Quite shocked to hear this today.

Always liked Anne. She spoke her mind and was a good sport.

RIP Anne.

And yes - AW's death was horrible. I very much hope she knew little of what was going on.

It is depressing, I agree. Over the past ten years or so people seem to have got so much less tolerant of those they don't agree with. I was shocked at some of the things people said during the Brexit campaign, and there was no return to normal afterwards.

It's not the disagreement that's the problem - people have always disagreed. It's the jeering, and mocking that's horrible. It dehumanises people simply for having a different opinion. It worries me that we might have gone past a point of no return.

I agree Betony. It is just so awful. I am still in shock to be honest. I am reminded of lovely MP David Amess too.
It really is depressing.

I realise this is now an old forum, but Ann's death seems to have been discarded as a subject. I am so upset at tonight's (21/7) news about her being hit on the head with a hammer 21 times. And as for that horrible person at a Scottish university saying they 'hoped she had an agonising death', - well, it makes me feel like giving up the ghost myself. Are we now a society where some people think it's perfectly all right to kill someone whose politics they disagree with? (I know motive has not been proved for Ann's murder, but have a think). It reminds me so much of what happened to Jo Cox. Why can't people be left alone with their beliefs, regardless of whether we loathe or love them? RIP Ann. RIP Jo. I fear for us all in these worryingly divided times.

I have just scrolled X the majority of the posts for Ann were similar,

she was principled, do not agree with all of her view, a very loyal friend, good sense of humour

These were from all sides of the political spectrum.

The really evil ones, some from political activists and broadcasters, well I wonder if they will get a knock on their doors from the boys in blue…

No chance - they are left not right!

This…

I didn’t agree with her views but I’ve listened to her defend them and that is what having views are. She hasn’t actively gone out to hurt people, she just said how she felt.

She didn’t deserve this

Indeed.
Thank goodness he had a watertight alibi. It must have been scary getting f that knock on his door.

A dreadful woman.

A particularly nasty and offensive post which I hope gets removed.

The 26 year-old has been released and they’ve said he has nothing to do with it
Feel very sorry for him being dragged in for something like this…

So do I Shinamae

Pregnant women not shackled during childbirth but during pre-natal visits to hospitals, following escapes of up to 20 women.

nanna8 Sat 11-Jul-26 05:24:27

The nasty uncaring comments also make you wonder what sort of people they are with no compassion or decency.

RosesandLilac Sat 11-Jul-26 04:02:01

Ann was head girl when I went to senior school. I met her a couple of years ago and we reminisced about Bath convent. She was thoughtful, funny and very friendly.
To have such a dreadful death is very upsetting to me, no one deserves to die like that and the disgusting comments on here and MN are disrespectful and cruel.
I may not have agreed with everything she said but she was a very kind and caring person.

Elrel Sat 11-Jul-26 02:08:48

Compassion for any human being suffering such a violent end to their life.

nanna8 Sat 11-Jul-26 01:35:37

That is totally awful. It makes me feel sick.

A 26 year old man has been arrested apparently.

I am shocked & saddened to learn that Annie has met with a grisly end.
This morning when I posted I thought it was a natural death.
It flashed up murdered on my phone at teatime & I couldn’t get a signal to see if I had read it correctly.
When did it come to light that it was now a murder case?
Poor, poor lady. She didn’t deserve an ending of her life like that regardless of her views 😞

MT62 Sat 11-Jul-26 01:00:31

Ilovecheese

I can't admire someone who thought women prisoners should give birth in handcuffs.

Oh I never heard that one!

eazybee Fri 10-Jul-26 22:41:15

I am appalled that an old lady has been murdered in her own home. It is utterly shocking!
I still abhor her views and it is OK for people to say that.

At this time?
Basic common decency?

It is NOT 'OK' to say that, even less so following the news that she was murdered.
I do not recall people criticising Jo Cox for her political views, just overwhelming sympathy for a woman murdered and a family bereaved.

Respect for the dead?
Respect for her family?
Respect for people who genuinely grieve for her?

There will be plenty of time to discuss her impact in politics in the future and express your opinion.
Now is not the time.

Some of the posts made before a police investigation into Anne Widdecombe's death was announced were unpleasant.

Perhaps the authors of the more unpleasant comments would ask for them to be removed.

Nobody on here will ask for their nasty comments to be removed or apologise.

Whatever happened to “Be Kind” the slogan that the Left loved so much. Totally meaningless.

Harris27 Fri 10-Jul-26 20:23:40

So saddened by all of this.

Esmay Fri 10-Jul-26 20:10:53

Shocking news .
I may not have agreed with Ann ,but I respected her .
I shall never forget her appearance on Strictly .
RIP Ann 💐 💐 💐 💐 💐

She did live in a remote location and rural crime has been a problem for years.
