Govt announces Ukrainian style scheme to bring thousands more migrants to UK

I believe mainly from Eritrea and Sudan.

Be interesting to see how many migrant supporters on here offer to take them into their homes!

If it’s the same as Ukrainian scheme you will get paid about £380 a month.

Getting ready for the usual excuses - haven’t got a spare room, can’t afford it, I live in a flat, I am too old, my second cousin twice removed lives with me etc etc. 🤣

I've also noticed the hectoring tone, the expectation that posters should justify why they wouldn't personally take into their home a refugee, the "getting ready for the usual excuses" comments.

I thought Gransnet was supposed to be a safe space to share views without being hectored and disparaged if someones view is different to another's.

No-one is obliged to take in a refugee to their home, just as the UK should not be obliged to take in a never ending stream of refugees. This wall board from a UK support centre showed all the countries where the people they helped came from.

I ask again, why are we obliged to take in every refugee from all over the world who wants to come here?

Are you confusing refugees and asylum seekers Chestnut?

Your questions have already been answered - by several posters Chestnut. Much explanatory information also available on line.

Why are we obliged to take in every refugee from around the world who wants to come here? Too many who might wish us harm, or who are criminals, are attempting to board the sinking ship which is the UK.

We have a criminal underworld now which is out of control, with drug dealers and people traffickers. We have schools and hospitals falling down, filthy water because our water companies can't cope, nowhere near enough houses, energy issues, the list goes on. Our infrastructure can't cope, and yet you want more people to put pressure on it?

Don't forget, this will never end. People will keep coming, in 10 years, 20 years, where will we be?

So I ask again, why are we obliged to take in every refugee from around the world who wants to come here?

The UK does not take very refugee in from around the world. All EU counties process applications from asylum seekers/ refugees as it the refugee's legal entitlement and the UK's legal obligation under the 1951 Refugee Convention law.

It is not a question "wanting more people to come" it is more the case its a fact of life that for centuries refugees have been seeking safe sanctuary away from wars, persecution, flood, famine etc in their home countries. With climate change, ever increasing inequalities, global wars etc the situation is unlikely to change soon.

Whatever the law says, we cannot carry on like this. The latest BBC investigation uncovered a people smuggler living in Leicester, running high street vape shops who was a millionaire. How many more like him? We have criminal gangs living right under our noses because we have no idea who is entering the country.

There has been thorough discussion. The inaccuracies have been pointed out. But I will say it again for clarity ... the premise of your question isn't accurate.

The UK isn't obliged to take every refugee who wants to come here, and it doesn't.

The debate is about how many people the UK should protect and under what rules - not whether everyone who asks is automatically admitted. Those are two different questions.

No one is defending people smugglers. If the BBC exposed one, they should be arrested and prosecuted - this is what already happens.

But one criminal gang doesn't prove "we have no idea who's entering the country." That's a conclusion, not evidence. It's perfectly reasonable to argue for stronger border enforcement without assuming every asylum seeker is connected to organised crime or that the system knows nothing about the people who arrive.

Strong arguments don't need exaggeration. If the evidence is persuasive, it should stand on its own without overstating what the law says or what the facts show.

These politicians probably have big homes, plenty of bedrooms.
Since they want all these migrants, & refugees, I think they should accommodate them in their homes.
I am all for charity starts at home.
Our own homeless want sorting out as it’s becoming a disgrace.

Have you seen the “Stand Up to Racism” group have launched a petition against 1,250 asylum seekers being housed near them in Bicester, Oxfordshire?

Refugees Welcome but not in our back yard hey? 🤣

Oh no, no haven’t. Sounds about right.
My old boss at work, church goer, use to say ‘isn’t it everyone’s world’? When anyone mentioned about other cultures.
Now they want to put an HMO near them.
She’s crying to me now about how they are now setting up a petition against it.
I just said, isn’t it everyone’s world? 😂
She’s one of them ‘ just not in my yard’

So many people chose to open the floodgates.

I agree with Sarnia on this subject. Young men coming in from these countries are not usually respectful of our values and attitudes to women, girls and gay people.
People are right to be aware of these differences.
As I recall Angela Merkel once welcomed in an influx of migrants into Germany, however the Hamburg area say some horrendous incidents of young women being harassed and worse, leading to a complete change towards Merkel.
My eldest son has been with his male partner (now husband) for 30 years.
Over the years attitudes to gay people has evolved and we have become a more open and tolerant society.
I can see us having an influx of people arriving here who will not be prepared to integrate at all into a tolerant society.
