen to go public, I remember when there was a whole conspiracy theory about Britney being controlled, I thought they were quite bonkers and it turned out to be true.
I have read a lot of the allegations from the friend of Fiennes and to be honest if he is wrong I would have thought he would be in a difficult situation in terms of libel.

His wife apparently has LPOA. If what she is doing is in accordance with what Sir Ranulph wants, what he stated when he was of sound mind, then why does she not make a public statement and reassure everyone?
Her actions so far have done nothing to alleviate the suspicions and anxiety of his friends and family. It is alleged that the Care Inspectorate of Wales declared Sir Ranulph was being unlawfully kept in care homes and unable to consent to his care or treatment.
Is he receiving the correct medical care if he is not registered with a GP, as reported?

I think it is terrible that this family's private business is being discussed throughout the newspapers and folk that know absolutely nothing about the personal circumstances of Sir Ranulph are giving their opinion.
Yes, but there are enough questions from friends, family and officials for his wife to answer and as long as she maintains this secrecy then the questions will continue.

The most important issue is whether this is what he wants, or not. If he doesn’t want to see anybody, that should be respected. If he does, his wife must allow that to happen. Presumably behind the scenes there is more going on with social services safeguarding team than we are aware of.

Could it be that none of this is true?

The sister of his first wife was on NewsNight last night, it is true, she was so concerned about him that she managed to identify the care home he was living in and booked herself in for respite care. She managed to speak to him but soon after he was transferred to another home. It will be on BBC iPlayer if you want to watch it.

(I realise I am also doing so.) She is his wife os 20 years and has POA so can act on his behalf. I suspect he may have dementia as well as Parkinsons and his wife has been moving him to try to protect his privacy. There's more to this than meets the eye.

This.

The rest is over the fence gossip.

Icanhandthemback - I’m not going to say anymore other than it is out there for the public to read. Her ex-husband’s name is also mentioned.

Well not according to my internet search where it consistently says nothing is known. A link would be a good start if it is public information.

For those who don’t read the Daily Mail.

It’s supposedly is Ranulf on his own property.

The DM is reporting today that Sir Ranulph is now back home at his Shropshire farmhouse which is protected by high security gates.
Apparently he is living in a modular building with another one alongside for his carer.

Whatever sort of life is this poor man living?

Fallingstar Tue 29-Sept-26 09:33:39

It’ll be about money. It always is.

Oreo Mon 28-Sept-26 22:38:58

It sure needs investigation.
I wonder if care home staff will now recognise him and leak his whereabouts?

We knew her first husband - read up about it!

There doesn't appear to be any public information about her previous marriage or the father of her child so that is impossible to do. Perhaps you could enlighten us of your knowledge.

"If Ranulph wishes to be left alone and his wife is respecting his wishes that is all fine and dandy." I agree. Plus if he previously indicated this as this wish prior to losing any mental capacity- fine and dandy The background is a history of some estranged relationships in the family .

If the current care home is in the UK- staff and management must have read media stories. Would also be aware of Power of Attorney detail. If Ranulph drafted any Advanced Care Planning documentation with capacity such documents may also set out his listing preferences and requests when needing care in the future. It of course would be confidential to him, his PoA and care staff.

The care home would have statutory responsibility for safeguarding Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Would also have access to Local Authority Safeguarding services if they had any concerns no doubt. They must be seen to be acting in Ranulph's best interests in any potential legal process- step son seeking crowd funding for such legal challenge I understand....

Bizarre and concerning on the face of what's being reported I agree. However who knows what safeguarding considerations are being discussed/or ACP might already in place behind the scenes....wont be disclosed for obvious reasons.

Fallingstar Mon 28-Sept-26 18:15:23

If Ranulph wishes to be left alone and his wife is respecting his wishes that is all fine and dandy. But there are some very bizzare stories circulating which are painting the wife as a rather sinister figure trying to take advantage of her vulnerable husband. She must know this so would advise she either issues a statement with an update of Ranulph’s health and reasons why there is so much secrecy or puts up with being vilified in the press and on social media.
That is annoying for her I imagine if it really is just Ranulph’s wishes that have led to this but for her own sake I think she needs to do this.

The Daily Mail, the Daily Telegraph , the Times and the BBC, too. And no doubt others?

Anton Bowring, a fellow adventurer and friend of Fiennes, wrote to King Charles asking for his help with Fiennes's declining health and isolation under the lasting power of attorney held by his wife Louise Millington-Cotes, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The King was said to be “most concerned” by what Bowring had disclosed in the letter, one of his staff is reported to have said at the time.
The King's equerry contacted Bowring to ask how the King could make contact with Fiennes given the situation, and was provided with a phone number for Millington-Cotes who was angry that her details were passed to the Palace.
Instead of being happy for her husband to have such caring friends, it was reported that she sent angry text messages to Bowring, who took part in the Transglobe Expedition, of which the King was patron between 1979 and 1982
Sir Ranulph Fiennes has not been seen in public for two years
She wrote: “I'm contacting a solicitor and the police if you continue this! That was utterly inappropriate! You haven't listened to anything I've explained to you about Ran's feelings about his condition. You are causing him immense distress! Nobody else is???

JenniRen Mon 28-Sept-26 18:00:22

But where is Sir Ranulph?

If he expressed explicit instructions when he first became ill stating that he did not wish to see friends and family, then why were his family and friends not told that?
Or at least shown the evidence now?

JenniRen Mon 28-Sept-26 17:56:19

And here it is Chestnut!

Just came across this story about the disappearance of Sir Ranulph Fiennes and I challenge any of the DM haters to read this to the end and not find it fascinating. It's just the kind of story the DM does so well.

It all sounds very odd, doesn’t it?
Why is his wife behaving like that? And why isn’t the Office of Public Guardian taking notice of the nursing home’s worries?
BTW, the Daily Telegraph broke the investigation results last weekend.

This was reported in the Daily Mail on 19th Sep and I posted a link in the DM thread, but one poster called it a 'muck raking feature' and others said they wouldn't wipe their shoes with the DM.

Peaseblossom Mon 28-Sept-26 17:20:06

His wife sounds like a nasty control freak and her son has fallen out with her and said that she's always been very controlling. It sounds like she deliberately alienated all his friends once they got married.
