One of the first things I do is browse news online each morning, whilst enjoying a cuppa courtesy of DH.

I don’t have a favoured source currently, so use a range.

My plea is to please have at least one place I can go and read news. both national and international, which is accurate, non-biased and actually “news”!

I don’t care how many people loathe Harry and Meghan, or what the Vardy’s are doing or how much money X, Y & Z have. I don’t care about footballers or their antics or who is seeing who and where!

I’d like to hear/read a wide range of actual news, including politics.

BUT I’d like to read this news with facts, not snidey comments nor political bias.

It used to be The Independent which employed good, true, factual journalists, The Daily Mail, though right biased, used to have some great investigative journalists looking into miscarriages of justice across a wide range of issues, The Guardian and Observer were known as more left leaning and The Times and Telegraph as right wing.

But I don’t find this so true these days, and I know some will reject this but I find so much media “right leaning” these days and am just looking for “balance”.

Anyone consistently reading a publication which is both factual and balanced and covers a wide range of topics and issues or, do you, like me, trawl through many differing sources?

Enjoy your week thanks

And that's the way to do it David. Read a variety, and then make your choice.

Maremia Tue 09-Jun-26 08:21:38

Al Jazeera gives you the 'local' view in any Middle East discussion. And so, you get a better balance.

No, you can read a limited number of articles free per month, and I use Borrowbox from the library otherwise fancythat,

Thanks

I dont think my library is as comprehensive as some with it's facilities.

Just thought, I suppose I could join a bigger one.

It’s not through your library. It’s an App.

Tuliptree Tue 09-Jun-26 08:41:36

petra - both Borrowbox and Pressreader are Apps, that's true but you actuvate them for free using your library membership number.

I have Borrow Box but hadn’t realised I could access newspapers through it, so thanks for the information.

I admit I rarely use se it as the range of books it offers don’t really cover what I want to read.

Just two examples-I don’t know about the rest of the country.

Yes, you can! Gloucestershire Libraries offers unlimited access to digital magazines and newspapers through the BorrowBox app and website via the BorrowBox ePress service. You can check out and read current and past issues of around 90 UK national, regional, and local titles, including The Guardian, The Independent, Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph, and local papers like the Gloucester Citizen.

No, you cannot read newspapers directly on the BorrowBox app with your Lancashire libraries membership. BorrowBox through Lancashire County Council is strictly for eBooks and eAudiobooks. However, you can easily read thousands of national and global newspapers for free using their separate dedicated app, PressReader

MaizieD Tue 09-Jun-26 10:16:00

I'll be specific

Borrowbox, through County Durham libraries, offers the ePress service covering over 200 publications.

I read the Telegraph and The Guardian on line each day, I like to see the different emphasis on the same stories, probably as balanced as it gets although I do think the Telegraph has the best overseas news.

FranP Tue 09-Jun-26 20:26:03

The Mirror - full of gossip and film news. DH loves the sports page, but they put out click bait in FB hidden behind paid wall, and none of this news actually in their paper. Miserable negative reporting. Not one single word about Ukraine or Iran today.

I used to buy The Week and may do the 6 week trial on offer again - balance and world view of real news.

I get a feed from NY Times and MSN Daily to my email, and they do seem a little less campaigning, they actually contain news. I find the US viewpoint of the UK is quite refreshing

I prefer reading to watching or listening and don’t much like reading online. So I read the print i newspaper and find it good. Some excellent journalism, not too much sport, not too much ambulance chasing.

CoolMaximus Tue 09-Jun-26 21:11:43

Guardian, Daily Telegraph, BBC, and Channel 4. I think that between them you get a balanced picture.
All very depressing though.

ruthiek Tue 09-Jun-26 22:51:49

I used to watch itn news at 10 but when Tom Bradbury took over and started giving “his” opinion on the news I found it uncomfortable. Then You have. Robert Peston! I won’t say anymore , I switched off

nanna8 Wed 10-Jun-26 00:13:49

I’m thinking it shouldn’t be depressing because the UK is one of the richest and most privileged countries in the world. The papers like to focus on the negatives, always have. Left, right and in between.

Another successful BBC Investigation Unit programme highlighting the existence of many illegal minimarts and their involvement in crime including prostitution and money laundering.

The government has since announced that new legislation will mean these shops can be closed down for up to a year.

nanna8 Wed 10-Jun-26 09:37:29

Why not permanently? Up to a year is ridiculous.

It’s funny how we all perceive things differently. I find most of the media very left wing.

I think, Nanna, the year is a deterrent. The crooks can't afford to wait that long so give up. Normally they can start re-operating within weeks.

I presume that is because it will break the drugs supply chain. With no income, and rent to pay on a shop, the people running them will leave. The greater challenge is going to be stopping them from reopening elsewhere, because there are so many vacant shops available.

Try Al Jazeera.

I'm not poking or joking. It's often worth reading.

You will probably find out more that’s happening here & in Europe on Al Jazeera than what’s actually being reported here by msm in the uk.

Which lead to what is really needed - a revamp of the High Street to involve mixed commercial and residential units. This trade seems to flourish in run-down areas where you only can afford £5 for a packet of cigarettes against £15, I think.

Casdon Wed 10-Jun-26 11:54:25

Agreed Boz, I think landlords are desperate to let their shops out for the income, so they clutch at any straw even if the business is potentially dodgy.

Casdon Wed 10-Jun-26 11:57:28

Maybe when councils are considering town centre revamps, part of that should be the granting of permission for landlords who own property on the outskirts of the main shopping centre to convert their properties to residential use instead. I know they are reluctant to do that, but realistically we aren’t going to see a return to the high streets of fifty years ago, however innovative they try to be?

It also gives the police plenty of time to complete their investigations.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 10-Jun-26 12:17:44

Al Jazeera and Reuters as recommended by elder son who has to access what he considers the best news outlets for his job. I take the Guardian and read the Daily Mail online. Channel 4 is good and I read the BBC online although I find some of their reporters annoying and biased.

yogitree Wed 10-Jun-26 12:47:33

Byeline Times is my go-to for reality.
