Quite shocked to hear this today.

Always liked Anne. She spoke her mind and was a good sport.

RIP Anne.

I was saddened and shocked to hear of her death this morning but it has niggled with me all day now I am even more shocked that it appears she was murdered. Poor, poor lady. Jeremy Vine said this morning she loved her home on the edge of Dartmoor. I just can’t believe it!

Just seen this update.
Absolutely awful.

Poor woman it sounds horrific. Where was her police protection

sundowngirl Fri 10-Jul-26 17:48:14

I loved Anne Widdecombe and was deeply saddened to hear of her death but now horrified to hear that she has been murdered.

I greatly admired her no nonsense approach and I pretty much agreed with her political views. RIP Anne you will be missed.

Sundowngirl- I agree with everything you say. She was so refreshing to listen to speaking common sense.

Grammaretto Fri 10-Jul-26 18:04:46

That's truly shocking news!

Some of the posts made before a police investigation into Anne Widdecombe's death was announced were unpleasant.

Perhaps the authors of the more unpleasant comments would ask for them to be removed.

BlueBelle Fri 10-Jul-26 18:40:48

Police believe it is NOT politically motivated
It could have been a burglary gone wrong

Luckygirl3 Fri 10-Jul-26 19:10:29

I am appalled that an old lady has been murdered in her own home. It is utterly shocking!
I still abhor her views and it is OK for people to say that.

ronib Fri 10-Jul-26 19:17:42

It does make me wonder whether a certain politician has the right idea in providing his own security services? The State being over stretched?

Luckygirl3 Fri 10-Jul-26 19:37:25

We do not know if it was politically motivated .... the police have not said so.
No-one knows just now.
Let's hope there will be some clarity soon for her family.

ReturningFromExile Fri 10-Jul-26 19:42:05

She did live in a remote location and rural crime has been a problem for years.

Esmay Fri 10-Jul-26 20:10:53

Shocking news .
I may not have agreed with Ann ,but I respected her .
I shall never forget her appearance on Strictly .
RIP Ann 💐 💐 💐 💐 💐

So saddened by all of this.

Nobody on here will ask for their nasty comments to be removed or apologise.

Whatever happened to “Be Kind” the slogan that the Left loved so much. Totally meaningless.

A 26 year old man has been arrested apparently.

At this time?
Basic common decency?

It is NOT 'OK' to say that, even less so following the news that she was murdered.
I do not recall people criticising Jo Cox for her political views, just overwhelming sympathy for a woman murdered and a family bereaved.

Respect for the dead?
Respect for her family?
Respect for people who genuinely grieve for her?

There will be plenty of time to discuss her impact in politics in the future and express your opinion.
Now is not the time.

Ilovecheese

I can't admire someone who thought women prisoners should give birth in handcuffs.

Oh I never heard that one!

I am shocked & saddened to learn that Annie has met with a grisly end.
This morning when I posted I thought it was a natural death.
It flashed up murdered on my phone at teatime & I couldn’t get a signal to see if I had read it correctly.
When did it come to light that it was now a murder case?
Poor, poor lady. She didn’t deserve an ending of her life like that regardless of her views 😞

nanna8 Sat 11-Jul-26 01:35:37

That is totally awful. It makes me feel sick.

Elrel Sat 11-Jul-26 02:08:48

Compassion for any human being suffering such a violent end to their life.

RosesandLilac Sat 11-Jul-26 04:02:01

Ann was head girl when I went to senior school. I met her a couple of years ago and we reminisced about Bath convent. She was thoughtful, funny and very friendly.
To have such a dreadful death is very upsetting to me, no one deserves to die like that and the disgusting comments on here and MN are disrespectful and cruel.
I may not have agreed with everything she said but she was a very kind and caring person.

nanna8 Sat 11-Jul-26 05:24:27

The nasty uncaring comments also make you wonder what sort of people they are with no compassion or decency.
