He said he’ll keep the triple lock if he wins the next stage.

Not aware that Labour were planning to abolish it confused

I have never trusted Rachel Reeves with her itchy fingers. Hopefully if all Burnham's plans come to fruition he will find another Chancellor. Quite frankly, anyone would be better than her.

I don't know Sarnia. I read in one of the papers the other day that Ed Miliband was going to put himself forward for Chancellor - don't know if it's true or not. He was awful as a Prime Minister back in the day. He's forging ahead with setting up wind farms but we don't have the infrastructure at the moment to transfer it to GB homes. So let's sell it to France where, if the papers are to be believed we will be paying them to 'buy' our electricity. All in the name of setting a goal the country cannot achieve at the moment.

When was he Prime Minister?

Eh?

Who in their right mind is still voting for Labour?

55% of the population of Makerfield. Are you saying that 55% of all the people who live in that constituency are not in their right mind? Crikey.

“Crikey”A fabulous word don’t hear very much of it these days… 🤗

I agree with LemonJam
I also have a great fear that if Burnham takes over the Labour Party we will go too far to the left and we will end up like what happened when Corbyn took over.
I can understand many feel they cannot trust the Conservative Party when it’s not so much the party it is the awful mess that Boris got us into while I feel Kemi Badenoch is a great positive thinker with a plan in place which Labour don’t seem to have.

not a criticism, food for thought

I don't think that wont happen. Burnham is "soft left" not hard left and is a realist, Corbyn is an idealist.

And my info (our MP) is very much there is are plans and there won't be some massive differences as we are constrained by resources.
I also think there are far more plans in place already but constantly obfuscated by the press.

I am confused by the idea that Badenhoch has any further real plans except cut the welfare budget

Not easy when you hear about unmet social needs in the caring, NHS/mental heath and Education sectors. Has she said what she would slash

How does she plan to ID those who are cheating/taking advantage of our welfare system as opposed to great need?
the country is in a mess left to us,

I think those on the right have no real, solid ideas how to address it. Promises, not policy.

Ed Milliband was never PM. He was leader of the Labour Party and so leader of the opposition.

I must admit that I don't fancy him as Chancellor. I think he should stay where he is, where he is doing pretty well.

I am always curious to know what 'too far to the left' actually means and why it should be something to be feared...

Plevey08 Fri 19-Jun-26 20:52:33

After the continual debacle of the Tories. I can't believe so many think it's a good time for a lengthy, costly and untimely leadership challenge Burnham does not appear to me to be prime minister material. I get it he doesn't have the charisma which many think is needed. We've had charisma in a few before but they weren't effective prime ministers. I'd prefer to give Starmer his full term. There has been so many unforeseen global problems. Being a successful mayor is very different to running a country.

Plevey08 Fri 19-Jun-26 20:57:08

I meant Starmer isn't charismatic neither is Burnham who has a people's appeal for local issues. Think he'd be out of his depth as prime minister.

Galaxy Fri 19-Jun-26 20:57:46

There is in my view very little chance of much move to the left ( and we would all have very different ideas of what that means) , I think unfortunately it will be a similar party with a few tweaks.

Plevey08 Fri 19-Jun-26 21:17:11

I think so too Galaxy.

People are looking in the wrong direction, have been doing for some time, it is in fact the far right we should be worried about.
Left wing politics gave us many decades of a well run NHS - before the rot set in due to governments from both sides of the divide - social housing, free prescriptions and university places, and nationalised industries that resulted in less to pay and better run public transport and water provision etc.
I really don’t think we should subscribe to creating a bogey man when history provides a very different story.
But in any case the left wing has been castrated, not only here but across Europe, so why people think it will be an issue is a mystery to me.

Being in the care home for autistic adults business with 6 homes we do not have one resident that their family pays for. The government pays it.

Plevey08 Fri 19-Jun-26 21:52:16

Thank goodness the government does pay. Where would they be without care and support.

LIllyg2803 Fri 19-Jun-26 22:33:49

Yes, get rid of the triple lock, but peg the pension to the living wage ie £25k Pa. Then just annually increase it by the inflation rate. Most pensioners would be happy to receive the minimum wage rate.

Basgetti Sat 20-Jun-26 03:36:03

Coming back to say I’m a twit 😁

Padstow13 Sat 20-Jun-26 04:02:15

Larry the Downing Street Cat might have to get scribbling yet another 'welcome' speech for yet another new tenant of Number 10........

MartavTaurus Sat 20-Jun-26 05:44:46

Poor old Axel the dog could be in for a hard time with Larry the cat!

Indiebee Sat 20-Jun-26 06:36:01

Yes an excellent idea, you would need to double income tax to pay for it, so our working children will have a lot more tax to pay.

Padstow13 Sat 20-Jun-26 07:26:11

I truly look forward to Mr Burnham getting into Number 10 and prioritising booting smug Rachel Reeves straight to the back benches.

Too far is communism where there is no incentive to work and be productive, where no one wants to invest in the country because there is no reward.

We saw this in Soviet times, an oppressed population and no investment. China is different, you are allowed to profit from enterprise, investment is rewarded as long as you obey the rules, dissent is not allowed.

Soak the rich is a good vote winner but doesnt increase revenue much and reduces investment, the bulk of revenue comes from the wider population.

Out with 2 female friends fir a meal last night ( what a treat!) and the by election was discussed! We all agreed that Burnham needs to serve his constituents before doing anything else! They elected him to be their MP and to re present them in Parliament! That is his immediate job !
Labour have three more years in Gov with a huge majority so why rock the boat now? I know I said a Starmer/Burnham (with maybe Streeting thrown in ) package would be great but not yet !
We need stability but maybe a cabinet reshuffle might come into play
I know I am emailing my MP to ask her not to support a leadership race now!

The government don’t pay.

Taxpayers do.

People like you and me, assuming you’re a taxpayer of course.
